Garmin 500/800 NP, IF, TSS firmware update?
Per the release information from the Vector, Garmin is providing on screen NP, IF, and TSS in the 500/800. Anyone see anything on when this firmware update will be made?

http://garmin.blogs.com/...e-with-vector-1.html

Get an ‘Edge’ on the competition: For users already using a Garmin Edge® 800 or Edge 500 cycling computer, adding a Vector power meter will take their training to the next level. Not only will the Edge display total power, left and right leg power, and cadence, it will now also display in real-time the widely adopted power metrics from TrainingPeaks™: Normalized Power (NP ™), Intensity Factor (IF ™) and Training Stress Score (TSS ™). The Edge 800 adds a new interval summary page to enhance the power-based training experience.

Edited to add the page with updates. Nothing yet. http://www8.garmin.com/..._details.jsp?id=4715

i had read the firm was was end of september but that hasn't turned up.

i did get to play with the vectors though, with a garmin edge 800 with the updated firmware (firmware date was 16th of september or something)....

I do want NP, TSS etc, as i do wonder why at the end of intervals im buggered, but then when you see the NP for an hour is around by FTP it makes sense!

Yeah, at InterBike they initially said 500/800/310XT by end of Sept, but then corrected that to note that it was going to be 800 first, then 500, then 310XT - all happening pretty quickly after one another. I suspect we'll see the 800 update in the next week or two, then from there as announced.

There was a bit of 'all hands on deck' related to some of the 910XT stuff in recent weeks, likely diverting some resources temporarily. I suspect that'll continue until 910XT public release.

dcrainmaker, I was just about to ask for your input on update status. so, thanks for the update. looking for the edge 500 update. I was going to buy a new joule to get NP, so this is great news about the garmin devices.

Hope this update comes in the near future, I'd love to have NP, etc, for IMAZ in four weeks.

Wouldn't only NP change how you raced, and really wouldn't make much of a difference unless the course was hilly?

I hope this fixes the bug on the 800 where it displays "_ _ _ _" as your accumulated elevation gain once you pass 10,000 ft climbed in a ride.

You could always switch to metric units. You'd have the benefit of showing more than 3 times the elevation and join the rest of the world in the 21st century. Plus, as an added bonus it always sounds like you're going faster!

From what I understand, instead of displaying "-------", it now displays "Get off your bike already, 10,000' in a single ride is absurd".

Yeah, eventually I will. I hear the US will be switching to metric by 1990.

Anyway, applied the update and at the activity totals report screen shows the elevation gain. Won't know about the live display until next time I head to the mountains.

The Edge 500 and 310XT will be next.

For those looking for a boatload of screenshots, as well as all the data fields added, see this post.

Also note that it's not just TSS/IF/NP added, but also the new lap summary screen - which is pretty cool, very joule-like. And left/right power for those PM's that will support it. And the ability to now store up to 5 bikes in the unit.

No, previous rides are not calculated.

But you should be able to download that information into software like cyclops poweragent to get the data you are looking for.

Ray,
Sorry if this question is mis-directed, but any idea on why I can no longer upload an Ant+ .fit file to PowerAgent now that I have updated to the latest firmware update on the edge 800? I could, and still can, upload activity files in that format prior to the firmware upgrade, but now I get a message that an error ocurred during the upload. Viewing the details of the error message it may be Java related, maybe some incompatibility between PowerAgent and the latest edge800 firmware perhaps?

The f/w update did change the .FIT architecture (updated it), which may have broken some clients. I saw a list of compliant applications/sites on the Garmin Forums yesterday, and the vast majority were fine. Only sites/applications that didn't implement the FIT parser in a way to simply overlook 'unknown data fields' would have a problem. The reason this is of note is that the new .FIT file actually sends over the TSS/NP/IF values at the end of the file, which can cause apps that aren't expecting it to fumble.

Downloaded the new firmware and did my first ride with TSS, NP and all the other new thingamajigs to look at on my Edge 800. Cool. However, when uploaded to the Garmin Connect website it was the same old data fields (just avg and max power). Boo....

I downloaded the latest firmware on my 500 and now I don't have an overall wattage avg - it displays the same info as my 3s avg. Any ideas on this?
I'm also unable to recalibrate either of my powermeters. I actually left it all night two nights ago and it sill didn't work.

FWIW, NP is effing useless while training. I tried to train by shooting for NP numbers and ended up not getting as much from my workouts.

As for TSS, there are times knowing how much i have done is nice so i don't over do things. But i don't go chase TSS if i'm under.

Yeah I agree. I can't think of a reason why NP would be all that useful during the ride. TSS would fall into the category of "nice to know", but it shouldn't dictate what you're doing out there.

I don't really need it here where it's dead-flat, but I could see the usefulness in rolling terrain.

I gave up NP when I moved from a Joule to an Edge 500 and don't miss it much. Would have been nice to have for long course tri, but I didn't feel that handicapped without it.

The main use I had for onboard TSS is for when I was on travel. I drove and brought my bike (2-4 day trips). It was nice to have an idea of TSS without needing to bring a second laptop with me for downloading files.

For all the folks that have more than 3 bikes it's a nice touch. You can keep track of how much you ride each bike and you can input specific wheel diameter for speed for each of your bikes.

YMMV,

I see, I ride on four different bikes but still don't see the benefit since I use a powertap wheel on my road and TT bike, use GPS for speed & distance on my mountain bike and have a speed / cadence sensor on my trainer bike. Even if I just use bike 1 for every ride the device seems to always automatically switch to whatever it needs to to collect and display information.

I would like there to be different data field settings possible though. When I ride the TT bike I want to see different fields than on the MTB... or something for racing with less fields (but bigger size) vs training. But I assume that's not possible? (I have a 500 and a 310XT)

Thanks for posting it.

Anyone know if GarminConnect has been enhanced to work with these new metrics? To me that's where the real payoff would be. Having TSS available in real-time on the bike isn't particularly useful. But having it (and the other new metrics) in the ride summary on GC would make the software much more useful.

Yes, it's been there since last fall for Edge 800 users (and now Edge 500 activity recorded folks).

Smile Seriously? Keep in mind Garmin took ~10-months to publish this update for the Edge 500.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just updated to 3.0 on my garmin 500. I tried to upload to garmin connect and I've been getting an error "Error: ERROR: Unable to parse directory document." I'm on a mac using safari with Lion. I've had no previous issues uploading. Tried firefox and nothing seems to happen.

Just curious if you have any thoughts.

Roughly 5-7 minutes assuming all goes fine.

Hmm, not sure on that one. Have you tried both via Garmin Communicator as well as just manually picking the file via the 'manual file uploader' thing.

Called Garmin Tech support. They said there probably is a corrupt file on the 500. they advised to reset the unit, delete the history, as well as go into my activities file on the computer and erase all the files on the computer.

we'll see what happens!

You're all very welcome for this update, btw. I got tired of waiting for it so that I could buy a 500 (wanted NP, etc on my display), so I finally pulled the trigger on the 800 last weekend. Naturally, this means the 500 firmware update comes out this week. ;-P

Happy to see this update come out! I do have a noob question: I've been using trainerroad for a few weeks and just did another FTP test last week. I'm using a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine trainer and a Powertap SL+ wheel. Can I use the FTP number generated by that test as the FTP off of which the Garmin will calculate my numbers?

Sure thing. If it's off a bit and as you gain fitness you can refine the number but it's always a bit of a guesstimate no matter what.

If you still have the files you can back calculate them with Golden Cheetah. The beta versions of 3.0 all allow you to use both Andy C's metrics as well as Phil S's.

I've downloaded the new software with no problems. How does the garmin 500 know what my FTP is in order to calculate TSS?

You have to enter it into "Power Zones" The default is set up at 200 watts.

The route there is via:
Settings
Bike Settings
Bike 1 (or what ever you've already edited this one to say)
Power Zones = scroll over and edit the 200 watts to your FTP

Hope that helps,

Hugh

That didn't go well for me at all.

I went through garmin connect to updat the firmware. It tried to do an update but wouldn't because the time zone maps (???) wouldn't update.

So I opened webupdater and then loaded the v3 update. After that, when I turn on the device, the screens says GARMIN, but turns off after about 10-15 seconds.

Of course I did this on a Friday night when tech support is closed all weekend. I guess I won't be getting any data this weekend.

Any suggestions? I've tried updating several times through the webupdater but of course I get the same results.

bummer,

Scott

In the comments on my post I posted a workaround to the above problem, in short:

A) Turn off unit.
B) While holding down lower left button (Enter), plug into computer
C) After about 5 seconds, let go of Enter button
D) Within a few seconds, you should see the Garmin now show up as a drive on your computer
E) Delete anything within the Newfiles directory, it's just duplicate junk
F) Eject unit, and try turning on again
G) If that doesn't work, repeat steps A-D, then:
H) Move all Activities (in Activity Directory) temporarily off the unit to somewhere else (your hard drive), repeat for Courses as well.
I) Eject unit, try again
J) Failing all that, I'd have to recommend Garmin Support (tough on a weekend I know). But I think the above will fix it.

Thanks a ton for your help with this and your reviews. When I was looking for an ant+ computer for my powertap I read everything on your little slice of the internet.

Great work and super helpful.

Anybody having any problems/success uploading into Power Agent?

Updated both my Edge 500's yesterday and PA gives an error message when I try to upload from either unit. Had success with Golden Cheetah. I know PA isn't the gold standard, but I do like it for a couple of things.

Everything seems to be working fine with the Garmin, but maybe they didn't test files with PA?

Since I downloaded the new update, I regularly have some rides where the garmin will not pick up my powertap. It will say 'not connected' under sensor status.
Frustrating. Suggestions?

This is a bit of a late bump of a thread, but I think I am running the latest firmware for my 800, but I didn't see NP listed under the power options on what can be displayed, is it someplace else?
