Diet soda withdrawal
For awhile now I have had a two, 20oz bottle per day habit of Diet Dr. Pepper. I decided that all those chemicals, while they may not yet be proven to be bad for me, probably aren't good for me either. Plus the artificial sweetener definitely triggers cravings.

I have gone three days now without and I am getting wierd withdrawal symptoms. I have a slight migraine and feel a little moody. It's not caffeine withdrawal - I still continue to drink coffee and tea, and I have tried to quit those in the past as well and failed, so I know what caffeine withdrawal feels like and this is definitely not it.

Has anyone else experienced aspartame withdrawal when trying to quit diet soda, and about how long did it last? Did you see any medium-to-long term benefits to it once you quit, like reduced cravings etc?

What about cutting down slowly instead of cold turkey?

I drank a boatload of Diet Mt. Dew and quit cold turkey. I missed it and had similar withdrawal symptoms for about a week or so. Don't miss it at all now.

Yeah. I need to quit too. I down about a 12 pack a day at least. Plus a couple 44 oz drinks from the Racetrack or QT. I was on Diet Mountain Dew but switched to Diet Dr. Pepper.

I stopped for about 2 weeks but I'm back at it again.

I seriously don't think I can give up my diet coke habit. It's bad. I feel like I actually need it. I wish you luck and look forward to hearing how it goes.

Just keep drinking LOTS of water. Your system's flushing out all the crap, so you're going to feel crappy until you get rid of it all.

You should feel 100% better in a couple more days. Just take it one day at a time (or one hour, or one min...).

Good Luck!

I quit Diet Pepsi cold turkey and started drinking sparkling water since I missed that part the most. No symptoms. And no, I will never give up coffee, though I have cut back on the amount.

Its the caffeine giving you withdrawl symptoms. . Most sodas are loaded. If you tough it out, it will go away in a few days. Otherwise have a cup of tea or coffee to wean yourself off of it.

I quit my diet coke habit about 6 months ago. It sucked in the exact manner you describe for about 5 days for me. Now I feel a LOT better.

Drink lots of water. Flush that shit out of your system.

Google aspartame poisoning. You will not want any more diet drinks.

I need help breaking my Mountain Dew habit - the full tilt version. I try to limit myself to one 20oz a day but I keep trying to quit all pop - regular and diet.
I keep failing. Hoping to break it in 2011. Tips for dealing with the psychological warfare of quitting?

I share your DDP jones. I gave it up last year for about 6 weeks. Withdrawals last about a week - after that I didn't crave it. Cold Turkey is the way to go. Unfortunately I don't like coffee .....trying to switch to tea this time but there really is no substitute for an icy cold DDP.

Switch to Pepsi Throwback. It's got REAL SUGAR, none of this fake sweetener!

I was the same, then onto Coke Zero when it came out- I'd drink 1-2 one liter bottles a day. I went cold turkey, never really felt any effects, and stayed off it for 1.5 years. I can't say I felt any different at all existing just on water as an everyday drink. For no good reason I started up again drinking various diet sodas when my son was born, and although I kind of disliked the taste when I started again, I'm back into it now, but a little less than my previous habit.

For all those people that say you feel so much better without the stuff, I noticed not one bit of difference.

you may have withdrawal symptoms but they will lessen in 3-5 day and be totally gone in 2-3 weeks. You just have to get through the first sucky part of it.

I gave up real coke about 3 years ago but just can't shake coke zero.

Water doesn't do it for me.

I am seriously addicted to diet coke. I switched to caffeine free a few years ago (to avoid dehydrating effects). I can't imagine my day without it--drinking water non-stop has no appeal. Giving up alcohol for >1 year was no problem at all. However, whenever I go outside the US, I have little desire for coke light (the ex-US version of DC has a different formulation which doesn't appeal). Maybe you can switch to another (less appealing & using a different sweetener) diet soda whenever you get cravings. Then it will be easier to kick the habit all together (sort of like taking methadone to kick heroine as it is less addictive).

My only hope is that diet coke is discontinued in the U.S. I don't know how much of Coke's $30+ billion dollars in revenue is due to diet coke in the US but I am guessing it is significant so I have little hope!

I found drinking soda was more of a habit than a desire to drink for thirst. I started to notice that I was buying soda and would take a few drinks and think to myself that I wasn't even really thirsty. I quit cold turkey August 2004 and haven't had even a sip of soda since then. Now I drink too much iced tea........but have recently tried mixing in some vitamin water and such to try and reduce my tea drinking habit.

I gave up the stuff for a long while. No percievable difference in how I felt or my athletic performance.
I've read that the pH level in soda is equivalent to that of battery acid. I figure limiting or eliminating sodas can't hurt long term benfits to overall health.
I now might drink one when I go out to dinner or one or two at social functions totaling less than 36 to 48 oz. per month.
