naseous in long triathlons
I have done 2 long triathlons - one 1/2 ironman and one slightly less than 1/2 ironman. During the run of both races I felt a bit naseous during the run. I do not have this problem at all in Olympic or Sprints. Any suggestions?

I also had this problem and in fact ended up puking towards the end of long/short runs in triathlons. What I THINK it was related to was the concentration of the fluids I was drinking and my own physiology.

What do you eat/drink on the bike and run?

I had the exact same issue. I did 4 1/2 IMs between 02 and 03. I got sick on the run every time. I also had this problem on long rides leading up to IM CDA. My trouble was not taking in near enough calories leading my system to shut down. Also, solid food wasn't working too well for me either. I tried engineered nutrition like Hammer Sustained Energy with very bad results.

My solution was Cytomax mixed with Whey Protein (6x1 ratio) and occasional gu shots on the bike. I pushed as much calories as I could on 100-plus rides and then for IM I took in about 2200 calories on the bike (which for me was as much as I could do). On the run I did gatorade with a shot of water to dilute with coke the last 6 miles. For the first time every I kept my sickness at bay. I did have ab cramping of the muscle variety but it was due to horrible heat, not nutrition. Make sure you train with your nutrition...very important. Pre race meals are critical too I think.....I did some Ensure and stayed away from solids on race morning which worked for me.

Also, it may seem crazy, but I know a stud IMr (9:30) that is now racing with junk food! Hohos, ding dongs, etc. He knew 4-5 Kona qualifiers that did the same at CDA. He tried it at the Shasta Century last weekend and had a fantastic race. PS: HE tried Hammer Sustained Energy at CDA and DNF'd while puking his guts out.

I'm starting to think that the simpler the better myself. Try digging into Gordo Bryn's site..he's got some interesting takes on nutrition there.

funny, I've been giving serious thought to switching out clif bars for pop tarts. I haven't yet gone so far as to see how much fat is in a pop-tart. probably too much.
