"Mixed Multisport" Novelty Events an Opportunity?
There have been a significant proliferation or mixed multisport events going back to the Muddy Buddy and now including these "Warrior Dash" style events and even the Navy SEAL Challenge.

The "strong man" events on TV have gotten decent play and even Japanese game shows like "Ninja Warrior" have developed a following on this side of the pond.

I wonder if there will be a "standardization" of some time of mixed multisport event that includes speed, strength, endurance and balance. Or, are these events better left to be very open and not formatted?

These things are fun and they are growing. I wonder what's next.

Thoughts?

Possibly. The trick is to make them appear hardcore and badass to the average joe while making them easy enough for the average out of shape mid-30s ex fratboy/office worker to finish.

The amount of people who have good endurance and good strength and good balance is very small, and they are usually found climbing mountains.

Tom, what ever happened to the Navy Seal Challenge, anyway? I know you competed in it a few years back. The website seems to be inactive. Know what became of it?

The Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge was an initiative to bring more, better qualified candidates into the pipeline for Naval Special Warfare and the Special Warfare Combatant Craft Crewman (SWCC). The program acheived its immediate goals.

Interestingly, I was at Luke AFB outside Phoenix over the weekend for the "70 Years of Thunder" air show and the Army and Marines both had put up some type of fitness test promotion both as screening and for entertainment value.

Given recent events I'll suggest the need for physically fit young women and men, especially for America's Special Operations Units, will continue to grow so it's likely we'll see more of these events as recruiting tools.

No no no. The mountains are dangerous. Don't go there! You might die. There are too many of us there already...

i think the whole point is to NOT standardize them. triathlon used to be like this - crazy formats, distances, sometimes repeats of the same course. . . i think something dies when you make it homogeneous.

I definitely agree. Standardized distances/formats have made triathlon less fun, for me at least. I once did an enduro tri (2x 300m swim,7k bike,2k run) and it was the most fun tri I ever did.

I had to youtube Ninja Warrior. That was pretty entertaining!

To answer you question, I'm thinking there's a possibility. Standardizing Mud Runs and Warrior Dashes might take the a lot of the novelty and fun out of it. But, if jumping over fire, eating a turkey leg and wearing a viking cap comes standard in all triathlons, that might be a different story! Yeah, it'd be the fourth leg of the race.
