Hydropacs/Camelpacs
The water bottle/drag article was very informational. The last 1/2 Ironman I did I wore a Camelpac, since I'm not fond of reaching for a bottle on the down tubing, and it's more convenient for me to drink from in my aerobars. Looks like the hydropac is not the most efficient, but not the worst either. What is your take (anyone out there) regarding the extra weight on a persons body versus carrying water on the bike frame? Do you think this hinders performance, especially on hills and climbing....?
Your thoughts.....?

Well, I really like the camelback and just used one this past weekend for a 1/2 ironman. It worked out great. I had a single bottle with gatorade and the 2L Rogue camelback. I did run out of fluids at the 80k mark so I think it was perfect for the distance. I will continue to use it for races.

As far as the aero tests I think the real advantage of the camelback is that hydration is convenient. Also the the tests do not comment on the temporary increase in drag from the rider as he/she reaches for and drinks for a bottle. It may be that being able to drink without interupting aero position is a greater overall advantage. I think proper and adequate hydration is more advantageous than the slight drag differences in carrier method.
