The human junkyard: List your injuries here.
Let's see how busted up we all are. Put your injury list here: Broken bones, surgeries, diseases, overuse injuries.

Spare us the minor bumps and bruises. We're looking for the heavy stuff here.

Thank you advance for not being too gross.

hmmm.... during tri career :

Peroneal tendonitis (tendon detaching from bone during IM it was so bad)

Torn vaseus medialus

Torn hamstring (right in the middle too)

Stress fracture of 5th metacarpal bone in foot

I did get hit by a car, but only had minor bumps and bruises, so I guess I'm pretty lucky. I do have 2 scars from it if that counts?

I don't think I have any diseases, I may have OCD about triathlon now :)

I'll play.

Non-displaced fractured great toe. (You can hurt yourself if you messup a flip turn)

Three broken toes (Hit the wall hard in intramural basketball)

Dislocated shoulder (Rugby)

Late onset Oshlegger's (sp?) knee (Water polo)

Tracking problem right shoulder (Water polo)

Fractured cheek bone, facial nerve paralysis, temporary (Rugby)

And this year, displaced fibula fracture and tore the deltoid ligament clean off the bone. (Any bonus points for real pain? I had to hobble 1~ mile back to the car) Two screws and a reattached ligament and 7 months on the bench. (Triathlon)

~3rd degree sprain - L ankle
~3rd degree sprain - R ankle (1 yr later)
~2nd degree sprain, MCL damage R knee
~2x Whiplash (football injury followed several years later by a car accident)
~Tibial stress fractures/shin splints - both legs, too many times to count
~Highly agitated bursitis, R MTP joints
~Highly unstable R shoulder due to multiple violent dislocations - now sublixates/fully dislocates at the drop of a hat

Those are the ones that sidelined me for a significant period of time... The rest are pretty minor in comparison.

Only one serious: Impact injury to the left rotator cuff and shoulder joint. The single most painful thing I've yet to experience. Until this injury, I had no idea the human body could create pain so exquisite.

And, a bunch of minor stuff to boring to get into.

The most annoying is plantar fascitis: my feet are like terrodactyl claws in the morning and my wife says I hobble around like an old man until they loosen up.

Broken heart...despite appearances, I never completely recovered. The rest of the stuff is regular, run-of-the-mill minor (concussions, broken wrist, broken clavicle, broken fingers, achilles tendonitis, sartorius tear, hamstring tears, both plantaris tendons torn, various dislocations/tears, chainsaw injury to right arm taking about a hundred stitches and resulting in sensory nerve damage, etc.).

Broken jaw, 13 shattered teeth, both arms broken (different occasions), various fingers and toes (one fingernail still grows out in two pieces), dislocated finger (no break), impingement syndrome in both shoulders that required surgery on both, syatic (sp) nerve in my back, three severely mashed discs in lower back, three cracked ribs, partial tear hamstring. I guess that's all.

I started my cycling fanaticism in a grand fashion at the age of five: Flying down my front drive way, which was a long steep hill, on a bad-ass big wheel.

Stopped after getting whacked by a Ford truck. Broke the femur and tibula in two places. Nice way to cap off my ealier start with orthotics and leg braces! Broke arm falling out of tall tree. Broke nose jumping off see-saw, hoping my little friend would fall to the ground hard. Sliced tendons in finger while cleaning a snook. Got mauled by a german shepard. Small town, nurses knew me by name. Then I grew up.

- Torn ACL playing hockey... Here's the kicker... I didn't start tri's until AFTER reconstruction. (I grew up swimming and cycling was part of rehab). Thankfully, I didn't tear much cartlidge or other ligaments (Orthopod said I was lucky). Still try to run mostly on trails though.

- Stress fracture.. ramped up the miles too soon during the recovery. Was coming down too hard on my uninjured leg.

- Torn Quad - Again playing hockey (it's a rough sport folks)

I will say this. Triathlon has been a gift to me. It's prevented me from getting the "beer belly" commonly associated with retired fasttwitch athletes (hockey players, football players, baseball, etc). Furthermore, it's kept me in good shape to prevent me from getting injured the recreational hockey league I now play in.

Ground off skin, Big ,Knee & elbow scars, from my 60s version of BMX bike wrecking. One broken wrist Hit by a car high school......I left a 10" circle 3 " deep, windshield indentation from my head . Had a hard time walking for a week. Surgery on Clavicle, A/C joint repaired pined, ligaments sewed to the bone. Bi-molier ankle fracture ?, which mean both side of the ankle joint fracture after from the ball, those two knuckle points R & left side of one foot , Man that hurt. Damned two wheel devices.

MCL damage that I had avoided surgery on for nearly 20 yrs (through rehab), three broken ribs, tooth chip, several hundred stitches (all from ice hockey).

Whiplash, strained lumbar from two car accidents.

Thoracic outlet syndrome (which mimics carpal tunnel) from hairdressing. Borderline carpal tunnel syndrome, as well. Rotator cuffs are weak and will eventually require surgery. Feet have spread three widths, but only in the front. I still have a B-width heel, which makes next pair of cycling shoes that require custom fitting.

Severe lumbar strain, five square yards of road rash (over a long period of time), nerve damage in left thumb, chipped tailbone, chronic hip flexor tightness, all from bike accidents.

Had my patellar tendon in my right knee scoped in January of 2003, feels like it's ready for another. Maybe I could get a subcription? Also, I have overuse injuries that have lead to tightness in just about every muscle in my upper legs, predominantly on my left side. It manifests itself with hamstring pain, lower back pain, left side only, to the point that in the past, I had to walk with crutches for 2 days because I couldn't bear any weight. It's better, but still there. The imbalance has pulled everything out of whack such that my sacrum and pelvis are in too close of proximity. I believe the term is sacroillial injury, similar to what Joanna Zeiger has suffered from. Gonna try and nip this with some A.R.T. beginning the first of the year. I had a relapse during an Ironman build up this summer, and definitely don't want that again next year. Sucks doing an IM injured. Sucks even more training for one while injured. Oh, and my hip flexors ache continuously:) It's all related.

1. Massive dislocation to right elbow. Ossification in the joint. It won't straighten anymore. Which is good for my highelbow catch on that side. It also tells me when it is going to rain

2. Fractured nose (2X), Ribs (3X) and toes (just one) - left over martial arts nonsense.

3. Achillies tendon tear (2X - matched set)

4. Saddle sores

As of my appointment with the Quack at 9am today....an inguinal hernia WAHEYHEYHEY!!!

Apparently it's massive and I should be in agony...but I'm not lol...but it hasn't stopped the butcher of Birmingham booking me in for a spot of surgery first week in Jan 05.

There will be a post leading on from this asking for advice about training post surgery as I'm currently (or was) training for Lanzarotte 05.

Stu...with the lumpy groin!

Type 1 diabetes since age 24 (now getting ready to turn 50)

Torn meniscus right knee (2 places/1 surgery)

Sesamoiditis left foot (ongoing, but improved after treatment)

Frozen shoulder, bilateral (mostly better after PT but some limit to ROM)

Plantar fasciaitis, both feet w/heel spur in right foot (got injection in heel 5 weeks ago and getting ultrasound treatments on both heels--getting better)

Osteoarthritis in neck (pain comes and goes--not bad right now)

All (except for the knee) seem to be things I will never be totally cured of but have to live with forever.

Mine is thankfully very short, but the current problem has put an end to any triathlon training:

1. Fractured Patella in 1985( Long story)

2. ITB problem in 1995( Came back from a month off too hard)

3. Herniated Disc is currently a permanant pain in the back - pun intended. No running, no xc- skiing and only cycling when the back feels good is what I can do these days.

It's not so bad, as I had 20+ years of high level training and racing reached many of my key goals and had a good run at it.

Working from the top down:

7 Concussions (hockey, skateboarding [2], BMX, soccer, boxing, car accident)

Broken:
nose (3 times)
cheekbone (suckerpunched during a mugging attempt)
collarbone (monkeybars)
arm (both, once each)
hand (right)
fingers (several)
ribs (several)
tibia (does that count as ankle or leg??)
pinky toe (there is NOTHING you can do for that)

Separated / dislocated:
shoulder
fingers (several)

Sprained:
ankle
wrist
thumb
back (L4-L5)

I haven't been hurt during tri / run training, (except for a 1st year / bad shoes stress fracture) but I had so sit out last year due to a calf injury from MTB and a chronic left hamstring from surfing (goofyfoot).

Plus I had surgery to mend a vericosele on one of my boys.

Ok I go with the big stuff first!

Craniosynostosis (Neuro surgery at 3 months old) Just leaves me with a nice 107 stitch scar across my head (If I do go bald I will look like something out of the Adams Family) When I had No.2 cut for Royal Marine training I was still getting some pretty funky stares (I usually just siad it was where my brain was removed after I applied for the Paras!)

C4/5 Fracture in Cervical Spine (Neck compressed in ruck playing rugby) Frayed and impinged nerve cords leading to intermittent paralysis on Left hand side and 70% loss of strength (This is after numerous other rugby injuries, including upwards of 75 stitches, 3xbroken nose until I lost all the bone below half level in my nose, broken tibia, seperated shoulder and two broken fingers (greenstick fractures - lovely) Rugby was a great game but a C-spine injury will end your interest pretty quickly!

Since moving into Multi-sport things are much more in the over-use category (despite broken clavicle in a messy crit pile-up - surprised not to see more of these!) was Pes bursitis on left knee, some ITB issues, Sciatic pain from L3 and a whole heap of rotator cuff "issues" but all-in-all waaay better than rugby days!

Holy sh*t. This thread makes me feel better about my own list:

Surgeries:

Sub-acromial decompression of the right shoulder for severe impingement syndrome. (At ~80%)
Varicocele repair, left side. (Look it up if you want, it's a male thing. Only ~10% discomfort remains.)

Injuries:

Hairline fractures in left wrist and right elbow from bike crash in Central Park. (Both at ~80%)
Multiple bouts of left ITBS.
Single bout of PF. (Turned out to be the new sneakers.)
Badly sprained left ankle that never quite healed well. (At ~80-90%)

Other:

I also have some kind of pain behind my right knee that started pre-IMFL, and persists post-IMFL, despite my being a near sloth. Maybe when I start weight training Jan.1 it'll work itself out. If not, it's off to the ortho for a consult.

OK here we go,

-dislocation of left shoulder requiring surgery, the surgeon used a piece of my clavicle as a bone block to kinda fix it sort of.

-dislocation of the right shoulder requiring surgery, the surgeon used staples and screws to fix this one kinda a little.

-dislocation of the right pinky finger requiring surgery, the surgeon put a little teenie piece of plastic in there and the cool thing was I got to watch it. They used a nerve block for the anasthetic. On a bad note, I didn't know that your could be strangled in the night by your own arm. You can.

-broken nose, no surgery on this one yet, but if you ever meet me your gonna say to yourself "that is one big ugly nose"

-stress fracture left foot, it kept healing and I kept breaking it again. Finally had to take 4 months off running.

-bloodclot in groin, got hit by car, handlebars tried to make me a eunich. Still have scar tissue so I can't squat down without major pain.

-torn trapezius muscle, took 2 months to finally heal. Felt like frankenstein with my head bolted to my 2 bad shoulders.

That's all so far ..................

-am going back to the surgeon for left shoulder on the 20th, have ground the repair into rubble from my pathetic attempts to swim with speed and grace.

Only the most recent. I've been dealing with Atrial Fibrillation for a number of years but the last 12 months it has been coming on more and more frequently. It was even a factor in my last 3 tris of the year and not being too bright I kept going(even won AG/50-54 in one). So I decided to get it fixed. The procedure is to run a catheter up through a vein in your(my) groin, into the right atrium, across to the left atrium, and after extensive electrical testing, they fry a little circle around the entrance of the pulmonary veins with RF at the catheter tip. So 10 days with no exercise and 30 days to full tilt workouts. So far, no funny beats (and they're supposed to occur up to 3 months post ablation). Doing my second (easy) ride this weekend. 2005 should be a good year!

Gosh, I feel like I don't try hard enough. I played Water Polo, have run Marathons, raced in Tris. The only major incident was two years ago at the AFC Half-Marathon in San Diego. At mile 6, I doubled over in big pain. Had to be rushed to the Hospital for an emergency appendectomy. It had burst on the run. Doctor said there was quite a mess inside me to clean up. Pity, too, because, at that point I was on a sub 6:30 pace. Wouldn't have been able to hold it though. Probably would have ended up around 1:35.

Wrists: Right once (140 stitches), Left twice

Hands: All fingers, both thumbs, numerous times

Ribs: 3 times on the right, 2 on the left

Spine: 2 prolapsed discs

Legs: 2 knee surgeries on the right knee

Ankle: Torn achilles, and pretty much destroyed everything else in the Right ankle

Pre triathlon:

Broken bones = ankle, wrist, thumb
Surgery = achilles, mcl on right knee, meniscus on both knees, lower bankart on right shoulder

Since doing tri's (3 years) I've cracked 5 ribs in two incidents, stress fracture in my right foot, twisted my pelvis in a bike wreck, diagnosed with 2 herniated disks, and currently treating a nerve impingement that's effeting my left leg.

At least I know I'm not alone.

Here is an injury I caused from triathlon training:

In 1989 I lived in Canada and was riding my bike on a trainer in the basement. We had a sofa beside the trainer. My two year old daughter was bouncing on the sofa. Anyone with kids knows the instinctive thing to say is "stop bouncing, you are going to hurt youself." Well, I did not say that and kept on cycling. I took my eyes of my daughter for a split second and all of a sudden my pedals lock and the wheel stops. Somehow my daughter bounced off the sofa and managed to get her tiny little leg through the pedals of my rear wheel.. The impact snapped her leg in two. Man, did she cry. As naive parents, we were not sure if the leg was broken and actually waited about 12 hours before we went to the ER. Stupid, stupid, stupid....

I am going to win this one.

Broke every bone in my left pinky, at that time I also broke my left collar bone, C1, C2, right and left scaphoid and right arm. Left from that is a non functional left pinky (no feeling, no mobility) and a right scaphoid with vascular necrosis that is still "broken" and always will be.

Broke right scaphoid two other times.

Left arm and right arm - at the same time

Skull Fracture

C5 and collar bone

put a Dura Ace STI lever THROUGH my right calf in a crash, that got infected and I almost lost my right leg. 6 months in a wheel chair...end of USCF life.

More stitches than I can even count

Lost my front teeth (they were put back in :)

Hit by no less than 6 cars
  • 92 year old man going the wrong way down a one way
  • rich woman (ever hear of English Mark Darts? her husband owns the company Arachnid) - well she hit me and I went through her windshield and landed in her back seat)
  • Hit by drunk guy - in the parking lot of a hospital...broke my bike and burnt the hell out of my leg under his car (I was on the side walk not moving)
  • Hit by woman who was trying to avoid a squirrel
  • Hit by mirror of truck, went off the road and hit a mail box

Broken Left Arm - Fell of the monkey bars

Broken Left Collarbone - Skiing

Broken Right Collarbone - Mountain biking

Dislocated Left Pinky - Basketball

Dislocated Right Pinky - Got "Doored" on my road bike

Hmmm, here's mine:
  • Broken Nose (Soccer)
  • Broken Wrist (Lacrosse)
  • Broken Wrist (Cause I'm an idiot)
  • Broken Ankle (Turns out I can't fly)
  • Broken Rib (Nerf basketball, doorknob, very weird)
  • 8 Fingers and toes, various reasons (No thumb though!!)
  • Separated left shoulder, lost count long ago
  • Concussions (3 that I know of, um remember, what was the question?)
  • 3 Shattered teeth, 9 chin stitches (Passed out while serving mass as an altar boy, was standing, landed chin first on a hardwood floor. Thankfully the double baptism just concluded. Praise the Lord!)
  • More stitches than I can count, feet, hands, head...
  • A handful of surguries, shoulder, appendix, and some other minor ones.

Ohh, I've got to add a favorite. It's minor, but the way it happened makes it good. As a kid I was walking into a Basketball Gym. As I reached for the door to open it, someone from the inside pushed the door open pretty hard. Well, my foot went under the door, but it managed to catch hold of the toenail on my big toe and rip it right off. THAT will wake you up.

Well, since this apparently is a Life List (why do I feel like we're playing out the "scar scene" from Jaws? haha!) Top to bottom:

3 concussions (one when I was like 5 yrs old, fell off the ladder on the high dive)

1 stitch in eye (age 2 - the start of my climbing career)

Knocked out front teeth. Twice. Big ol' scar on chin too from the second time.

Severed neck muscle, nicked the artery. Bike crash (long story short, I rode into a street sign, which tried to decapitate me. Don't ask...) Due to that, my head flopped around, I felt like a human Pez dispenser.

Dislocated shoulder - from above accident

3 broken bones in right hand - Mom thought I was 'exaggerating' as to how much it hurt, so we didn't go to the doctor for a few days.

2 broken right wrists (one in HS gym, see lost teeth, one mtb'ing)

1 broken left wrist - fell 20+ feet Trad lead climbing, hit the deck. Ouch. Reconstructive surgery, I now have a piece of a dead guy in there ("cadaver bone"), since I powdered part of the bone that used to be there.

1 torn tendon in right ring finger - playing Thanksgiving flag football. permanent 15 degree bend in end of finger at last knuckle

1 nice scar in left index finger - this is what happens when an 8yr old uses his Christmas $ to buy a Buck knife for himself.

1 torn left medial meniscus, got it 'scoped last Nov. good to go now

1 torn right medial meniscus - currently in "work-around mode"

1 broken ankle - did you know that with a tight enough ski boot and enough tequila, that you can ski with a broken ankle? Now you know.

Too many sprained ankles and thumbs to count, I've got scars I can't even remember where they came from....

Good Thread:

Shattered all four of my front upper teeth, the front two twice.

Tore my large muscle that sits over the rotator cuff in half (I think sub scapulus sp.) and wrestled on it for a year before needing a massive surgery. They took 8" of tendon out of my right calve to shoestring the muscles back together. Still only 65-70 percent range of motion but they said I'd never be able to play sports again and I can. High school students don't need cortisone!!!

Dis-located multiple fingers.

Torn left rotator cuff that hurts but hasn't required anything more that PT.

The dreaded ITB........both legs.

Pendicitis (sp.)

I think that's about it. Amazing I made it through being a kid, in retrospect.

I just want to preface this by saying that it is great to have your two best friends be doctors. One is a plastic surgeon and the other is a dentist… it sure make the repairs more fun.

Cycling
Torn rotator cuff in both shoulders - this makes swimming enjoyable
Knocked out both front teeth

Boating

Daaaaaaaaaaaamn!!! There are some pretty busted up people in the clan here. Makes me feel much better. Comparitively minor injuries on my end:

6/95 - Broken arm and pinched nerve in my back from about a 15 ft fall while fast roping out of a CH-46. The next guy in the stick that landed on top of me didn't feel too good either.

12/00 - Completely torn right ACL/MCL from soccer. Nice 10 month road to rehab and therapy after that. Used Paterllar tendon graft.

11/01 - Ten months later after long, hard work in physical therapy, I went and ruptured my left ACL/MCL completely in the same exact motion as the right knee IN THE FIRST GAME I PLAYED SINCE THE RIGHT ACL tear. Friends called me "Bad Luck Schlep Rock" after that for a while. But hey, at least my scars are now symmetrical and I no longer run/swim in circles from one leg overpowering the other.

Sprinting has been hard since these knee ligamnet injuries. Anyone else seem to think so?

09/04 - Meniscus repair, right knee.

Stay healthy and uninjured all!!

Regards,

Mark

Broken bones in left forearm (don't know medical term for those bones) Snowboarding: went over huge jump, lost it in the air, came down on arm straight out, trying to "break" impact with hand. Knew they were busted right away, my arm had a very strange angle to it. Surgery with pins and plates on bones now.

And yes, I have actually set off the scanner at the airport, post 9/11

Pituitary tumor (removed - now my nose is messed up from it) that was over-producing hGH (see, I have first hand experience with this PED *g*) as well as the tumor itself putting pressure on my optic nerves. Only found on accident while x-raying sinuses to determine reason for constant sinus infections.

Broken ribs (used to jump horses - way more dangerous than swimming in the ocean).

Shin splints, IT band syndrome, tendonitis (take your pick on which tendon), pulled glute. I think that's it...

Ok. Here is my life time list of major injuries.

1 - Torn Retina and more stitches in my face than the doctor could count. I was 8 and ran through a plate glass door. Luckily the attending surgeon at the hospital was a plastic surgeon. I have no noticable scars from this.

2 - Lost both front teeth in freak skateboarding accident. We used to race what is now called skeleton on our skateboards as kids. I tried to cruise into a driveway at the bottom of the hill and the wheels did not get over the bump.

3 - Torn Miniscus and partially torn ACL. High School Soccer.

4 - The worst grade 2 AC separation my doctor has ever seen. Foreign object in the front wheel at 20mph. Maybe I should post a picture of this. The funny thing is it doesn't affect my swimming but I have a great excuse for not lifting weights.

Wow. Lots of broken bones here. You guys should eat more calcium.. or fall less? Either way, my list is very short.

severe sprained ankle (had pain for 3 months after)

sprained pinkie (still crooked)

a year of plantar facitis

random stiches from falling on my head as a child, ect

swollen knee and nasty road rash from being hit by a car

other incidents that should have caused damage:

slamming all 4 fingers in the car door, and having it lock

falling off a 20 foot cliff in the woods

falling out of various trees

thats about all i can think of tonight. merry christmas to all!

GEEZ - I could build my practice entirely on patching up you guys/gals. It is interesting that I can only remember ONE triathlete that relates an injury from training that I have seen. Reading this thread one would think that training/competing in triathlons is more detrimental to your health than driving a truck in Iraq.

I've only had 1 minor bout of plantar fasciitis, surgery on my left ring finger for tenosynovitis and a few nasty bike crashes (who hasn't) with some permanent road rash scars on the legs.

I'll restrict my list merely to cycling. I own a farm. If I go into that, it gets too long.

A crash in a paceline sent my kneecap squarely into a RR rail, cracking it completely in two. So it received a couple of pins and wires to put it all back together. Six months of excruciating rehab.

Two years ago got hit head on by a teenage driver talking on a cell phone who didn't see me coming down a hill and pulled a left turn directly in front of me. Injuries included a severly broken hip (femoral head was hanging by a thread), broken ankle, severly lacerated shin/calf muscle, fractured pelvis and compression fracture of the spine. I was on the trainer six weeks later. I did a personal best time on a mountainous century ride six months later, finishing in just under 5 hours on a ride with 8,000 feet of elevation gain.

God engineered our bodies with amazing recuperative powers!

I'll add a couple of the more notable ones:

-recurring pneuomothorax...collapsing lung...both sides, finally had the right side "fixed" which amounted to losing about 3/4's of that lung
-stress fracture, right foot
-bad crash at a race, lost several layers across the left hip, shoulder, and chest.
-kinda crushed some cartilage behind the right knee cap from a fall
-just had arthroscopic on the left knee for torn miniscus but the Doc says it cleaned up nice and I can start running again in a few weeks
-that's enough.

Train hard...race well.

Surgeries: scope on knee to buff up meniscus; ganglion cyst removed from wrist, both of those were pre-tri; tumors removed in three separate surgeries, the last one did the trick (you don't want to know details)

Broken bones: Busted nose in 4th grade from catching a baseball hit back through the pitcher's mound with my face; small fx of the tibia from karate; all pre-tri

Concussions: Baseball incident above; crashed bike in college without helmet

injuries: currently recovering from a sore ankle which morphed into plantar fascitis; have had IT band issues (hip) in the past couple of years; some @$$hole hit and ran me in my truck and I had some neck and lower back issues, but they seem to be resolved (knock wood);

Tri related inujuries are actually very few.

Rolled left ankle during a 100k twice during race, once at mile 3 and again at mile 23. The second one was a full roll and almost tore my pernoeal brevis - was out months with that one, no surgery, PT and final got back. Yes, finished the 100k though. I now make sure I keep the feet strong and flexible.

Last year, had lisfranc sprain in a non running injury (of course), not dislocation but took sick amount of time to get back to running. Even with a low impact lisfranc sprain, you have to be careful with this one and have to be patient which was a nightmare. Ended up in boot for 7+ weeks, went from bike, to walking to running again. It sucked.

And the winner that never seems to want to go away is sesamoiditis in my left great toe, mine are bipartite which I knew based on previous x-rays from trail running mishaps. That one, I have not conquered and manage it the best I can, bucket icing, stim, ultrasound, and dry needling. This keeps my miles down and on the bike more than I want. Went the hoka bondi route but I have high arches which as a minimal shoes, causes Achilles issues. No answer on this one yet.

Throw in mcl sprains, hamstrings and normal achilles tendonitis issues that come up, thats been my life running ultras to hiking.

On the whole, I'm OK.

In a high performance "career" in first running then triathlon that started at age 15 and ended at about age 37, I had few injuries that really set me back. I did micro-fracture my left patella (long story) that did require arthroscopic surgery in 1985 to clean up some damage to the back-side of my patella and inside my knee joint. I was warned then that, my left knee may give me problems down the road*.

I had a serious bout of IT Band issues when, I ran in the wrong style of running shoe from one of my shoe sponsors of the time. It was completely my fault. I was down for about 3 months for running, but was able to swim a ton and ride a bit.

In 2000 I had a severe bout of pneumonia. Was off work for 3 weeks (almost a whole week barely moving from a bed), and I was told would leave some permanent scaring on my lungs, would diminish my absolute overall lung capacity, and that I might be susceptible to exercise induced asthma. Have not really noticed the diminished lung capacity. Found out with some reading that the lungs in athletes can super-compensate for this. I have found that certain extreme environmental conditions - heavy air pollution, very high heat and humidity, very cold air, can trigger asthma like symptoms when I'm trying to go hard in these conditions. My GP prescribed inhalers/puffers to me years ago, and told me to use when needed. They contained Chris Froome's favourite - Sanbuterol!

These days my current issues are ( I only ride now with some XC-skiing in the winter):

- *The left knee is a bit wonky. I need to stay on top of strength training, stretching, and rolling out the IT band regularly to keep things in check

- It was confirmed a number of years ago via MRI, that I have a herniated disc (L4-L5) - the classic one and a bulge in the disc above that one. So lower back is wonky to. Not a candidate for surgery yet. For what I do, I can keep it in check by lifestyle choices, core strength and not doing anything really stupid! I'm NOT helping you move! :)

Here goes.

Torn Meniscus both knees.
Torn shoulder labrum both shoulders. Left one has been repaired 3 times.
Right ankle reconstructed 2 yrs ago.
Bulging discs ( work related).
Fai in right hip with labrum fraying.
And the latest insult I fell at work and dislocated my middle finger a few weeks ago. Torn collateral ligament.. think that's it. I will say nothing compares to the pain of pleurisy. I dealt with a plural infusion around my lungs several years ago I don't wish that on anyone.

Just the stuff since I turned 18 that sent me to the hospital:

1980: shattered my right wrist and forearm, had a TWA to replace it. I continued to grow for another 6 years, as a result my right forearm is 3/4" shorter than my left (no, my aerobars are not incorrectly adjusted!)

1992: crashed in a crit and lost nearly half of the skin on my left leg, hospitalized for several weeks and nearly lost it due to infection (still have issues from that today)

1994: hit by a car on a training ride, resulting in chronic back issues

2001-2002: chronic plantar fasciitis that refused to go away despite every treatment short of surgery

2002: broken right ankle

2003: broken left foot (dancer's fracture)

2005: fell off a small cliff, basically destroyed my left leg: ruptured Achilles, O'Donoghue triad (torn ACL, MCL and meniscus), fractured patella, broken ankle, various muscle tears, nerve damage, plus several compressed or ruptured discs (lost 1" in height from that accident). After years of PT, I still have very limited range of motion in my knee and ankle, and cannot sense where my left foot is.

2005-2017: chronic infections in my left leg that often have me hospitalized, latest was October

2015: Black widow bite on left foot. Raced 3 days later, despite the pain had by far my best race result since 2001 (is spider venom a PED?)

2017: Currently recovering from cardiac ablation to correct persistent A-fib

Most of my injuries are from sports.

Fell off the monkeys bars when I was in the first grade and had several stitches in my head.
Concussion at a high school basketball camp at WKU over 40 years ago.
Doing the annual school fitness test in Jr. High I got a bad infection from the person holding my legs down while doing my setups and I got a bad infection that required surgery.
Knee surgery between HS and College (basketball)
SI (sacroiliac) Fusion (twice, the first one didn't take) and I had doctors to tell me I would never run again. I have set all of my PR's since and finished Kona 7 times and will be going back in 2018. This was by far the biggest recovery of any injuries I have ever had.
Foot join surgery (calcaneocuboid joint, injury)
Torn calf muscle
Planar fasciitis
Broken toe two days before Kona and foot swelled like a balloon. Put in a cast and watched the race on the sideline.
Complete hamstring reattachment in 2015 (very painful and thought my race days were over but I qualified for Kona 2018 at Ironman Louisville this year). Again doctors told me that I would never run again except for the doctor I finally picked to do my surgery.
Bone on bone L4/L5 and did stem cell therapy in 2016 and I have been pain free since.
Major knee pain in 2018 after a bike accident, knee therapy, (MRI shows no cartilage and the trauma caused inflammation that just won't go away)
Gall Bladder, C-Section, Eye and hand surgery (not sports related)
Melanoma in my neck and on the back of my leg (this I am sure is from all the exposure to sun from our sport; yes I wear sunscreen).
I have had one small heat stroke and since several heat exhaustions (I live in Dallas and train hard)

This is only the second time I have ever posted and Wow, I feel old after listing all of these and sure I missed a few. I will be at Kona if all goes well in 2018; after being told in 1998 that I would never run again I have accomplished my greatest athletic dreams. I am a strong believer we know our bodies and what we can and can't do. I am slower, older and frustrated at being an aging athlete but I love what I do and want to do it as long as I can. I run less, swim more and ride enough and still can be competitive. I am blessed....

The big one: 2007 hit by truck while running (actually walking across a driveway). Open/compound Tib Fib fracture, three surgeries, 16 weeks non weight bearing, a full year of rehab + bursitis in shoulder from trying to manage a 20,000 sq ft restaurant and event facility on crutches... Ortho Doc: "When I saw your leg I didn't know what to do with it". (Answer 16 screws and 2 plates).

Busted ribs (fell during duathlon in Tuscon) which apparently caused a blood clot in kidney during a 50 mile MTB race a few weeks later. Overnight in hospital pumped full of fluid until it busted out.
Sprained ankle - numerous
Hamstring- strain/tear numerous times
Disc #4 finally resolved with 2 nerve root injections,
One knee surgery
variety of overuse injuries to knees, ankles, feet
do black toenails from hilly trail 50K count? Lost a few, what's left are grotesque looking.
Variety of smashed bruised knees from trail running ("if there's no blood it wasn't a good race").
That's the first 40 years...

don't just do something..... sit there

ROFL! Love this topic.

"Knee injury" which turned out to be IT band, which turned out to be weak glutes. The usual. Since corrected.

Real knee injury (torn meniscus) because I switched bike shoe brands and didn't get a bike re-fit. Vastly different knee tracking. Easily detectable/preventable with what I know today, but back then I was a dumbass.

Plantar fasciitis lasting 6 months!

Mild Achilles niggling that didn't stop me from running but did reduce my weekly mileage by half for an entire season.

Bike crash. Clavicle and bunch of ribs.

Plantar fasciitis in the other foot. This one lasted only a couple of months.

Mild sports hernia going on for 6 years. No indication on ultrasound. It just hurts on and off. It hurts right now. Does not stop me from doing anything, but is annoying as hell.

Severe Achilles that left me limping while walking and unable to run for a month, and then run only 20-30 minutes at a time. Took 3 months to go away.

And the current injuries:

Swollen or inflamed or persistent arthritis or infected (???) big toe joint. No official diagnosis. Medical professionals don't know what this is.

Soft tissue soreness on that same foot, just behind the toes, across the entire foot from ball of foot to little toe. Flares up on long runs, especially if it's cold out and my feet are cold. Got to see someone for this pretty soon.

So far this a pretty interesting thread..here's my input.

>Summer 1985 (last yr in college) diagnosed with Type 1, insulin dependent diabetes. Did the syringe/pen/pump routine for 20 years. Got in triathlons in the early 90's.

>1993, diagnosed with brachial plexus in the right back/shoulder/arm. Initially the Docs thought it was a herniated disc, but after a few days of no improvement, they re-examined & discovered it was brac plex.

>1998 was inaccurately diagnosed with macular degeneration. Laser surgery was to correct it. Re-diagnosed and it wasn't mac deg. Currently legally blind in my right eye.

>2005, pancreas only transplant...no longer diabetic. I have two pancreas' in my gut now. So far the "new" one is working well. Haven't had an insulin shot in +12 years.

>Summer 2017, bad bike crash. Broken clavicle, twisted radius bone, concussion and split my humerus. 11 screws and a plate in the left shoulder. They had to cut thru my rotator cuff to get the plate in there. Funny thing is that it doesn't hurt when I swim, only when I run.

Holy fuck. I don't see how the ball joint of your humerous is still structurally sound with all those screws!

also mostly OK, still moving so it can't be too bad.

interesting on the pneumonia, I had the same thing in 2005-6 winter, bad pneumonia followed by pleurisy. Nobody told me about the consequences but all of that happened - lung capacity down, EIA started in summer 2006, pulmonary shunt of some kind. The exercise induced asthma was under control with albuterol aka salbutamol until this year, when it stopped working. Now have plain old asthma as well and don't even need to exercise to get it. The EIA is incapacitating these days, both run and swim, keeps me at what used to be easy aerobic pace.

herniated L5-s1 disk since early 2000s at least, core exercises keep it at a dull ache most of the time.

neuromas in both feet, mostly dormant now, controlled with inserts when necessary.

insertional achilles tendinitis L foot since 2009 or so, mostly controlled with eccentric heel drops.

sciatica/piriformis since 2005, flared up this year. In desperation tried the Sacro Wedgy which has actually worked, not clear if it was that or the daily foam rolling though.

repeatedly torn R calf muscle. The latest occurrence I suspect was a side effect of the sciatica flare-up, 3 months off running and daily foam rolling seems to have placated it for the moment.

L shoulder impingement controlled with regular scapular stabilizer exercises etc

broken ribs 2015

vitreous detachments in both eyes since 2013 unresolved, without glasses I'm legally blind..

hemicrania continua, controlled with indomethacin but that has side effects so live with it most days

there are a lot more traumatic injuries and surgeries in this thread than I expected, even given bike crashes.
Also way fewer overuse, than expected of endurance athletes..

"It is a good feeling for old men who have begun to fear failure, any sort of failure, to set a schedule for exercise and stick to it. If an aging man can run a distance of three miles, for instance, he knows that whatever his other failures may be, he is not completely wasted away." Romain Gary, SI interview

well right now i've got a sore write becuase of a collision during my hockey game last week. direct impact and i just wanted to make sure my hands/stick were down to not hurt anyone or get called for a penalty. braced myself, just got my wrist wrenched up. will see how it feels when i swim later.

but i've had my fair share of things in the past.

concussions (HS Football, screwing around wiht friends)
broken ribs (hockey)
colorectal cancer, which is now hopefully a thing of the past but it cost me part of my colon and now have to live with a colostomy. factor that into your triathlon training and racing prep!!!
playing baseball always had a season where i took a ground ball in the nuts. and yes i wore a cup
lost a tooth to hockey - croscheck to the face. guy paid for it on the next faceoff :)

I might be a little light compared to the some of the horror stories here! It's an interesting exercise to inventory all the injuries of the years. Mine in rough chronological order:

Pulled a knife off the counter when I was 3, it stuck in the back of my hand and I still have the scar (I'm 51 now)...this would be the first of many, many cuts
My mom closed my left index finger in a door...still have trigger finger
Lit a whole matchbook at once and burned 3 fingers
Dove into the shallow end of a concrete pool when I was 6 (at the direction of an older cousin) and got a concussion
Sliced open the back of my left hand while carving a Pinewood Derby car
Stepped on a nail, went all the way through my foot and out top of my shoe
Fell out of a tree in the front yard onto the side walk, concussion number 2
Fell through the ice playing hockey and scraped about 8 inches of flesh off my right shin
Skiing, crashed into a fence, concussion number 3
Running high hurdles during HS, I tripped, stuck my lead foot between the hurdle slats and slid...on the cinder track. Think road rash but with lots of extra gravel bits stuck in your skin
Crashed on my bike and slid on pavement, more road rash
Hit my head on a beam during work, concussion number 4
Hyper extended my right knee in and backwards (a friend crashed into me while playing volleyball). Maybe nothing torn (not sure because the Navy doc didn't even bother with an Xray) but still ends up swelling so big that Navy bell bottoms barely fit over it
Crashed on my mountain bike, ass over tea kettle style, the bar end hit my calf hard enough I had a bruise from my heel to my ass. I know the rules said no bruises but this required 8 weeks of PT
Broken middle finger tip, caused by elliptical machine while repairing it. I have been really lucky...this is my only broken bone

I will probably mess up the bone names but lets see,

broken right collarbone/clavicle
broken left collarbone/clavicle
broken left scaphoid/wrist, screw put in place but didnt quite do the trick
broken right tibia with full length rod put in just below the knee cap
mildly fractured face bone (no idea the name) ended up with 7 staples and 32 stitches down my forehead and face
broken right radius with a plate and screws
broken pelvis (split in 2 right down the middle) plates screws etc
and I think i broke my pinky at some point because it doesnt go straight anymore

So a grand total of like 18-20 pieces of metal I think, all from different incidents mostly
probably some concussions, stitches and other stuff but they don't really register on the scale anymore!

*Sigh* I'm still in denial about some of this, but:

41 years old

-Left humerus (upper arm bone) and elbow shattered in 1990. Pins + plates + screws, can't fully extend it and that triceps has about 1/2 the strength of the right triceps.

-Right rotator cuff tear surgically repaired in 2009 with distal clavicle excision and acromioplasty. It's now the 'good shoulder' (ugh)

-Left rotator cuff tear identical to what I had on the right now. I need surgery some time this year but want to complete my first full IM first. Swimming makes me really sore.

-C3-C4 to C6-C7 are bulging, L4-L5 and L5-S1 are bulging, and I have a ruptured disc at T10-T11 (Schmorls Node at T10 superior)

-Spinal arthritis from upper cervical to lower lumber. This is what infuriates and bothers me most, and causes me to squirm and self-adjust all day long, and it uncomfortably tightens a lot of my back and neck muscles all the time.

-Inguinal hernia (sports hernia) on right side, only flares occasionally

-A whole bunch of scars all over. I was a normal daredevil boy and still am at 41 years old :-)

In the last 12 months.

Started off with plantar fasciitis

Then I dislocated both shoulders.

Then I was in a pretty bad car crash as someone hit me from behind whilst I was stationary. Caused bad ligament issues through my back and neck.

Then I broke my Tibia on the top face inside my knee. I didn't walk for 5 months and have managed a one mile run as my furthest so far. I have a fairly huge dent in the bone now so fingers crossed it heals okay.

Here is hoping 2018 is a bit better as otherwise I will have to start renting a room in the hospital

I'll probably forget some...
  • Broken leg when I got run over by a station wagon when I was a kid.
  • Broken hand from punching my brother.
  • Ran full speed into a soccer goal I didn't see because I was looking other way. Knocked me out for a bit.
  • Hit so hard in football, got knocked out. Woke up with everybody over me like a huddle.
  • Tore something in right knee that had me out for a few months in 10th grade.
  • Major concussion from "free-form boxing" with two friends in 11th grade. Three guys, no ref, no rules. :)
  • Torn rotator cuff from swimming in 12th grade.
  • Separated shoulder from hazing incident in ROTC.
  • Shit-ton of random bike wrecks that have done cumulative damage. A couple bad enough I wouldn't be here if I hadn't worn a helmet.
  • Dog bite while running.
  • Torn labrum in right shoulder from throwing baby son up in the air a lot. (totally worth it.)
  • Twice broken or separated ribs from surfing and trail running.
  • Exploded elbow joint and broken left forearm from falling while running at night.
  • Gout in both wrists from swimming across Lake Tahoe with a wetsuit with sleeves too tight at the forearm. Had crystals in the joints that crunched when you moved the wrists for several months.
  • Rhabdo halfway through a ultramarathon.
  • Epic plantar fasciitis training for an ultraman.
  • Broken toes from plantar fasciitis pulling so hard on toes, it broke them on push-off during a run.
  • Nerve damage on left side that seems to be cumulatively gaining on me over the years. Like a very, very slow progressing palsy. Toes and left pinky get numb and painful very easily. Latest is hearing in left ear showing signs of damage/wearing out. Also overall loss of muscle tone and strength on left side of body compared to right.
  • Piriformis syndrome on left side. Could be part of that neuropathy stuff.

I forgot one: a loose trailer hitch with ball on it fell out of wife's hatchback over a year ago right onto my right pinky toe and smashed the phlange bones. It's still a non-union and crunches when I bend it, but being that it's the little toe it's not that big of a deal.

I had an ACL reconstruction from pre triathlon days fail during a build up for an Ironman. I am pretty sure it failed with about 2 weeks to go and my girlfriend(now wife) just held me together. It wasn't completely useless, just most of the way useless. Turns out the ACL was basically put in the wrong spot during the first surgery in my tibia. So I found a new doctor(who basically came up with the way ACLs are currently done) who took out the old ACL, did a bone graft, waited 4 months and then got a new ACL. At some point in my life, it turns out I also tore 3 other ligaments in my knee which this dr. fixed. So he rebuilt my ACL, LCL, popliteal and popliteus Ligaments. My ACL was rebuilt with part of my quad tendon, my first ACL reconstruction was done with my patellar :( (Never go with the patellar, the quad tendon was 100% easier) and the outside of my knee was reconstructed with a cadaver Achilles tendon. There was also some meniscus repair.

Also, I fractured a vertebrae in a bike crash on the savageman course, but the knee thing really put that one into perspective

Forgot two: Broke my right foot pushing a double porta-potty on wheels to a loading dock while working construction. It was super heavy and snapped my metatarsal when it rolled over my foot when my brother kept pushing it. If I got my foot casted, I would lose my job that I was working to save up money for college. So I just limped around on it for another couple of months. Now it'll snap and rebreak if I land on it wrong while running tons of mileage. But it actually doesn't interfere with much otherwise.

I was in a car wreck that knocked me so silly I thought my social security number was my phone number and my mom's name was my apartment's address. I had a final the next day in "Logic", which is a Philosophy class and I would no way in Hell pass. I asked the professor if I could "take an Incomplete" and he said sure, just take the final by the end of next semester. This was actually good luck because I was failing the class and the extra time allowed me to get some tutoring and I actually aced the final.

I was just relaying injuries to my fitter and thought I sounded pretty damaged, until I read some of this thread.

- Pretty young, <5 yo, fell out of bed, landed on a vacuum cleaner, broke left clavical.
5-6 yo, playing in a bubble bath with non-bath toys, I sat on one, cutting my insides somewhere. I bled intermittantly for a week.
- 9 yo, biking with my friend on the back of my banana seat, rear wheel slipped out when I hit a chunk of displaced pothole asphalt, broke left wrist (friend bounced off her head and said she was fine).
- 13 yo, bunions started hurting a bunch when I took up cheerleading. Held out and eventually got those surgically corrected at 25 and 37 yo.
- 13-14 yo, lost balance while running across the yard, thought I'd roll out of it like football players do, broke left clavical again.
- high school-present, played field hockey. Been drilled with line drives more times than can easily recount. The one to my hand (19 yo) turned me from a competent right-handed college note taker to a incomprehensible left-handed scrawler for a week. 23 yo, over ran a ball I was trying to play at our attacking goal end of the field, leaned weirdly to play it, twisted my right knee pretty badly. That took months to heal. 40 yo, took a ball to the face playing indoor; gave up indoor field hockey after that.
- 18 yo, passenger in a car accident in a vehicle with no seatbelts (El Camino, fully loaded bed), slammed knee into pointy stereo corner and left an impressive divet in the dashboard with my forehead. Reportedly, I was knocked out and the driver thought I might be dead. Luckily, no.
- 25 to 43 yo, played ice hockey. Though technically non-check, that's not how it always played out. Learning to play as an adult, as a small female, and colliding with much bigger / heavier players (eg men), builds character I guess. 27 yo, had a teammate land on me, with me twisting my right knee again. It settled down after a few months. Have been hit by slapshots that have left impressive bruising; one former women's national team member broke my stick, cracked my shin guard and bruised the heck out of my shin with her shot. The worst ice hockey injury might still bug me today - I was going to use the boards, intentionally hip check them, to skate wide around the person near the point. But my newby teammate opened the bench door just then (some people aren't comfortable shifting over the boards, this time to my detriment) and I came to an abrupt stop as my right pelvis hit the open end of the boards; that one really sucked.
- 33 yo, stress fracture to shin training for my first marathon.
- 43-ish, snowmobiling accident, I was thrown from my sled and slid head first (wearing motorcycling helmet) into a parked sled. But by the grace of what-ever you believe in, I sustained no injury. Became very risk adverse for the rest of that vacation.
- 45 yo, hip surgery for labrum tear, bone shaving. 13.5 mo PO, still trying to find pelvic balance.

To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive.

37 year old female

3yo: Fell down a flight of cement steps from garage to basement, trying to lean over to grab a folding measuring stick. Stitches and probably irreversible "dropped on head as child" damage
11yo-25yo: Field Hockey. Injuries accumulated include-
spraining my left ankle almost every season from middle school through junior year of college, culminating in ligament reconstruction surgery. Ortho said after surgery that three inches of flimsy scar tissue held my ligament intact and prevented it from rolling up like a shutter.
Massive knee hematomae on both legs, two weeks apart, due to opponents getting slap-happy with their sticks
Line drive to back of my leg, separated muscle fibers in my hamstring
Line drive to my face, split my lip straight up my philtrum. I was the walking PSA for "mouthguards are your friends"
Shoved into a goalcage, hit my head on the backboard, concussion with residual effects that lasted for six months
Rotator cuff cartilage depletion, my shoulder grinds and clicks every damn time I try to rotate it. Makes swimming fun.
14yo: Concussion sustained playing lacrosse, stick check to the head. Father made me quit and join the golf team instead
18yo: Fractured right wrist swordfighting in dorm hallway
19yo: Fell down ONE STAIR. Broke left ankle.
20yo: Broomball incident, fractured lift wrist falling to ice
25yo: Herniated disc between C3 and C4. Resolved after 4 months of PT without requiring surgery.
27yo: Cycling accident, truck turned left out of parking lot and didn't see me, clipped me, and kept going. The ground stopped me 25ft from my bike, when I bounced off the road on my head. Concussion, sprained neck, and still scarred from road rash
28yo: Gallbladder decided to quit. 4 months of walking around gray and sick as a dog, cholecystectomy
29yo: Fell down ONE STAIR. AGAIN. Broke left ankle. AGAIN.
30yo: ITB syndrome, resolved after 6 months of PT.
36yo: Sprained ligament in right foot during marathon. Resolved with rest.
36/37yo: Primary ovarian failure/premature menopause. Doctor sidelined me from intense training until hormone therapy balances things out internally and infertility issue is discussed with care team.
