Hey, I'm new to the fish discussion. I checked out a little bit of the January thread, but could you, please, give a quick rundown of what this is all about?

Okay, another injury means another (forced) swim focus. I've had good results this season off less swimming than years past, but my competition appear to be closing the gap in the water. Back at it...

I did 3000 scy straight yesterday. Stopped because of calf cramps.

I really need to swim less and bike more. Big time. I said that last month too.

Sure. This thread is for posting your swim workouts. We have a google spreadsheet (I can send you access if you PM me with your email address) that we track yards on --- ie, your yards each day. We started that way before ST even had a training log and we've kept it going. You can also make a goal of a total # of swims per week or for the month, or a distance goal.

The purpose is swim motivation and camaraderie.

2300 meters , 1000 warm up , 5-200's and 2-100's followed by 2-50's the 2 - 100's and 2- 50's were hard and I mean fast hard, well at least for me. Funny by the end of this month I will have more swimming in then I did all last year. It's got's to pay some dividends one way or another.

Time trial day; 100 free on :59 and 500 on 6:02. Very happy about the 100, but slightly disappointed in the 500 (oh so wanted to break 6:00, probably should've rested a couple minutes longer, legs were seriously cramped, /excuses).

Whatever the misgivings I've had, definite progress! Peaked at a 5:52 500 in the summer, but I was also swimming exclusively (120,000 yards in July), and took all of October/November off from the pool. If I could get to the 5:40s in the next couple months, I'll be stoked.

I was looking over my shoulder the first couple laps today as we had a shark attack about 80km north and while logically I know the stats say the risk is incredibly small, I was still squirreley. Water and tides were rough enough that I was doing 4 strokes and staying in the same spot (in the troughs) reef-half of each lap. Between the rough water and the shark attack I only did 4 laps (1400ish yd).

Hoping to head out early tomorrow with the dive boat and finish the workout (another 4 laps).

I'll take winter any day before worrying about being shark attacked. At least I don't have to worry about bears in the winter.

I just started training for triathlon (haven't done one since I was 16), here's what I did yesterday. First full week I have swam for years but I swam in high school (30 now):

500 warm
200 kick (100 free, 100 back)
5x100 free on 2:00 @ 1:20
200 kick mixed
100 drill
5x50 free on 1:00 @ :35
100 kick
150 cool

Swimming is *way* harder than I remember it being in high school :) Luckily I've been running for a few months so aerobically I'm ok but my arms have no endurance at all right now.

This workout was one to remember so I thought I had better note it here:

800 w/u
4x200
100 easy
400,300,200,100
200 easy
12x50 kick (MOD/Fast by 50) on 1min
200 easy
8x100 IM on 1:45
300 c/d

Total 4800

My arms are hanging by a thread as fly just kills me and those IMs hurt, really hurt.

Yesterday:

500 wu
15x100 on 2:00 @ 1:30-1:35
500 cd

I forgot my jammers yesterday so I had to swim in my running shorts. Felt like I was wearing a parachute!

If ya'll don't mind, I may be asking a lot of questions about what terminology means. I'm fairly new to swimming with a plan.

I had planned a 5 mile run at lunchtime at work yesterday, but forgot about lunch/meeting about healthcare, free sandwiches! They're starting a healthcare incentive program where they pay us to do various tests, complete surveys and discuss our personal health with healthcare experts. My cholesterol is borderline high so they tell me to exercise more... pfffff!!! Will do that run today.

Sorry, I didn't see this yesterday and just got on now. tc, the links you tried to post before didn't work because you copied the displayed text with the ellipsis (...) in the middle of the URL like this:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/...i=2&pli=1#gid=63

but that's only displayed that way to save space on really long URLs. You could copy the real link from the address bar when you're on the spreadsheet and the part replaced by an ellipsis looks more like this:
/ccc?key=pU-bz1VCoBnuwygvppkKCPw&ui=2&pli=1#gid=63

If you hover your mouse over the working link, you may be able to see the actual URL displayed at the bottom of your browser. If you copy the full URL from the address bar in the spreadsheet and paste it in here it will show up with the ellipsis but the real URL is stored in the HTML code.

I swam 2450 scm with masters this morning.

I guess I will finally leave the seclusion of lurkerdom and start posting...at least for now :D I am doing an "intense" kick week now because my left shoulder hurts like a ****h and i am an even worse kicker then swimmer!!! My "sets" are almost always kinda "go with the flow" but i will try and sorta structure them just so i can post`um :D anywho:
swam 1000free(500fists) then started kicking with fins
200kick, 200sidekickthings,200sidekickthings w/arm extended, 200f,200b...then repeat without fins and no back...

yea still not comfy with the swim notation but maybe it will come to me....

Tibial sfx I suspect...self-diagnosed this time but symptoms, timing, history etc are all there (I've had a few).

My season ended 4 weeks ago due to the above so I've done little apart from the odd spin around the block and splashing about the pool for <1.5k at a time...jumped into a squad this morning and H-O-L-Y crap that almost killed me :) Amazing how quickly you lose touch with the water.

3X (25 kick, 25 right pull, 25 kick, 25 left pull)
50 stroke easy
150 cooldown

1500y total, 25 minutes and change, and I am way out of swim shape. Itd been 6+ months since I was in swim shape. I have a lot of work to do- first tri is 4 months from this saturday.

See above. 1500 yardages this afternoon (and another 4 mi run) because I was tired and stressed and wanted to zone out for a bit. Now I think I am going to do errands and save the work for tomorrow.

On a side note: My left elbow is starting to hurt when swimming. First time for this, does anyone have any experience with elbow issues? I didn't injure it so it must be some sort of overuse/wrong use issue. It hurts right at the exposed tip when the arm is bent. Suggestions welcome!

After no swimming for the past 10 days I finally made it back in the water this morning after spending the past few days catching up on my shoveling from all the snow dumped on my driveway while I was traveling to Mexico.

SCM
400 swim
300 kick/swim
200 drill/swim
100 build

4x(2x75 1:10, 3x50 :45)

Pull
3x400 5:30 descend :10 off each. (4:50, 4:42, 4:36) I was feeling all those days out of the water here and wishing the pool was yards.

200 easy

3600 SCM

Now I have to decide if I bother signing up for New England SCY Championships. Any one else out there signed up?

I was looking at this and thinking, not too bad for a guy claiming he is out of shape for yards, then I saw the meters!! I think you must have a Mexico taper going on here, you sure you didnt pop into the ocean for a seceret swim now and again?? Anyway nice job on the descend, even though you were "out of shape"...(-; Maybe some perspective for those of us that can read this language, what kind of swimmer were/are/age ??

I had kind of a breakthrough today, really thought that since this was my 5th day in a row hard that I would be toast. But I guess I'm finally getting in good shape as I PR'd two different swims for the year today;

5x(200/2x100/4x50) 1st two swim@ 1;30base, 2nd two pull doing one of the 100'sIM @ 1;25 base, last one same at 1;20 base- 200's-2;38/2;24/2;16/2;15/2;12/ 100's- 1;10 to 1;07/ IM's 1;15's/50's-;35/;33
8x100@ 1;30- odds IM, evens pull- free-1;10 to 1;08- IM's 1;13/1;12/1;12/1;06(new pr, in draft of guy that went 1;07, so perfect) 50 easy
100p all out for time, no draft- ;56(another pr this year and was still a bit hammered from the 100IM tt, so quite happy and suprised)

Hi Monty,

I grew up a swimmer. Mainly a 200 breaststroker and 400 IMer. I had a enjoyable college swimming experience and was competitive in pretty much everything but backstroke. After college I just coached, got a real job and put on about 50 pounds. After a number of years I turned to masters swimming around 27. Over the next few years I got back in swimming shape and had over 20 USMS All-American swims and a number of FINA top 10 swims in SCM and LCM for the 25-29 and 30-34 age groups in breaststrokes and IMs. Once I got talked into my first triathlon but a friend who is a much much much faster swimmer than I am, I pretty much ditched masters swimming and tried to get into this more seriously. As I result I lost too much weight/muscle to swim the way I would have liked. But in the process I managed to become a better runner than I had expected after struggling through the run on that first sprint triathlon I competed in against my buddy. These days I pretty much swim the workouts solo so I just do it for sanity a few days a week before work.
Right now I'm trying to focus on running with the Boston Marathon coming up much quicker than I had anticipated.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply Steve. Your friend must be some kind of swimmer to be much, much, much faster than you are. (-; I know what you mean swimming alone, up until about 8 months ago, I pretty much did the same for about 10 years. I'm so happy to be swimming in a lane with guys that are "much "faster" than me now. But now I actually appreciate the days that I get to swim alone in my own lane, so I guess both have their ups and downs. Sounds like you had some good sucess in masters, and now working your way up the triathlon ladder, good for you. Pretty much the same path I took over 30 years ago, and continue on today.

Welcome to the fishies thread, keep the workouts coming. I get a lot of great ideas here for our group, and they think I'm some workout savant. They have no idea that I steal just about everything..(-;

Hey Fishies,

I had to do some more business travel this week (Boston), so I haven't been to the pool since Monday. However, I've been able to keep up with BarryP's 6x/ week running plan during the week. So, for today I decided to make up for lost time and do my own version of an indoor triathlon.

Swim: Jumped in the pool and did 2,000 yards straight. Time 31:23

Bike: Showered, drove home and hopped on the CycleOps 2 fluid trainer and rode 24 miles. Time 1:26:00 (it's a trainer)

Run: Got off the bike and hit the treadmill for my 5 mile "BarryP 1x distance easy day run". Time 40:00.

Tomorrow, long run day.

I didn't go the yardages I planned. The pool was too warm and I did 54 miles on the bike yesterday. (excuses, excuses)

1000 free
5x100 various kicks
200 IM for time - unfortunately one of the two clocks was going slow - guess which one I used. According to it, I did it in 1:50. Based on its speed compared to the other clock, I'm guessing I did a 2:38 or so, and that's really a wild guess.
5x100 on 1:20 - 1:09/:11/:09/:11/:12 (bleah)
3x100 various kick
2x200 on 3:00 - 2:25/:25
100 cool down

3000 scyardages

Nice job there Steve, but I did 55 miles yesterday!! And then did my first real recovery swim for an hour afterwards for my 1st 4 hour day in 4 years. Slept very well last night for sure..

Figured today I would continue and do another recovery swim, but I got sucked into a little harder than I planned, oh well. Going to the mountains for two weeks, so swimming might get a bit more dicey to do, good run and bike focus weeks I guess. todays swim;

3x(300/200/100/200kick) 1st two swim @ 1;30/1;25, last one pull @ 1;20- 300's- 4;06/3;54/3;38- 200's- 2;40/2;29/2;20- 100's- 1;17/1;11/1;06- kicks- 3;39/3;35/3;31

Can't remember exactly but yesterday's was something like:

500 warm
300 kick
100 drill
100 easy free
5x100 free @ 1:15 on 2:00 (first 100 was a 1:10, without straining - getting my stroke back)
500 mix free/kick/drill
5x50 free @ :35 on 1:00
200 easy free
550 mix free/kick/drill

Thinking about either extending the x100 set out to 7-8 reps or maybe doing 5x100 twice and dropping the 5x50s. Would also like to work in some 200s at some point in the next couple weeks, maybe pushing myself with them @ 3:00, but I'm not ready for that yet.

at least your writing hand is getting a workout (oh jeeze just realized you're probably using your computer. Shows how old I am!!)

500 swim
5x150 on 2:00 (about 10 sec rest)
50/100/150/200 based on 1:00/50 alt 50 kick/50 free
100 cool down

Couldn't see the clock today, so no splits. I adapted my workout to another group closer to the clock.
They did 10x50 on the minute, I did the 150s
They did the ladder all free, I alternated with kicks

So birthday season has started... (FYI I only have a sister)

Feb 6 (Niece - turned 3)
Feb 7(Niece - turning 9)
Feb 20 (Son - turning 4)
Mar 1 (me - turning 34)
Mar 30 (Niece - turning 5)
April 18 (Sister - turning 37)
April 30 (nephew - turning 14)
May 16 ( daughter - turning 1, brother in law turning 40)

I'm not counting my 2 aunts, wife's uncle or grandma as they are too far away to regularly attend their birthday.

So the point is I have to plan my training well so I'm not missing out.

I was hoping to swim longer on Sunday but felt that due to the travel time to my sisters I swam short and then did a spin class to maximize my time...

200 easy
1500 build by 500
Av pace for 500s
1 - 1:16
2 - 1:14
3 - 1:12
18:30

1700 scm

My total volmue for the week was not too bad as I got 3 short swims instead of my usual 1 or 2 short / 1 long.

Thanks, it has been this thread along with all the other fishes on here that have kept me motivated to swim more. It has been a long time since I did this kind of yardage and intensity, and I think it is actually paying off now. 6 Months ago I would be trashed after 3k in the pool, now can do 5k and still have a functioning brain cell left..

And I had to take a snapshot from the training log on the top 5 biggest weeks in swimming. Eat my dust Sergio!!!!

I haven't seen anyone break 30k on the top 5 list. Way to go, Monty. I'd love to be putting in that kind of yardage, but time limited. I might even need to cut it back some and spend some AMs running or riding my bike to work. I really need those to improve if I'm going to be any good at all this season.

Actually I didn't either, I think it is counting the last 8 days, not 7. I sent Jordan a note to check it out, but regardless, it is a lot of swimming for me these past months. I actually think I'm fit enough to sit on your feet for a 500!!

I rarely, if ever, post in this thread, but often read through it for workout ideas and to see what the swimmers are talking about. I've been putting in some good yardage since October and am swimming in a meet on Sunday. The big event for me is going to be the 500. My current PR is a 5:46 (from March 2010), but I am pretty confident that I have 5:3x speed in me at this point.
I'll be sure to post some results after the meet.

Any guesses as to what you think I can go? I've already put in just under 100,000 yards in 2011. I've done some big workouts over the last couple months with some highlights being 6x100 at 1:05, 1:05, 1:03, 1:02, 1:01, 1:02 (off the wall), also doing 4x300 touching between 3:30-3:35, leaving on 4:00. Last year, I'd be very happy with touching at 1:08 in a 100 off the wall and that was gearing up for the 5:46. Is sub 5:35 doable?

It looks totally doable for you! Consider a block start and the thrill of competition, etc. Yeah, I bet you'll rock it!

Weeks earlier, I posted a 5:34 and now I doubt that's what I did. One of our two clocks has been getting slower and slower. The other day I did a 200 in 1:50!! That's completely out of my league. I'll have to taper down and push a 500 again.

This AM, the lifeguard was late to the pool, so I only got 1200 yards in
In a miffed mood, I pushed a 500 cold and did 5:54
200 kick
and then another hard 500, but with arms way out of control, I could only muster a 6:00.

Good luck in your race, Bryan.

I'm inclined to say yes, but what did you do that set of 6x100's on? That is as telling about future performance as the actual times you swam. They are in the right ball park for a 5;30+, maybe even better if they were on 1;10. But I'm guessing they something like a 1;30+ base?

Get a good suit, do a little mini taper, and make sure that you cruise that 1st 100, because it will still probably be too fast. Have fun, I can't wait for my 1st meet this season, like you I have been putting in the miles and am very curious as to what it translates to..

Almost forgot, how old are you, and what if any background did you have in your youth?? Old high school or college PR's??

We actually did that as part of a workout we call the "pain train." Three people do the workout...
Swimmer A pushes off for a 100 all out. Swimmer B pushes off for a 50 easy, Swimmer C pushes off for a 50 easy.
As soon as swimmer A touches the wall from their 100 all out, Swimmer B pushes off for their 100 all out, Swimmer C does another 50 easy, Swimmer A does a 50 easy.
As soon as swimmer B touches, Swimmer C starts their 100 all out, Swimmer A pushes off for 50 easy, Swimmer B pushes off for 50 easy.

Basically it's a 200 swim that we continuously do for a set amount of time.

For a typical set of say 10x100, I would comfortably do them on 1:30. The other day I did 6x100 on 1:20.

I'm 25, started swimming in HS and got down to a ~6:15. First year of college - never touched pool, second year I put in some yards, third year I started training again. By senior year, (age 21) (we got a team started at the college) I was down to a 5:48-5:50 for my 500. I've held that speed basically until now consistently putting in between 7-12k yards/week. However, since October, I've been between15k-23k for basically every week.

Thanks, it is my favorite (I only race 1500m). I'll work the 100s up to 15 at that split, then start dropping the 100s and 50s by 5 sec. here and there if I'm getting comfortable. I think it is a productive less than an hour workout.

4.5 mileages and 2600 yardages this morning - plus one hip exercise and two shoulder exercises. I need to get the whole routine done more often.

My stroke didn't feel good yesterday or this AM and it took a lot of easy swimming and stretching to get it to feel good. I left feeling good, but I wasn't doing anything on any intervals which made it feel a lazy 2600. Oh well, it is a yardage!

I've picked up my training for the bike and run, and it shows in my swim. I don't have the energy to swim like I did back in December. It's probably just mental. I've got to work through this, yet keep it fun/entertaining. Posting here helps a lot.

Ha!!! Welcome to triathlon, and let me know when you figure out how to train at all 3 and not have at least one of them suffer...(-; I'm currently just running and biking once a week or so, but ready to add in one more of each. I'm sure my swimming will suffer, but hopefully the base I just built will be enough with some faster stuff to keep me on your feet all summer..

I'm not the killer kicker. I think I swim with a fairly high turnover, thus my kick is a stabilizing type kick. But, yeah, I can tell when my legs are tired - I tend to try to 'reach' more, roll my body more. When I do that, though it feels more efficient, I get even more tired and slow down. I have to concentrate to shorten my stroke, keep the turnover high. Then I can keep my pace up.

And this made me think about doing my harder 500s. I need someone to watch me, but I believe my first 100 I have a very smooth, yet high stroke rate. The next 200, my stroke slows and lengthens. The next 100, it gets sloppy and splashy. Then the final 100, I get my act together, pick up the turnover, kick harder and look like a decent swimmer.

Swimming is the first thing I do in a day, so leg tiredness is a residual from whatever I did the day before. At my age, residual can sometimes last through the night.

When I pull it could be with or without buoy, but always with paddles. I used to use the large trash can lids, but now use the intermediate size, as my old shoulders could not take that much force anymore.. The buoy does'nt make me any faster, but does help me keep a lower HR on really long sets. Actually if I want to go fast, I leave it on the deck and use my kick with the paddles, now you are talking...

I honestly have no idea what I could do for a 500 right now. On a set a couple weeks ago I did 6x500 of various stuff and the first one was a 6;07s at about 85%. You know how I like to swim, always descend my efforts, regardless of what I'm swimming or what toys I have on. So maybe close to what you did, but it is only talk until I actually do it, right???

My next big tt will be a 400IM, so that with the splits tells me pretty close to what I can do for a 500fr. Whatever I come home in the last 100 free +1 or 2 seconds, gives me my 500 avg pace..

But all that aside, pulling for me translates into much faster race times in the OW, and my butterfly swims. Probablty a sholder strenght thing, gets me through the non stop swimming of OW better than most. You would just hate my group at the pool too Ken. We have guys and gals that use fins the entire time to stay on interval, a 59 year old that never takes off the buoy, but even if he does for a tt, still kicks my ass, and another half of the 50+ guys using paddles to keep up with the 30+ and 40+ year olds that still swim 1;10 for a base anytime they feel like it. But no one cares what is going on with someone else, as long as everyone is in the right spot in the lane for whatever speed they can swim..

I did Hawaii 15 times, and mostly did 50 flat to 51+ every year, keeping up with guys that would lap me 4 or 5 times in the pool over that distance, and I pulled over 1/2 my workouts then too. Someone just posted up recently that our best OW pro guy pulls almost 100% of his workouts. It wasn't broke back then, so I figure why change now...

I doubt that I can keep up with you on that one. But, I'll try to do as many 300's as I can tomorrow.

By the way, I need to take a break from running for a couple of days. I've been doing BarryP's 6x/week running since 11/8/10. I'm up to 45 miles/week right now and feel some minor shin splints coming on. There's no sense trying to be the champion of February.

Are you guys getting good results with mixing paddles into your sets? I'm looking for ways to increase upper body fitness and am wondering if paddles could speed that up a little.

As soon as swimmer A touches the wall from their 100 all out, Swimmer B pushes off for their 100 all out, Swimmer C does another 50 easy, Swimmer A does a 50 easy.
As soon as swimmer B touches, Swimmer C starts their 100 all out, Swimmer A pushes off for 50 easy, Swimmer B pushes off for 50 easy.
.

I read this the other day and it came in handy at today's workout. They reconfigured the pool for the girls HS state meet and we were swimming in the diving well and it was somewhere around 30 yards long. So we did a 5, 10, and 15 minute swim, mixing it up with every 4th lap drill, storke, or sprint, and/or combinations of the above.
With about 20 minutes left I suggested the pain train. Since there were only 3 of us it worked out well. At first I thought it was going to be too easy of a set but after a couple of rotations I felt the pain ;) Thanks for the idea!

Thanks, and glad you liked it.
I've found it be be a fairly appropriate amount of rest. You could still use more, but it is enough for you to get up to max speed. If you truly do the 100's all out, after 2 or 3 times through, it get tough. The most I've ever done is 12 rotations through. It'd be fun to go for 15 one day.

For some extra strenght and a high elbow focus, I get great results from paddles. Just be aware that all pulling is not created equal. I have found that good swimmers benifit from it the most as far as strenght building, but crappy strokes tend to fall into a front quadrant only type of pull. I take off the wrist strap so that there is no way for me to use them without high elbows, and I have to pull correctly the entire stroke. Give it a try and just keep tabs on your shoulders, tired is ok, but weakness or pain means ditch them for awhile.

So I had another 45 minute window today as one camper wanted to swim(lucky it was the boss) and I thought about you Ken, and your distaste for my workout choices. Still at altitude, but held the pulling down to just 2- 200's. Are you proud of me?? (-;

Am having a big swimming focus for the next 3 weeks as have the sprint state champs (16-19)... Over 1500m I only losing 1:40 to the best swimmers (which is a managble gap thanks to biking strength) but over 500m I am losing 1min (game over for a sprint).... Hence more speedwork needed. All sessions are 2k's (LCM)

Warmup always 5x100m (swim-drill-paddles-drill-paddles) usually followed by a 400m time trial (flat out) unless I am doing my OD-HIM special the 500-400-300-200-100 w/20s rest.

Main sets are either:

2(5x100 with 15s rest)
4x 200 (mod-hard-mod-hard)
10x50m and 5x100m

Will be doing a 2k TT (with an eye to Aus Long Course Champs) and lots of 50m intervals over the coming weeks.

Thanks monty. Technique wise I am pretty solid, I swam for several years when I was younger - so I think the paddles might help out with upper body conditioning.

Honestly when I was swimming we all looked at them as a cheap way to get yardage in, but being totally out of shape swimming wise I can see how they would be useful!

I am looking to work on my speed endurance tomorrow morning...

here is what I was thinking of doing... I don't want my long rest 100's to be super long (we used to do this type of set as a 12 x 100 1 F/1E but with a 2:30 base), my aim is to build max fitness for the 750/800 distance. I figure that if I swim 1:10 I have 2:20 to do the easy hundred in say 1:40 leaving me 40 sec to ready myself for the next fast 100. I expect they will all be under 1:10. If I have to strip off a few things I could downsize the session to 3000 metres or so...

W/U
300 S (75 FR/25BK)
200 K

Transition Set
4 X 50 VARIABLES @ 50
20 SEC
4 X 50 TEMPO @ 45

300 P
Main Set
20 X 100 FREE 1 FAST/ 1 EASY @ 1:45 BASE
SWIM FAST REPEAT REST FOR A FEW SECONDS AND START RECOVERY 100 - START NEXT FAST 100 @ 3:30

800 SWIM IN ~ 11:00 TO COOLDOWN

Nice job Ken, that is a 1;10 average for 2100 on relatively good intervals. You might be looking at your 1000tt pace there?? You still have a couple weeks to fine tune and taper. We gotta find you a meet in Feb somewhere before you take your vacation...

My son got up too early & had to scrub my planned swim. Did 1:05 of skiing (at redline) ...+25 min swim during his lessons.

Did some easy paddling and finished with some fast 25's working on setting up my set that will now be tomorrow.

Pretty tired after the 22x200 yesterday, but as another camp arrives tomorrow, and I miss 3 or 4 days of swimming, I drove the hour down the mountain to hit a sat lap swim, figured I'd pile a little more on while I'm healthy and uninjured..Did another boring, but epic set:

15x300, straight through- All swims at a 4;30 base, and all kicks at 6;00 base
4swim descend- 4;02/3;52/3;45/3;38- kick-5;24

4500SCY- and boy were my arms/legs tired at the end. Kind of glad to have some days off the pool now.

Didn't quite have the time to do the planned workout but here is the short version I did.

500 (alt swim/kick by 100)
4 x 50 variables @ 55
200 pull

25 easy swim

main set
6 x ~200 @ 3:30

100 Fr - Fast - (edit - all were from a push)
100 Choice - Easy

1 - 1:04
2 - 1:04
3 - 1:04
4 - 1:04
5 - 1:03
6 - 1:03

25 easy swim

100 Fast - 1:04 (push)
50 easy

2200 SCM

60 min spin class

hopeful for a 60 min ski or outdoor ride later today... I'm taking a 5 day rest from running to see how my ab issue works on itself.

The 100's were faster than I thought and hurt less than I thought, I think I hit my current sweet spot (speed / efficiency). Trying harder would probably yielded slower times as I think my efficiency would have suffered. Hopefully I can do the full set next time and hit 1:03 or better on all of them. Gotta practice fast to race fast.

Likewise with the flip turns for me . . . or, as I put it, throwing myself at the wall repeatedly. It's coming along slowly. Still getting water up my nose, but I don't end up quite as dizzy, or feeling like I'm gonna puke.

14,700 yards last week. (That's more distance than I ran.) 10,000 the week before. It appears that unlike all of the previous times I've said it, this winter I'm taking swimming more seriously.

Good job Bryan on your swims, the 500 and 1000 looked solid. And the 100 was pretty much in line with your rolling 50, so not bad, especially when you figure the culmulative effect of swimming all those races in one day. Did you actually do much real speed work leading up, or more distance?? Not bad on the 50 breast either, i will swim the 100 instead, but that is about what my goal time would be for a 50. When you get old like me, either all you have is 50 speed, or none at all, nothing inbetween. I will podium in my distance events, and in the 50's I'm lucky to get top 20..

And how did Ken's gal do at the meet, sounds like she has been rocking some good workouts. Just want to know if I would get chicked and geezered at the same time, now that is a depressing thought...I guess I always have that 50fly to hold onto some sembelance of my machoness..(-; Anyway, thanks for posting up your results for us..

Thanks, monty.
That's very true about the cumulative effect. The 100 was only about a half hour after the 1000, so I was definitely a little tight from that.
I did the 50 Breast over the 100 because the 100 was right before the 500, so I didn't want to mess that up. I guess I'm not disappointed with my time, it's jsut that I seeded myself 2.5 seconds faster! I had no clue!
The lady Ken knows is didn't swim her usual events. She's usually good for ~5:40 in a 500, though, and is somewhere in the 50-54AG. Very strong swimmer!

Some very fast young'uns there. Don't know why Nancy chose to swim what she calls "short stuff" like the 200 fly.

If I had known for sure that Bryan was going to be there, I'd have suggested (in a PM :-) he "check out" another of our morning women...

Good job, Bryan. Nothing like starting your meet with a 1000 free!

Ya, we have about 4 or 5 of those kind of girls at our workouts too, only one big problem. I'm swimming with all their fathers in my lanes, so it is very hard for me to sneak peaks, and even when I do, I get a very weird vibe, like I'm some kind pervert.. Then some other gal walks by, and the fathers and I all oogle together, and the world is right again...

Winter thaw this weekend: 17 1/2 mile run and 30 mile road bike = easy swim on Monday.
1500yds mostly drill and kick.
Tried something new today. Kick w/o board using snorkle. Face down, arms stretched out in front, hands crossed was easy on neck and felt fast (for me). I will do more of these.......

Three sets I enjoyed from a masters group I trained with during vacation:

2x through the following, all on 1:10 interval — 50, 75, 50, 100.

2 sets of 5x100 — first and last of each series straight through for time; second one a 25, :10 rest, then a 75; third one a 50, :10 rest, then another 50; fourth one a 75, :10 rest, then a 25. We did it on 2:30 with it in mind to go all-out each time.

10x100 IM — odds take out 25 of your worst stroke and replace with 25 of your best stroke, other than freestyle (i.e., by 25, fly-fly-breast-free); evens straight 100 IM. @ 2:30, I think.

Haha. Chances are I was on the lookout anyway!!!
Gotta love the distance events. There's another meet March 19th at Drew U if you're interested. The final event is a 1650..I wouldn't have it any other way.

Since this is a workout thread, I'll post the workout I did this morning.
500 W/U
10x50 - 25 kick/25 drill
4x150 Pull on 2:10
3x450 with fins, 75swim, 75kick repeated 3 times.
No cool down as I realized I was 5 minutes late.

Flip Turns: Day 2. Much more comfortable today with the turn, but man what happened to my breathing?

I guess I really was taking in a big gulp of air as I was hanging onto the rail during an open turn.

I'm starting to time my last breath better before the turn, but still had to go back to some basic breathing exercises after my main set.

Wanted to negative split it and felt good, but had to change lanes unexpectedly at about 2200. Threw off my rhythm, but still somewhat built the last 500.

Thanks,

the emergency room was a breeze compared to when we have taken our son. But given her underlying medical issues it makes total sense, I'm sure there were people in the waiting room that were thinking WTF when we got called back to a treatment room in under 5 minutes. She had lost a bunch of weight too. I'm hoping we don't have to go again tonight. She had a slight relapse today so our clinic nurse had a pow wow with their team and we just gave her pedialite for her last feed and will resume her EBM/Formula combo on her next feed.... If it doesn't go well back she goes. I am so glad we live 15 minutes from top notch children's hospitals.

EDIT:

She's probably in overnight and I am home with the boy... nothing like a Thomas the train video... oh yeah the tranny in our minivan is dying too...

Looking at a lot of the previous posts, I'm not the only one that got left out of the water this week. And Albert, good luck with the kids, sounds like tough times in your household right now.. Got a break in the camp yesterday, went to the pool, and it was closed due to wind and a little sprinkles..We really are a bunch of pansies here in CA, I know a lot of you are trudging through many feet of snow to get to your pools, hats off..

So today made it and it was sunny and 55, so no problems, except that halfway through my legs started cramping and I had to do the soft push the rest of the way. Oh well, at least I'm back at it, still at altitude:

500/400/300/200/100swim @ 1;25 base 6;33/5;10/3;49/2;30/1;10
200 kick(cramped here, so worked harder than the times now suggest)
500/400/300/200/100pull@ 1;20 base- 6;13/4;54/3;39/2;24/1;08
100kick, 4x25fly/free

Yep. I'm deciding whether or not to take legal action against a certain entity which would mean the end of my livelihood as I know it. Got into my suit, stood at the water's edge, turned around and headed back to read more cases.

Maybe this weekend....

Ya, the better shape I get in, it seems the gap gets closer and closer from my paddle to swim times. I think it is because of the IM and fly that I have added to my workouts, seems to make my free a little faster.

Nice job on that workout, that is some fast swimming on a very tight intervals. Were you feeling tapered or something? Perhaps your impending break is lighting a fire under you. You really should find a meet and go swim with Bryan. I think you could keep up with him at this point, and give you some good goals to break when you make your comeback.

I'm back at the beach today, gonna go swim with the group before the storm hits. We are supposed to get 3 days of crap weather, so they may close the pool for the weekend.Doesn't take much around here for everyone to batten down the hatches..

Yes. :-)

50 between each 200/100/50, plus a 50 between each 4x set. So not as brutal as it might be, but I pushed it rather hard and it took longer and longer in each 50 to recover.

Monty, I used part of your set this morning. Thanks for the idea.

WU - 1000
Pre Set -
4x75 - Stroke (1:10)
6x50 - Drill (:50)
8x25 - Build each 25 (:30)
Main Set - Done two times...
9x100 - Decrease interval 5 seconds after 3 and 6. (My slowest 100 was a 1:10, the rest between 1:05 and 1:09)
6x75 - 25 stroke, 25 easy free, 25 hard free (on 1:15)
5x50 - Odd Fast, Even Easy (:45)
Cool down -
200 easy

Not a bad way to 5000 yards. Second time through hurt a lot more than the first!

To put it mildly, probably the most dominant distance swimmer of all time..Leave it to the ST sleuths to figure that one out.

Thought I was going to get shut out with the weather today, but it turned out to be sunny and warm after all. I was figuring that my tapered speed workout yesterday was going to blast me today, but the taper is still on. Did my longest of the decade, and ok paces throughout and straight through, no breaks:

20X100- 5swim, 1IM/4s- 1IM/3s- 1IM/2s-1IM/1s-1IM, all at 1;30 base- free-1;18 to 1;15, IM's 1;21 to 1;18
4x100kick IM @ 2;00- 1;50 to 1;43
12x50- 3fly/3bk/3brst/3fr @ 1;00/;45/1;00 - fly's 35/35/34- bk's- 41/39/40- brst's- 43/41/42- free's- 34/33/31
4x50IMkick@ 1;00- 54 to 51
500pull@ 7;00- 6;01- 5x100p@ 1;20- 1;10 to 1;07
4x50IM kick@ 1;00- 55 to 50
20x25 @;30 fly/free- fly's 15 to 17
4x50IM kick@ 1;00- 56's

It wasn't me... I swear.

Seriously got back in the saddle today with an easy unstructured 2500 (scm). I should be fine in a week or so. The enforced break has helped my abdominal issue, I booked a follow up with the doc the same day as my son's annual check up. The poor little boy has been GI sick since very late Wednesday night, same thing as the little one. He's lost 3 pounds and can barely keep his pants up, the poor little guy's B-Day (4) is tomorrow & we moved his party back to next weekend. It will be a fun weekend as he has swimming & his party on Saturday and then my co-worker's daughter has her party the next day and they have booked some ice at a nearby rink.

Ha! on the 10th, my company had a health fair and one spot had one of those BMI machines that looks like an oversized xbox controller. It measured my body fat at 22.2% and BMI of 25.7. So, according to it, I'm a fatty. After yesterday's swim, I dragged this fat mass of mine over 7 miles of running. If the weather holds up, I'll do another run today and a ride tomorrow.
Great job on your swims, btw!

Just reading that workout you did made my arms tired, and feel very heavy. Man you swam that set the tough way, balls out, nice job hanging on, and some pretty smoking splits too.

Had a day out of the pool yesterday, so figured today would be a last hard day before I go into taper mode for the b-day set on monday. Had two of our studs there, but they just got back from a week of skiing in Tahoe, so it was my time to strike at them, and we went 3 wide in the lanes, all leading the entire time. My fastest main set of the last few years leading on little rest:

See, everything has structure... :P

But seriously, I had a monster PR by 30seconds. Went 12:17! Which is great for me! I was only thinking about trying to be able to hold 1:15's by the end of the season.

If you care to notice my last post on this thread:

Way to go dude, that is a solid time. How did you split the 500's? What do you think the breakthrough was attributed to? I know for me it has been getting involved in the challenges and this paricular thread for motivation. Looking through my logs, I have doubled my yardage and now feel good at the end of hard workouts, and not completely trashed. Next stop should be that 100 for you, new goal of :58!!!

It is possible (but probably hard), I think, to have not gone 6:14 or faster on any consecutive 500 in a 1000 done in 12:17. Just sayin' :-)

Thanks monty!

That's great to hear coming from a great swimmer such as yourself!

Looking through my logs, my last 3 weeks (wince I went 12:47) my ypw: 3k, 17k, 18k. The 3k week was a down week where the pool was closed without notice an hour early on two occasions. I really think two things helped. I have been doing a ton more speed work swimming with the team doing short stuff. Also, there was a really hot girl in the lane next to me that was faster and the only way I could look at her butt was if I just held on to her pac right at her hip. ;-)

I actually think I can go faster! maybe sub 12:10 becuase I always feel better having swam the day before, and I didn't swim on tuesday at all.

I plan on getting pretty fast this summer. I want to up yardeage to 25-30k per week. (I'm interested in ITU stuff)

Here is the full quote from last post:

Quote:
It was then that I decided it would be a good time to try to take down my 100free PR of 1:02 (set in high school about 8 months ago)
So I got out, jumped up on the blocks, then almost got blown off because of aforementioned hurricane, and threw down a 57.55! Boo-yah! I'm improving!

New goals:

100fr: 56
200fr: 2:15
500fr: 5:50
1000fr: 12:00

This is exactly what I try and tell some of the good guys I run into from time to time, get you 100 time down, and the 1000, 2000, and 4000 will follow. Yes extra yards is a good thing, but once you have hit a cruising level of yardage, focus on speed.. Good job once again, but I think you have to lower your 200 goal. You could do 2;15 in workout from a push I bet, and probably a few times with some rest inbetween...

And I remember that hot girl scenario, may be the single biggest motivator a guy can have..

I hope you are right. It has been a long time goal of mine to make the ITU "B" standard:

200 under 2:15

1min rest

800 in under 10min.

It's nice to actually see the work pay off and now I know I'm close!

Monty, are you still trying to go for the 2000yd kick?

I think you could do that now, as long as you pace well. Like I said, the 2;15 should be just a medium hard effort at your speed, and then you go into 1;15 pace, no problem. You just did 1;13+ pace for the 1000, and I bet you could have paced that better for a faster time. What were your splits by the way??

The kicking thing I did was back when we were doing the 500 and 30 min challenges, and I ended up doing 1730 kick for the 30 minutes. It was really good for me as my goal was actually to just do a 1650 kick in 30 minutes, exceded my expicatations by quite a bit.. My actual swim meet schedule should start March 6th, so I will have some legit off the block times to begin working off of..

Ya it was Janet Evans, although Brian does swim there too. I think Janet may have been the most dominant distance swimmer ever. Her records stood for decades, and those times even today would be hard to beat giving the technology of her day.. Interesting thing is what kind of times she is doing in workout, I'm wondering if she is going to make a run at masters, or even some kind of comeback. 6X500 on the 6;00, holding 5;30's seems like more than just recreational swimming. Another set was repeating 75's at 41 and 42, so a good mix of speed and endurance. I would love to see her in either capacity, otherwise we will just have to get excited about the ocasional workout she busts out..

I do know that my tt 4 weeks ago, I went 12:47 (a pr then). And I split 6:14 for my 500 ( which was a 500 pr also)

Where do you swim? CA? Cause I'm trying to join a masters program. I would love to get my butt kicked ny a serious swimmer instead of by these kids that look like they don't know what they are doing...

8am scm swim.

10x50 wu

400 TT (impromptu on a whim): 5:10
15year PB whoo hoo - could probably have done a sub 5 if I had prepared head and body for an all out effort

10x100 @1:40 ~1:15
20x50P @55 ~35 (a hard pull set after the main set seems to "all out fatigue" the arms - should be good, no?)

200 wd

total 3100 scm

I don't know if this is the right forum for this, however since you are all great swimmers, I have a question:

First of all, I am HORRIBLE swimmer - 2:00 / 100yds.

Do you think its better if I do long swims to stretch myself out or speed drills? I have 3 1/2 IMs scheduled later in the year and have 2 IMs planned next year..

Currently, I am swimming 3-4 days a week, maxing out at around 1800yds a day with some speed drills (12 - 25s on 25 sec & 6 - 50s on the 50-55s) and some distance swims (400, 600, 800).

My 1st race is 10 weeks away, so I have some time to up my workload.

My goal isn't to be the worlds fastest swimmer, its just to not be the last person out of the water in my wave, then play catchup the next 2 legs.

Any help is appreciated.

There are far better swimmers posting on this thread then me, but I would say that you need to up your distance from 1,800 yds each workout. You should be doing at least your 1/2 IM distance each time.

In the short time that I've been back swimming, I've found that the variation of sets each week has helped tons. Of my 2 or 3 swims each week, one day is 500's and another is either 200's or 300's (all timed to keep me focused). I throw in long sets when I get a chance to do my 3rd swim of the week.

Now I'll let the fishes reply.

100 swim / 100 kick x 2

300 pull

20 x 75 @ 1:10 av 58-60 (felt easy)

100 cool down

Ouch.
That is really inefficient - a swimmer would have difficulty swimming freestyle that slow.

First - adress and get help for your form.

When you're down to 1:40/100yds with little effort - add "workouts" to your swim practice.

Look at this. It's not the end of swimming performance but it's a good step-stone.

did an easy 1500 during lessons again... should be able to do some harder stuff in the AM... I went skiing from 9-10 am and swam during my son's 12-12:30 lesson and was not tired. wierd weather this week, uber cold Monday to Friday, warms up for the weekend and then uber cold for the upcoming week, what gives... looks like the following weekend we will crack 0C and hopefully the day time temps will largely stay there.

Ya, way to go Ken. I asked you to put it out there for Halfspeed and I, and boy did you. I doubt that I will do it from a push in workout, but I will say that I have to do a 56 low from a dive to equal what you did. Only question is, if I will get a chance to swim a 100 free, maybe on a relay, I will try and lead off. I already don't have enough meets and swims to do the events I want to. Gonna try and do a short pentathlon next sunday if i can work it out. 50 of each and a 100 IM, all my worst distances, but at least not long enough to be painful. Only thing that hurts is seeing your time after it is all done, and the 65+ guys kicking your ass!!! Maybe if I can do a 26 flat for my 50 I might have a chance at you. Good thing you are in that younger AG than me, or I would really feel bad..(-;

Good luck with the surgery, speedy recovery..

What a fun month of swimming. I've never had so much incentive to improve until I joined this monthly thread. Thanks all. And now the bad news. No swim today as somehow I effed up my knee. Can't hardly walk with the most pain just trying to get to a standing position. Heading to the doc to see what I done to it.

Hope the knee is better in short order.

This hasn't been a good month of swimming for me but I'm looking to do better in March. I got bogged down with school, general exhaustion, and other excuses this month.

Thanks for your advice, I will try that and if/when I get down to 1:40 I'm gonna fricken celebrate.

O and btw, your right it is terribly difficult to go that slow, but I have sped up from my races last year where I averaged 2:30 / 100yds...now that's SLOW.

I am getting lessons at the Y, where I swim with the 8yo girls who crush me, its very embarrassing.

Thanks again for your help.

Swam 3000 scy yesterday with a light bike and elliptical afterward. Trying to be easy on my left foot.

Anyway, 3000 was mostly easy only things of note were 5x100 at 1:20 leaving on 2:00, and a 1000 in 15:00.

I'd like to be able to do a workout of 4000scy in an hour before the year is out.. Might be pushing it a little, but I think I can at least get close. The 1000 was that pace and I swam the first 700 of that easy. The trick is not pushing too hard, I've always had a problem racing during my swim workouts.

Thanks TC. It appears I got bit by some insect just below my knee - little purple spot. So I have an infection and am taking antibiotics. Should clear up fast.

Sorry to hear about your knee, but at least you know what it is and that you will be good to go soon;

So birthday set is in the books, after a 500 warm up, did the 55x 100SCY @ 1;15p. We started with 4 in the lane, but #2 dropped at 8, so we had to do that one on the 1;10. But I held 1;07 to 1;09's the entire time, and busted out a 1;05 on the last one. The guy leading was on fire, so he stayed there the entire 55, doing 1;07's to 1;04's. He is 45 years old, the guy in 2nd position is turning 60, and he held 1;07 to 1;10's. It's a tough crowd I swim with, and 3 of the guys were no shows. So average of all who made it was about 53, so you and Ken would have fit right in..

Awesome set, Monty and Happy Birthday! Welcome to the double-nickel club. I haven't even attempted any repeats on the 1:15 yet.. amazing!

I think I'll be swimming tomorrow, though I may need to use the ladder to climb out of the pool. Keeping the knee flexible/in motion without really stressing it will be good.
At the end of April, one of the pool mangers is turning 60 and we're having a 6000 yard pool party followed by an on-deck potluck dinner. It should be fun. It won't be anything like your set, though, as most these guys are slow. I can typically lap them within 200 yards. So maybe I'll add another 10% to 20% to the yardage.
