Anyone had experience with salomon trail running shoes?

Hi all-

I've read good things about the Salomon women's trail running shoes- specifically the XT Whisperer, XT Wings, XA Comp or the SpeedComp. Anyone have any experience with any of these?

I am looking for a neutral, lightweight shoe with some tread. I've run in the Mizuno Ascend 3s for the past three years, which I was very happy with, but the model is getting an upgrade (adding another wave support I believe) for 2010, which feels too "bulky" (the best way I can describe it). I need something that can get me through 30-50ks, river crossings, wet, muddy and rocky terrain. However, I also want something performance-oriented with neutral support; a flexible, relatively lightweight shoe. Does something like that exist!?

As far as using regular road running shoes, I do use these in the summer, when the trails dry out a bit, but with the slippery mud and wet rocks- I like a bit more tread for the winter!

Thanks!

I have some Salomons that are a few years old. Really well made. GREAT traction, basically bombproof and pretty light compared to similar shoes that I looked at. I generally prefer wearing XC shoes for trails but when it's wet and slippery or with a pack, I've been very happy with the Salomons.

Have you also looked at the Innov-8 stuff?

Totally drool worthy IMHO. I think Rappstar recently posted a review of some that he picked up.

I wear Vasque trail runners for the snow and slick conditions- they have great tread, and I wear the Asics Gel Trabuco's for fair weather trail running. Both have been great for me.

I have several pairs of trail shoes from various manufacturers including Nike, Salomon, Brooks, and Inov-8. Based on what you said you are looking for (neutral, high performance, light weight), I would highly recommend looking into Inov-8s. The Inov-8s are amazing on the trail. They have little to no support or cushioning (think the whole barefoot run thing) but provide great traction and foot protection. Since they don't have much cushioning, you can really get a feel for the terrain and they dry super fast. I have run several trail marathons and one 50k in them with no issues (except my calves get a bit sorer than when I run in my usual light stability shoe). They make several different kinds (the numbers are the weight of the shoe) so if you can't decide what to buy from their online site, give them a call. Their customer service staff is great and will make a recommendation based on the types of terrain you are running. Alot of my ultra friends have switched completely to Inov-8 for trail and road running.

In terms of the Salomons, I own the XT wings and XA Comp (i think but it could be the Speed comp), I would think you would find the Salomon's a bit bulky cause I find them to be like tanks compared to my normal road shoes and in the Inov-8s. I find myself barely even wanting to wear them for trail running these days. I have a brand new pair that I won in a Adventure Race raffle that I have worn like 3 times.

Hope this helps!

That was extremely helpful, thank you! You pinpointed exactly what I am looking for, in better words that I described it!

The fast-drying is an added bonus. No one likes sloshbuckets after a river crossing.

The last trail marathon I did had something like 21+ river/stream crossings with a couple of miles where you had 5-7 within the mile. My feet (and the innov-8s) would almost be dry before I hit the next crossing, it was great. Especially since we had temps in the 20-30s.

Try inov8's. They make some very light trail shoes. Great traction. low profile and very light. I've run on wet rock with people in Salomons and judging by how much they slide around these are much better.
I run in the roclite 295 and have raced a few 50k and 50 milers in it.. The talon212 is super light and a good 50k race shoe. I have two friends who won 50k trail races in the talon 212 last season.
The whole roclite series has a a good traction sole. I have run in Mizunos and Brooks before and was impressed on how grippy the inov8 was on wet trails and how low profile, stable and flexible they are.
The number on the inov8 shoe is the weight in grams of a mens 9 so the Talon 212 is 7.5 oz!

What I love about the Avia Stoltz, is that they are super light, grippy and extremely comfortable. They breath/dry very well.
