Here are some shots of my custom Garmin 500 stem mount. Still need to paint it black but wanted to test it out before painting it. put the cumputer in a great position on the roadbike. A friend that works on race cars desined and built it for me after creating a few for his own bikes.

Post you custom garmin mounts

My stem is 110mm and my friend has his on a 140mm stem so I think either way works. you can just make out my friends mount in this picture.

Looks good for computer mounting in general. Do you have spacers and long bolts where it mounts to the stem?

I will be painting it matt black.

Stem bolts were replaced with a longer bolt and there is a aluminum spacer tube over the bolt to space the mount away from the stem cap to get clearence.

Love it. Good work!

What is the weight?

You might be able to sell those if you can figure out a way to standardize the bolt pattern.

Why wouldn't you flip the mount over to get the Garmin more in line with the stem?

Or moun it on the top bolts

it looks awesome. I didn't buy a Garmin 500 because of the integration. Now that I see this, I think I will sell my SRM PC7 and swap for garmin...

Looks awesome!! I did something "similar" as to mount my 500 in front of the stem. My father being handy and carpenter-esc used a light weight wooden dowel and zip tie under the stem. It worked, but this looks MUCH better. Kudos!

Maybe bolt diameter, but every different stem has them in different spots. Some stems only have 2 bolts. Some have 4 bolts all spaced out, others have 4 bolts all towards the center.

reply to all:

Stem Bolt patterns are not standard and since this is a custom made mount it was made to fit my bolt pattern, I was luck that it was the same as the friend who made the mount.

The computer sits with the top of the screen about the center of the stem and that works just fine for me.

That mount is cool but the off center coumpter would make me ride in circles. I am anal and noticed that my screen is slightly scewed in the garmin case and it drives me nuts.

once I paint it black it will not be very visable and I will ride it until it fatigues and falls off or the garmin dies.

Nice job. There are many ways to do this, yours included. I love my 500 but wished 1) that it was further forward on my 1130mm stem and 2) that it didn't stick up like a wart on top of the stem.

This has already come up on several other threads (the search button is your friend). However, again, here's my setup:
It's really easy to see the display even out of the saddle, no vibration, and it sits in front of the hands so little aero loss. I used a nail wrapped in a gear cable outer housing, 7 zip ties, a carefully bent 14 gauge spoke and the garmin removable clip/band. It's called a "Clark Mount". Been working reliably for a year. Couldn't go back to having the computer back at the handlebars.

I was inspired by this post to try to make my own mount for the Garmin 500. I bought a 4ft strip of 1.5 ich wide and 1/16 (I think) thick aluminium. Stuck it in a vice, heated it up with a blowtorch, bent the 90 degree into it. Cut with saw (cuts like butter). Drilled holes for stem using faceplate as a guide. Then used dremel tool to make holes for garmin O-rings. Sanded, smoothed corners with a file, and painted with black epoxy spraypaint. I didn't have flat black in my garage. The usual garmin O-rings are too long, so I bought some smaller ones and used a paper clip to get them on. I bought some slightly longer bolts (5mm extra), and about 12 washers to fit the bolts. It worked great, but I still thought I could do better.

So then I kept looking at it and thought about the thickness of the aluminum. It turns out the stuff I was using (I think 1/16th of an inch) was perfect to make a direct mount for the garmin. I went through the same process above, but this time cut a perfect 1 inch hole in the plate using a 1 inch drill bit, then used the dremel tool to make the tabs. I test fitted the garmin and it is super snug mounted directly to plate, no Garmin adapter needed! Total cost was about $10 in materials and 45 min for each plate. The plate weighs 8 grams. The garmin is really snug and I don't think it will rotate without significant force. This is on my race bike, so with normal racing use (5-10 events) a year I think it will be fine. Either option works pretty well though, but I like the minimalist 2nd prototype.

I mounted on my stem upside down to raise the Garmin a little. The washers raise the plate away from the curve of the stem and are easy to adjust to make it as close as possible without contacting. I think it is about as clean as possible now. I'll take some pictures tonight with the Garmin on it. This was a really fun project and thanks for posting all the ideas.

Nicely done. I've been working on the same thing only using carbon fiber...1st version wasn't strong enough because of the 90 deg bend. Going to modify that this week and work on version 2. I like the direct mount though! My thought was to cut the tabs off of my garmin mount and epoxy it directly on so it was low profile and didn't need rubber bands.

Thanks. I think carbon would be pretty challenging especially using the stem bolts given the compression forces. My next plan is to make an aluminum piece for my TT rig that bridges across the aerobars but has the direct mount. Should be even easier than the other projects since there are no bends to make. Planning on using electrical tape to attach mount to aerobars.

You might try to make the aluminum version for the stem mount and 90 degree bit, then bond it to carbon for the garmin mount. You could also cut the tabs for the rubberbands off the garmin adapter and put the adapter directly into your carbon layup so it is countersunk. Good luck!

Unfortunately no. The washers are there to get it away from the stem faceplate. The recessed bolts on my stems make that really hard to machine without cutting away so much aluminum material from the mount that I think it would be pretty weak and might bend/break off too easily. Maybe on the 3rd version I could give it a try to see how strong it might be. I put the washers between the mount and the bolt head too to make sure the load is evenly distributed on the plate. The metal is pretty soft. Makes it easy to work with and machine though.

How does the thickness of the material you are using compare the gap between the faceplate and extension of the stem. Perhaps it could fit in that gap? I have seen other computer mounts that fit in that gap.

Nonetheless, well done.

carbon is actually pretty easy to work with, and I have the material so until it's gone I'm gonna try it. The problem was the fibers don't do well on sharp bends, so I'm rounding that and also supporting it from the sides so it should be much stiffer, with less ply's. love the direct mount idea though...great idea

The bar can be cut shorter, if you only want to see the Garmin and no bar. Bar can also be moved to the middle and something mounted on each side. It's not DIY, but works.

i'm seeking a mount that will place my computer in front of a bottle mounted between the aerobars. idea: modify an x-lab torpedo mount and adhere a garmin mount to it. mockup below. feedback? here's what i like about it:
  • low profile/aero
  • centers the computer between the bars
  • position easily adjusted or removed
  • stable
  • simple/light

what's the best adhesive for affixing the garmin mount? in this case it would be plastic to carbon.

Finally got around to taking some pictures of the Garmin mounted using the direct mount method. I think it worked out pretty well. Feels really snug especially with the paint. I may bend it up a little. If anything it may be too low, but from the front it is pretty clean. Looking forward to trying in the races...

I've seen this thread pop up now and then for last month and I have to ask .... Why? On a tt bike sure, computer placement is an issue but on road bike? The thing mounts very nicely on your stem. Why does anyone want to go to all this trouble to move it forward 2 inches so floats out in a more vulnerable position? How much are people staring at their computers that they need to do this? Is it just because it's fun to tinker?
I am really am curious so I hope this doesn't come off as too snarky.

Three things. Like to tinker. January in the NW kinda sucks for riding, though not so much this year. It always bothered me to spend money on aero this an that (especially the handlebar I got this year) and then to stick a computer like a sore thumb on top of it. It seemed like there had to be a better way to mount the thing. I bet it saves me at least a second per race:) I working on applying what I learned from the project to my TT rig. The Ventus doesn't have many good mounting options.

Looks good, I'm on my 3rd version of a carbon one and still sorting through issues, the most recent is keeping the garmin mount attached, trying to do it without using the rubber bands. I'm going to drill a hole in it tonight and try your direct mount method. I may try 1 more attempt after this then just try the aluminum. totally agree on changing the angle too though, I think angling it a bit will give a better view.

Not sure. Maybe $20-30 just for time mostly. But I'm not planning on starting a side business. The problem is that you have to make it match your stem bolt width and your stem rise angle. Too much trouble to mass produce and my job keeps me happily employed. They aren't hard to make if you have a drill, vice, blowtorch, file, sandpaper, and dremel tool. Materials to make 20 of them costs $10...1/16 by 1.5 inch aluminum strip.

Simple and effective. Great solution! Planning to do the same thing only a bit further to the front to clear my bottle. I'm also going to drill a small hole in each end so I can thread a zip tie around each extension to ensure it never comes flying off.

Re: Garmin 500 custom mount [mahunc] [ In reply to ]
I debated the solution you speak of: a zip tie on each side through a couple of drilled holes. Since I thought this through......
Make sure you drill the top holes only large enough for the thin portion of the zip ties to just barely fit through. On the bottom, make the holes just large enough for the head of the zip tie to squeak through. Then put the zip ties on, tighten them down and once tight, rotate the head of the zip tie up through the bottom hole so it is out of sight and out of the wind.

On my bike (picture above), I actually put black electrical tape on the mating face of the PVC. I used an Exacto knife to cut the excess away. What this does it make the surface that contacts the carbon aero bars rubbery so they get more friction. You can not see this in the picture at all because I cut the excess away very accurately. This makes the friction fit so good that there was no need for the zip tie.

On your installation: Since you are placing it out near the end where your hands are, the bars will be flexing and therefore this friction fit may slip. Where I mounted mine there is very little flex, so the friction fit works perfectly. The electrical tape just gave me that much more confidence it will not slip.

One other thing you may consider is using no zip ties and using handle bar tape instead. This is what I did for a team mate's setup. The picture will explain it all. There is nothing holding this one in place except the same friction fit and the handle bar tape. Just like you, I needed to clear her front bottle and put the mount where it could be seen easily without major strain on the neck.

Good Luck and make sure you post your results. Would love to see a picture of your final solution.

Each end of the spoke runs along the aerobar for about 2cm. One end has the spoke's hook, the other has a bend at the end (halway along the thread), then there are 2 zip ties around each aerobar. With thin ties, it is very secure and invisible above the tape.

The Bar Fly is made to stretch around the diameter of the bar. You will not have to unwrap your bars or remove your shifter. That factor was a must in designing this part... The reason I didn't go with two bolts was simple: it doesn't look as good or purpose built. I really wanted something that would blend in and compliment a bicycle.

granted, it doesn't have the built-in 1/4 turn mount, it give you two pivot points, so you can mount the Edge flush with your bars.

I must admit that I don't know much about working with metal and have no idea how to source aluminum of the appropriate thickness. So, I took my son to home depot and we started looking through any materials that had the correct 1/16th thickness (I brought my calipers with me). I ended up buying a 10' strip of plastic from the windows and doors section for $10.

The end product may not look great, but I can certainly say that it functions well! The Garmin fits snug in there and is not about to swivel back and forth.

thanks for posting your solution!

Nice! I ended up making one for my TT bike, but I made it cross at the top of the aerobar extensions and then used electrical tape to secure it down to each extension. Works like a charm and a little cleaner than the zipp ties. If you make a 2nd one you could try that, just rotate what you did 90 degrees and make sure the cutouts are in the right spot. Well done!

I was inspired by the guy's with the spoke and the nail. I wanted my mount up near the shifters so I could see it without moving my head down, and also because I have poor near vision and need it a little further out when I'm aero. I tried a knob extension from the LBS but it looked bulky and I also didn't want anything to interfere with my hand placement, I tend to move my hands around a bit from a normal grip to rolling my hands down the the sides of the extensions or occasionally clasping my hands together above them. I didn't want to lose any of my available hand placement spots.

I made mine without the nail and without the loop. By not making a loop the spoke extended further back along the bars and so I think it's plenty secure. Being a real man and all, I only had one option for securing the spoke ends to the bars... Duct tape. The spoke ends go back almost the length that I taped. I was going to use 2 tiny zip ties under the tape like the other guy did but I didn't have any so I stuck a couple of tight little rubber bands instead. In retrospect I think it would have been just fine without them. I knocked it around a good bit and it's plenty secure. The mount wiggle just a bit on it's own but once computer is on there it is rock steady. Mine is for a 310xt, but it's the same quick release mount for a 500 I think. If you've read this far, I'll expect a paypal of $9.99 sent for the proprietary info....

Jeff, where did you find this type of aluminum? I've been looking in a bunch of different hardware stores/home depot etc and can't find anything flat strips in 1/16th inch. Everything I've seen is angle iron. Any tips on where to find something like this?

Have you actually tried that setup on the road? I started with something similar before migrating to the method shown below because if your roads are anything like the ones here in NJ, surely that thing's gonna bounce around like crazy due to the weight of the Garmin 500.
Using the method below (which my friends refer to as a "Clark Mount") with a thick spoke (14 gauge, not what you'll find on expensive wheels) if's very stable on the bumpiest of roads.

Here's a little more information on the plastic I purchased from Home Depot.
•731677350005 Porch Screen Base 3 1/2"
•The price was $10.45 for 10'

Although the product is made in the USA, I bought it in Canada. I don't know if there would be differences with what's available in the US. I've attached a picture of the actual piece so you can get an idea of what to look for.

It's road tested and holds steady with a 310. I've never used a 500, but it's bigger than a 310, not sure about the weight difference. Angling it up helped but mainly I think it's the fact that I have more of the spoke secured straight to the bar than I have exposed. There's a good 3-4 inches of spoke extending along the bars under the tape.

I have moved the mount back an inch or so, but the mount still covers about half of the grip.

When normally riding, my hands feel most comfortable when gripping the shifter body (the lever sits between my fingers) and I never seem to hold much of the grip anyway.

Having said that, I haven't ridden the bike since putting on the mount, so I can't yet confirm that this is the best position for me.

I think it may be just close enough that I will wait to see more about it and price before I buy another option.

Having it on the stem is ok for now, but i can see where in front of the handlebars would be pretty amazing.

Woodie,

Have you thought about making the Bar fly in a TT version that would mount via a screw clasp off of one of the extensions and then turn 90 degrees so that the face of the 500 would sit in-between the aerobars?

I currently have the profile design "bar" that tightens itself to the clip wrapped around the extension but after riding for a some time I find that bracket can start to rotate and get loose.

I am very interested in your Bar fly but would really love a TT version for my Speed Concept as I don't have a great way to mount it right now.

I use a Bontrager mount designed for their Node computers. Works great.

I decided to take this idea one step further. Went to my local Trek store, ordered Trek Part #424838 for $20. To my surprise , it came in official looking Bontrager packaging:

This mount is well built and crazy adjustable. Problem is, the Garmin base has rounded edges:

I decided to dremel the rounded edges and rubber band catches off the Garmin base, flip the little set screw around in the Bontrager mount, and then use two washers to take up the gap in the mount so the Garmin base sits perfectly flat. The base has a hole right in the center as well, so the Bontrager set screw fits perfectly inside. Here's a quick mspaint:

After some work with the Dremel, the edges are gone and the Garmin base is flat. This picture also shows the reversed set screw in the Bontrager mount:

Drop some superglue on the set screw, add the two washers. More superglue on the mount where it meets the modified Garmin base, and drop on the base. Notice that the set screw is recessed nicely into the Garmin mount so the Edge 500 can snap on without any issues. Also, the tabs on either side of the base that secure the unit are free to flex and hold the Edge 500 in place as designed by Garmin.

Here's the finished product. The mount is completely adjustable; you can move it as high or as low as you want. There's a bit of a space between the unit and the bar, so I assume it would fit a Edge 800 as well.

Simple, adjustable, and works great. I like that some vendors are stepping up here, but I haven't seen something that beats DIY just yet.

Yes, it is a very high quality mount. I don't have the space on mine to flip the stem because it's mounted behind the hydration system between my aerobars. Might do you're hack for my roadie though. Looks great.

granted, it doesn't have the built-in 1/4 turn mount, it give you two pivot points, so you can mount the Edge flush with your bars.

Also, ran across this, thought it was interesting, if for nothing other than design ideas:

It looks like there is something between your platform and the Garmin mount. I purchased the Bontrager mount and the platform is very small, 1cm x 3cm, and I cannot find a way to put the Garmin on directly. I think I will need something in between the 2.

Perhaps I have a slightly different mount, or the mount has changed? What I bought was the Bontrager Adjustable Computer Mount, Trek Part # 424838.

Thanks!

Somehow I missed this post. This is the exact mount that I bought. I love what you did! Thanks for the detail. You must have purchased a bolt to have one to put the mount around the bar, and another into the Garmin. Do you know what size you used? Does it resist rotational forces well when putting the computer on?

I'm thinking about trying this with a Garmin 800 and aerobars. I think there will be room for everything.

Nope, I didn't use any extra bolts, just the two washers to take up the gap. All the bolts you see in the photos came with the mount.

Ironma'am wrote:

So far. It's solid with the superglue. I try to be gentle and hold the base when twisting the computer on and off, but it seems plenty strong. I've done about 200 miles with this setup and taken the computer on and off a dozen or so times. No problems yet.

Looking at the first picture in your post, with the mount still in the packaging, I see a screw in the hole of the platform. Mine did not come with a screw in that location. I think that is why I am one screw short.

I was picking up some go pro mounts and they showed me the new unseen yet garmin mount they are manufacturing. The first 30 or so were at anodize. When they get back they will be potographed to add to thier catalog then they will be shipped to Europe to be used by the pro teams in upcoming races. You might spot them on the pro bikes in the next couple of weeks. Not sure what the pricing will be as I didn't ask but trust me they will be worth it as the machining was incredible. It will work with all garmin computers with the turn lock and will put the computer directly in front of the stem. Saw a bunch of other very cool prototypes they were working on for gopro too.

Assuming it mounts the Garmin in front of the stem, does it put the computer in line with the plane of the stem, or slightly above?

Thanks to everyone here I was inspired to make my own mount, so here are my first two prototypes. Number one used the whole Garmin mount, while number 2 is the same mount ground down to lose the elastic band tabs. I then used a countersunk screw in the middle, and if you look carefully there's a tiny little allen key bolt also holding the Garmin mount down on number 2 so it doesn't twist when you insert the Garmin unit. The aluminium is from a whiteboard pen holder, spacers are little collars from a hobby shop, bolts and washers from the local hardware store. I'm liking number 2 so I'll round off the edges and paint it when I get a chance. Sits nicely out front and there is no perceivable vibration when riding on the rough roads in Perth (Australia) hills.

...and the with the Garmin mounted:

That's a drag. At least you got it back. The first mount I created stupidly used only industrial epoxy to hold the disc to the aluminum extension. The bond failed, my 500 went skittering out into the middle of the road and was promptly crunched by an oblivious Mini driver. I really should have known better. Sigh.

Forming a sharp 90° bend in flat stock is always going to be a problem sooner or later. For your next iteration, maybe try to form a curve instead?

Thanks Cendres and sorry to hear about your 500!

I didn't form the bend in my mount, it was already there from the manufacture of the aluminium. It's an old whiteboard pen holder (tray on the bottom of whiteboards) so I just drilled a few holes and filed the curves into it. Might have to reinforce it somehow - maybe with another piece as a second angle mount... Lots of thinking to do but what a fun project!

Nice photos BTW.

Thanks rebem. Here's a thought: Rather than doubling up, you might want to try starting from scratch with a piece of flat aluminum stock and creating a gentle bend rather than a sharp crease. You can get a good length of this at any hardware store for just a couple of dollars.

Very cool.

I would make one note.

One of the benefits of the Garmin mount is that there is a tab that engages the into the notch of the bottom of the "wings" on the bottom of the 500. This keeps the 500 from rotating and fixes it into a proper orientation. Your new mount without the Garmin mount does not have this positive lock. I see you have a friction mount at both the top and bottom to engage the wings. But, I would be concerned the the 500 could rotate free or be rattled and rotated and eject. I think your version 2 is better because of it's use of the standard Garmin mount.

One step further, without the Profile mount:

With the zipties tight enough, it doesn't bounce, and it's nicely in my field of view just looking down (no head tilt required). With the Garmin mounted, I run one strip of clear adhesive tape over the computer and under the lower zip ties, ensuring that it's all pressed together, so it ends up being fairly stable. It would probably work without the tape, but I've stripped the slips from the twist-lock mount (see this), which requires something else to prevent it from ejecting.

On your weight of 12.8g, does this include the additional length of the 2 stem bolts? or is this for just the mount?

Excellent work BTW.

I just used the same mount on my P3, run between the aerobars. I would highly recommend not using super glue. Instead, if you keep the bolt as you show (in the 1st diagram), just flip the mount by loosening the allen screw on the side. If you put a small hole in the center of the garmin mount the screw will go right in and mount up as designed. No need for super glue (although a little blue loc-tite is probably a good idea).

Heres a crappy cell phone picture of mine, and the nokon I just added for a cleaner run out of the Zipp bars.

Finally, a decent looking, production quality piece. It lacks the second swivel adjustability of the Bontrager DIY mount, but adds the ability to move the unit closer to the bars. I hear K-Edge makes good stuff too.

Since I need to order a chain catcher for my new 'cross bike anyway, I might pick this up as well. I don't see it on their website yet, but the distributors seem to have it already.

This is a perfect solution for me. I have a 310xt and all these mounts are meant for the edge computers. The 310xt quick mount interface is rotated 45* form the edge tabs. Now I can orient it the correct way.

I finally got around to making a new direct mount version. This time out of ~1/16 thick stainless steel. This is much harder to work with than the aluminum, but is really strong. My aluminum mount started to fail at the 90 degree bend. I avoided that kind of bend with the stainless. It took a few extra washers to clear the stem faceplate, but you get the idea. Garmin is inline with top of stem. Garmin is very secure, but I use one rubberband around garmin and mount to make sure it doesn't accidentally get twisted off.

Has anyone ordered and received this mount yet?

I got the mount and was able to build it in about 30 mins. I put the screw through the hole in the center of the garmin mount and then drilled one more small hole with a bolt and nut to keep it from twisting or moving. The mount is extremely secure and doesn't move at all. Very clean too.

The Barfly mount will be available to most shops around 7/13. However, there are over 100 shops/chains that have it on their watchlist so the shops need to be quick to order.

I really didn't find anything I liked so I decided to make my own out of carbon fiber. I formed the fiber to a cabon fiber Control tech stem cap.
A Garmin mount is flushed into the top of the mount. The mount is very solid. I made my own mount to my liking somewhat matching the bike/frame's lines - here are some pics[/img][/img][/img]

The only threaded option that springs to mind is using a flat head screw. That will require you to modify the mount with a countersink so the flat head will sit flush. The thickness of the screw once "sunk" may also require a spacer/washer underneath to prevent it from bottoming out.

You can drill a small indent into the Garmin computer itself (Garmin 500, not sure about other models) for the small screw head to fit into. I've done it with no problem. just be careful not to drill too deep.

For my tri-bike, I just use one of those old-style Garmin quick-release mounts (the kind that uses zip-ties instead of elastic bands) on top of one of those little knob doo-dads you can attach to your aerobars. Like this

Didn't need to make anything and the little knob attachment only cost a few bucks.

For a road bike, however, I'd probably go with the K-edge if you could get it.

My LBS finally got the K-Edge in stock. It's a really nice piece, and the slider really allows it to fit the Edge 500 nicely. However, it sits way low on the bars, at the bottom edge:

Also, the locking mechanism is tight. Really tight. Tight enough I'm afraid it's going to snap off the bottom of the Edge 500 when I take it off, like others have experienced (http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=3140886). It actually left black marks on the bottom of the unit:

I guess I'm not too concerned about the bottom of the Edge 500 snapping off, because between Garmin and K-Edge, I assume one of them would help me out if the unit did break. However, the really low angle does bug me a bit. For $50, I wish it had the full range of adjustment that we can get with the
DIY Bontrager mount.

Oh well. It's a solid piece though... should work great on my 'cross bike, as it's certainly not falling off anytime soon!

I bought a few k-edge mounts. Was way too tight on my 500 units. I did call garmin to ask them if I could purchase additional cases and they said no, not even for service issues. Also they told me that if you use another mount that it would likely break the mounting tabs on the case. I k-edge is too tight and if you remove it after every ride as I do with mine then you will be purchasing additional computers in the near future. I like the flush plastic mounts from Garmin. They work great and are the sacrificial piece.

Folks might want to try Martyn Harris at http://www.racewaredirect.co.uk/ because he has a version similar to the Barfly but better priced (IMHO) and he can modify things so that you can fit your 500 between bars with tight extensions. The road version is very stiff while the custom TT version is flexible enough that you push up on it a bit to engage the 500 and then when you let go it sits nicely between the bars (though admittedly will vibrate on very rough grounds). No problems and I think I paid about $35 shipped.

Looks great Morten. If there were a way to create a hinge between the stem bolts to make the width adjustable (like a pair of binoculars) that would be great.

Anyway, while waiting for the Tillquist mount to be available, I made this.....

It's made from Delrin and has steel tubing running through the bolt holes for strength. It uses the original Garmin mount attached with smaller o'rings. It's a little bit heavier than the Tillquist, but works great- very sturdy.

Hello everyone. I am the creator of the FlipLoc mount and wanted to address a few questions and comments. Ex-Cyclist has gotten a lot of private messages regarding the FlipLoc mount since his original post and has asked me to introduce myself so people can get a quicker response. The mount is available in two versions. One is for standard 31.8mm handlebars and the other is for 22.2mm aerobars. Both can be purchased on online auction sites and they are also available for a few dollars less directly through our site:

http://www.designcycles.net

The mounts are compatible with the Garmin Edge 500/200. It is currently available in black, but additional colors may be available in the future. We are also working on a version for the Forerunner 310XT. I may be opening pandora's box by offering this, but we are always looking for suggestions to develop the next great thing. If there is something you'd really like to see, drop us a line. We might just make it a reality. Thanks for all the interest and support thus far and stay tuned for more news in the future!

The FlipLoc STD 31.8mm was not designed for the Edge 800. It was a difficult decision, but we ultimately went with a design that keeps the Edge 500/200 low and close to the stem. With that said, I have tested the Edge 800 with mixed success. It usually bumps into the stem bolts when giving it a 1/4 turn. However, I do know of some that are using the Edge 800 without problems. I do not know what stem they are using.

As always, the FlipLoc mounts are reversible which gives you lots of mounting possibilities. The tabs are realigned for compatible with the Edge 800/500/200 and Forerunner 310XT/910XT. All of our mounts very soon will come standard with red aluminum hardware. This model is less than 10g and will be available soon for the same price of $35 with free shipping.

As always, the FlipLoc mounts are reversible which gives you lots of mounting possibilities. The tabs are realigned for compatible with the Edge 800/500/200 and Forerunner 310XT/910XT. Does this mean that the 310XT will mount on the FlipLoc vertically and not on its side? Not sure if this just means that the 310XT will fit. Thanks!

That is correct. The Edge is secured by turning it 45 degrees in one direction and the Forerunner is turned 45 degrees in the other direction. Thus the displays of both can be positioned so they are readable.

Had my race ware TT mount snap during a race last weekend. I had my standard mount snap which was replaced by race ware with a more sturdy design. My opinion is the material fatigues and cracks over time. I am switching them both to something metal. Its just not a durable product.

I have the flip loc aero mount, and it works great. I was wondering if anyone has mounted it up at the end of the aero bars near the shifters. I was thinking about trying to peel back the bar tape and mount it at the end. In the aero position it might be nicer to have it at the end rather than between my elbow and wrists.

I simply mounted it using the two threaded holes on the underside of the PRO Stealth. Stealth EVO has the same mounts.

Nice to see that SRAM is offering one at a much more reasonable price.

I was waiting for someone to bring one to the market at a lower price, but I recently tweaked my homemade mount to the point I think I will keep it a while as it seems to work with my overall setup a non-traditional torpedo mount location. I don't race so being absolutely aero is not as important to me as I wanted the Garmin located where I could see it good.

I thought I would provide links because the pictures are large if I add by URL.

Here is a close up for making an aerobar mount for really cheap. It is the version at the bottom on a piece of flat plastic.

The SRAM does look nice but the computer doesn't sit flush with the stem top. I have a FlipLoc that I am pretty happy with that does. 2 slight niggles with the FlipLoc: 1) It still can slip if pushed accidentally despite torquing it down rather tight. Additional of "traction material" recommended on the bars or mount
2) The fit is very tight intitally. SLS uses a nylon material and it's very tough. Likewise, it doesn't flex like the stock Garmin mount when rotating in.

Overall, still happy with this choice in an every-widening set of choices to mount you Garmin.

Everyone have put together great looking Garmin mounts for both road and Tri-TT bikes,so it got me thinking about trying to create a design for my Trek Speed Concept to mount my new Edge 500 I just purchased. I am trying for as little frontal area as possible for the design as well as keeping it as low as possible above the aerobars. I am also looking at trying to minimize the rotation angle for clipping the computer to the mount, to help keep it low. Below are a couple of pictures of my concept, and yes it would be made from carbon fiber :o). Has anyone created a design like this does anyone know?, it might be easier just to buy it then to make a new design. Glen

It is very stable. No movement side to side. The bracket is form fitted to the cap. You can see 3D models and, later today, some pictures at the website below.

I did a very cheap version of what you are proposing and it does the trick for me. (just search for my name in this thread).

Just putting a 1" hole in the center was enough to keep the mount securely attached. It's very minimalist and easy to do. It might wear out over time, but for $10, I can make dozens of these things.

A carbon version would be cool, but one thing you'll have to account for is the width between extensions. At the moment, you have a design that will only properly fit your own bars:(.

I am hoping that you inserted a metal sleeve into the mounting holes before using that to mount the stem clamp. seems that the plastic would not be trustworthy to keep the bars on tight.

While the parts I produce on my 3D Printer are fairly robust, I don't think I would ever use them in a situation where their catastrophic failure could directly lead to loss of bicycle control...

There is not a metal sleeve into the mounting holes.
But the mount does not hold the stem clamp on his place.
see picture

There is a locknut who hold the stem clamp, en keep the bars on tight.

So even when the plastic mount is damaged totally is does not directly lead to loss of bicycle control

Yes, the plastic mount would be very simple and easy to do, it looks nice. I had a little time this afternoon, so I decided to make a simple mount out of 1/16" thick aluminum sheet metal, I have a lot of this material just for custom purposes. This mount would only work on the center spacing of the Trek Speed Concept aerobars, but could be made to fit others without to much of a problem. I trimmed the lugs off the Garmin mounted and attached the mount to the aluminum sheet (threaded the aluminum) using 3mm stainless steel flat head screws, pretty simply. I made the computer sit as low as it could go and still be twist turned to attach. I frontal profile of the system is very small, very similar to other mounts I have made in the past. I drilled and tapped the aerobars to mount the aluminum sheet to with 3mm button head screws as well. I have used zip ties in the past as this would work just as well, but I thought I would go this way for my mount this time. Here are a couple of pictures of the finished product (computer not centered on the mount in this picture due to the angle of the photo, but is in real life). I will eventually paint the aluminum black to match the rest of the system.

Santa brought me both the aerobar (22.2) and a handlebar (31.8) and they both work great! The handlebar mount puts the computer at the perfect spot to glance down and see it and the areobar mount is easily adjustable to move it to your desired sweet spot and it is really clean. i dig 'em both!

And here is yet another Garmin Mount....
You may have seen my earlier attempts as producing a quality mount. A few were sold, but I was never happy with them.
The carbon fiber in the new Veloflyte Mount is oriented vertically. This allows the rider to flex the mounting points inward to create the narrowest profile possible.
The horizontally flexible mount also adds a level of protection for your expensive Garmin computer. If the computer is bumped, the mount simply flexes away, providing for shock absorption, and abrasion resistance to a certain degree.
The pictures are of an early prototype so it is understandably crude. The finished unit will be aesthetically pleasing and very light weight at approximately 15 grams.

Here's the one I printed up.
Our printer uses ABS, which I didn't feel was as flexible as nylon. So I had to make it with a 2 piece clamp. I use 2 #4 sheet metal screws that thread right into the plastic.

Not a huge fan of white, but it's my design and I love it. I could always paint it, I suppose.

i'm posting this for all the short fellows out there.

being 5'3" i don't have a lot of retail space for tt bar bottle and computer. i took what the guy on page 7 did and made a slight change.

what he did was put the zip ties on then computer then taped it on. probably a good idea. i mounted the bracket on using the o-rings given. that significantly decreased the amount of play i got. perhaps i got more play because i had to connect two zipties together since they were not long enough.

i'm comfortable riding without clear tape but i guess it couldn't hurt to put it on. just in case.

the kurt kinetic computer is now off :-D

My screen on my 500 broke one day while riding. The only thing I can think is from resting my shoulders on the handlebars while descending putting pressure on the screen with my sternum. I had to pay Garmin to repair it, and then I've used several in front of the stem mounts since. Most notably now my Tillquist mount.

    Hello All,

New to this group. I know nothing about the acronymns or lingo used in your profession/hobby, but I like designing and producing machined components. So....I was contacted thru a friend, to fabricate a mount similar to the "Morten T." design, for his Garmin GPS. To adapt it to a 'Propel' bike, I believe manufactured by Giant bike. Just finished prototype #2 today. I should have the design finalized by mid July 2013. This bike has a 33mm distance between centers for the 2 M5 bolts on bottom. It is fabricated from 6061T6 Aluminum and I plan to black and/or clear anodize the production units. Here is the good news...my original prototype weighed in at about 10 grams, and I've incorporated additional weight reduction. After reading the other posts on this thread, upon completion of this project, I plan to pursue a somewhat universal mount for bicycles with a different hole spacing.

I don't have the bicycle to show the actual mount up.

As soon as I figure out how to add pics to this forum I'll post pics!

    Stay tuned,

I am amazed by the ingenuity. This one in particular. I like seeing the torpedo mounts and having tri bike, I am using that so had to rig up something that would suit. A few test rides and a few strips of krazy glue did the trick. I will post some pics but far less of a 'wow' factor than some of the artistry on this thread.

The use of spokes, wire, zip ties, putty, all smart in their own unique way. This is the ultimate Tri geek forum!

Design finalized! Until I get feedback....

GPS interlock is very positive. Widened the entry/exit slot, so you don't have to have the GPS perfecftly at 90 degrees to engage or disengage.

Weight is 9 grams according to the bike shop. Will get an exact weight as soon as I can get down to a pawn shop (they have really accurate scales for buying gold).

It will mount to both the upper and lower holes on the Giant Propel - 'neck' (hope I have the right nomenclature here)

Making a couple units today for black anodize.

Sorry about the poor quality of the pictures, taken from my cell.

    Morten,

Yes, the weight is without the bolts.

How many hours do you think you put in the entire R+D process to produce the mount for your bike.

I believe I am into this one for 35-40 hours. This includes CAD, CAM, setting up tools, setting up the CNC, cycle time for 3 prototypes, deburring, polishing, updating the design, fixturing, reverse engineering the neck, etc, etc.

I can see why you don't want to manufacture yours, you can't recoup your investment on small lot production.

    I wish I could do 3D printing!

I find that the current options from barfly k-edge (etc.) do a great job for road handlebars, but I'm still not happy with most offerings for between the aerobars. Yours looks like the best option I've seen out there.

Just to add to the thread, I've my DIY mount is simple and effective. Just drill some holes in the original mount and zip tie it to the aerobars. I've found it works quite well for the purpose!

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I'm torn between the different out front mounts available. Morten Tillquist's mount is a thing of beauty and is ludicrously light for how solid it looks. It therefore ticks all of my boxes. The only concern I have is the all metal interface to attach the Garmin to. Does this wear away the softer Garmin unit like the original K-Edge is accused of doing? Any users out there with comments either way?

    Many thanks

To add additional comment. I have used mine for well over 3,000 miles including rough terrain and it has not worn away the Garmin surface. Still clicks in very nicely and has never fallen or twisted out. In fact in hold position throughout ride (I never have had to adjust to straighten back into position). Working great.

Cool. I've done that with a regular Garmin plastic mount into which I drilled two small holes. I can then thread a single zip tie through. I actually have a better idea but can't produce it.

No. I think the best way to do this is to buy either the Wahoo RFLKT mount kit for a Garmin mount (pretty sure they sell this separately) or get one of the 910XT or 310XT kits that converts the watch to mount in a quarter-turn mount. Then modify as necessary by cutting and drilling some plastic.

Unless someone has come out with something generic by now, which may have happened but I haven't been looking. I'm away from home for another couple weeks, but I'd also guess that someone may have designed something in CAD that could be 3D printed. You might check Thingiverse.com and search for Garmin stuff and wade through and see if there's something suitable there. If so, you can pay one of the online 3D print companies to print it (much more expensive than the modified option above, but probably better if the right thing exists), or wait a couple weeks for me to get back and I can print it as I have a Makerbot myself now. If nothing exists I might be willing to give it a go to draw something...I've tried once, but my CAD skills weren't quite up to it. I've gotten a little better since then, though, so maybe...

It's also a slightly complex part to print on a printer of the type mine is, too. May need slightly higher resolution than I have, hard to say until I try.

Hi - I just bought a 2014 Giant Propel and am looking for a Garmin mount identical to the one in your post (black anodized). Are you marketing these mounts? I'd love to have one... The bolt spread on my stem is 30mm. Yours look great... beats the above stem mount with rubber bands...

I just got a 520 and have been looking at options to mount BTA with my zip tie bottle cage. I think this will work for me too. I'm going to use a coat hanger as I don't have fat spokes at my disposal.

    Hej Morten,
