Where do we begin? The kid with the aero helmet 5 sizes too big is cheating already being over the line before the start. His race number is GIGANTIC. The girl next to him is racing in a skirt? The kid with the aero helmet appears to be riding some sort of hybrid of a BMX, mountain, road and cross bike.

The kid in the aero helmet is using mom/dads wheelset, too. Those appear to be Lightweights and cost a couple grand per set.

Those are Lightweight wheels, the wheelset alone prob cost more than my entire tri bike.

I think the parents must have read the argument on whether or not to use an aero helmet for an IM distance ride. Some people's aruments were: "The slower you go, the more you have to gain from using an aero helmet."

The only thing I saw was the guy in the background with the Wyoming shirt.

Only after 10 minutes of examination did I notice a kid on a bike with Lightweight wheels, Di2, and carbon bike with a VO2 max of probably 25 ml/kg/min. Boys and their toys.

They are 650s. Lightweight doesn't really make them anymore, but were willing to do a small run with a little convincing.

I think it does a good job of advertising how custom they can go. Look at their other bikes to see more normal stuff. I think the wood bike really is a one of a kind job, just like this one.

Also, they only built this bike because someone commissioned it. Get mad at them, not kirklee.

More likely to see her on MTV's "My Super Sweet 16" calling her mother a cocksucker for buying her the wrong color Range Rover for her birthday.

Okay, maybe not.

You might be right. She might be the next Chrissie, but at what point does her parents choice of equipment stop being what is appropriate and adequate to support her development as a young athlete and start being a platform for making a statement about her family's wealth. Just like the parents and the kids on that TV show, this kid's parents probably started off with good intentions, but their egos and incredible lack of judgement and humility got the better of them. Now their kid is a minor internet celebrity and a testiment to all that's wrong with youth sports.

And her seat is too high. ;>)

If this young lady is the next great thing perhaps she would be better served racing juniors instead of the Everyone Gets A Ribbon Parade Fun Race that is supposed to encourage new riders and not crown existing ones.

He also has super expensive wheels.

How do we know it was the parents idea? I have a 10 year old that just did his first Duathlon. My kid was totally into it and wanted to emulate his mom (who rocks at Dus). He borrowed a couple of minor pieces of equipment from us - mom's number belt and my favorite water bottle. If he had asked to use something else, we would have probably loaned him damn near anything he wanted. It was a hoot watching him get into it totally on his own motivation.

Probably nothing more than a kid who's into it borrowing mom or dad's stuff. No biggie. If the aero helmet actually FIT this kid, THAT would be ridiculous.

Without knowing the circumstances I'm not going to make fun of anyone for this.

I think the kid's parents need to grow up.

Margaret was confident she could beat the field blindfolded...until she looked immediately to her right and saw little Susie actually was racing blindfolded with an ill-fitting helmet. Combined with the cycling gloves and spokey dokeys, Margaret was suddenly shook.

Hell, I didn't really notice anything at first. I wouldn't have picked out the Di2, the frame make or anything. Just some mild amusement from the helmet and wheels, the latter of which I've also not encountered.

All I can say is I hope the kid has fun and counts his/her blessings. What a machine!

I have a daughter about this age who does a kids tri every once and a while. She looks a lot like the little girl wearing the skirt and rides a bike with tassels hanging from her handlebars. When she finishes a race, she has a big smile on her face. She will probably be doing triathlons and other athletic events for many years to come because they are fun and she enjoys them. The kid, in the photo, with the aero helmet and several thousand dollar bike will probably burn out sooner than later. I hope this was a staged photo and not from a real race.

What you mention is very true, but that applies only to normal kids.

Some abnormal kids take things very seriously since very young (Carlos Sastre (8), Lance Armstrong (10), Hunter Kemper (10), to name three) and never burn out, or they do, but after many years of being a pro. Some other great riders also start very young, realize they don't have what it takes to be a pro, but keep racing succesfully into the veteran ranks (I know a few of these). It depends on the kid.

Regarding the aero helmet. I once saw a photo of Arnie Baker breaking away on a road race wearing what seemed to be an LG Rocket helmet. I asked him why he was using it, he said that because it was legal under USAC rules and because it gave him an edge (at least the first time I guess). Go figure.

I guess that kid in the photo is just a kid on a nice bike using dad's or mom's helmet and wheels. I am more worried about the girl to her right, whose parents let her race blindfolded.

That's a handbuilt KirkLee carbon frame. The wheels are 650's ordered specifically for this bike because Lightweight wasn't making 650's anymore. Say what you want about a kid that age having a custom $10k bike, but the bottom line is that it's a beautifully built bike...
