Bronchitis....
I got diagnosed with bronchitis yesterday. I've already missed all of my runs this week b/c my coughing has been so bad.

I also got diagnosed with asthma (which I had badly as a kid, and has been dormant since), he said it comes back again when I get bad respiratory inflections. I have 2 inhalers, ventolin and flovent, and they are helping already.

He told me I couldn't run for 2 weeks, though I successfully talked him down to 1 week and see how I'm doing.

But do you think it's okay to ride the trainer, lightly? I'm not sure my lungs/throat could quite take it yet but in a day or two I was thinking maybe to do so.

The way I see it you likely have two options. Take a week+ off, fully recover, and get back to training at full steam or try to get back to training - even light cycling - before you've fully recovered and, at best, feel like crap and have the illness linger on for longer then necessary and, at worst, potentially turn into something worse down the road.

Seriously a week or two off isn't going to undermine all your training.

2+ on this. You get better much faster if you let your body heal. Take a break and get well. If you keep pushing it you'll just prolong your illness.

Take the time off. If you don't let your body heal, you won't get better and you will stretch your illness out longer. I had bronchitis 2x in 2008 and it lasted a few weeks. Trying to exercise too early was a part of why it lasted so long.

You guys are all logical!

I'm starting to feel better, other than the cough/breathing deeply, so I'm starting to get a bit antsy/bored. My legs are restless.

Though I just read what I wrote about 'other than breathing deeply'....yeah. I'm the least patient person ever, but I will have to be.

Please listen to the doc ...maybe start trying out the trainer in a week, but keep away from running until you are good to go. As a freshman in college, I screwed myself up for about 5 months by not resting and repeatedly going way too hard as soon I felt a little better. It went something like this: tolerable bronchitis, near recovery, 1/2 IM, kind of bad bronchitis, got a little better, 1/2 IM, sick as all hell. I spent the next four to five months using an inhaler (never had respiratory issues before) and coughing up loads of crap, including blood.

Granted, you are asking about going for a jog and not trying to race, but that one down week may save you a lot of lost time and frustration in the future.

Feel better :-)

You guys are right. Boo.

Thanks though.

Leloo, I'll be honest, the asthma dx kind of freaked me out - I thought I had a juvenile kind of asthma I'd outgrown (and I definitely had it, had a couple of trips to oxygen tents), other than one incident in grade 9 x-country. So to be told you never actually outgrow asthma but that your body learns to cope instead, but that I still had 'active' asthma with respiratory infections, freaked me out, b/c I thought it had been a dead issue since I was about 4 or 5 years old. I mentioned how I often have trouble with coughs and they hang around and my dr. said 'that's the asthma'. Sheesh.

I don't know how bad my bronchitis is, I don't think it's terrible. He said it wasn't pneumonia yet and just gave me the 2 inhalers - flovent I use for the next 3 weeks, regardless, and then ventolin as needed, but I can take it more often than the flovent.

I see him next week and we discuss the running again then....he wants me to start out (and he's a runner, too) doing 1 mile runs!!!!! I was like, 'Seriously? A MILE?' That's like the fun run I do with my dysplastic and arthritic dog, not a proper run. Luckily I'm a slow runner at the best of times though. ;) I'll just go out with my Husky mix dog, he runs slow even for me, so he'll keep me safe, exertion-wise. But I will wait.

Hint: Getting 2 inhalers for bronchitis isn't great. It's good that it's not pneumonia, but it's not good to be given TWO inhalers. Take that into consideration combined with the asthma showing back up, you could be much better off.

I get bronchitis every year. EVERY YEAR, at least once. Almost all the way through college it was 2x yr - once in the early winter and once in the late winter. Quit being an "athlete" and it got much better. I wasn't trying to push through it and rush recovery. Since I started tri after college - I'm down to once a year (combine the stress of the insurance industry in 4Q, colder temperatures and still trying to train = rundown and insta-sick) and it's usually a doozie.

If you MUST do something between now and then, go for walks. When you start back, consider light trainer rides and indoor stuff (cold/wet/changing fall air = danger) for a bit. Your body will tell you when you push too hard. First run you'll wind up with a hack afterwards...just a dry, constant PITA cough that hurts, bad. Then you'll feel like hell the next day. Then you'll be back to square one.

Patience is super hard this time of year - it's the greatest run weather. But you'll be much better off if you just take it easy and let your body do it's thing for longer than you think you need.....really. Don't push it, you're on TWO inhalers (that are fairly serious medicines in and of themselves), remember? It's not pneumonia now, but it VERY easily can be.

Not to be pushy, just because I've been there. I know exactly how you feel and how frustrating it is. Hang in there....use the logic, repeat after us.....

I was actually just daydreaming about riding the trainer and came back on here :)

Well, shoot about the 2 inhalers. Good to know though, thank you!

This would suck every year. Boo!

I have just been doing short walks with the dogs, I will start trying to do further walks - but nice and slow - this weekend and see how that goes.

:)

Well, I probably fainted from not eating drinking enough - blood pressure normal, heart rate spikes when I stand. Also, possible pneumonia, there was some 'fuzzy' stuff on my chest x-ray. Sigh.

Well, I am allowed to starting workouts again in a couple of days (YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) but I'm supposed to stay inside for another few days at least in case I faint again.

My appetite still isn't normal, though it's coming back. Since I need to lose weight I am trying to be careful about not regaining too much of an appetite, but enough that I'm not going around fainting either, especially once I start workouts again.

I suffer from both ailments frequently in the winter and I exercise at a very low intensity under the "cough threshold". 30 minute super light spin on the trainer just to get the blood flowing, sometimes it just feels good to move a bit. Forget swimming and running until you are out of the woods and feeling better.

Thanks! I'm doing something similar today - 25 min mid-pace on the trainer, I'm taking a 5 minute break for water and to make sure I'm okay (I feel fine) and then I will hop back on.

I'm doing so good actually, I forgot my inhalers this morning!

Do you know if a chest pain, on the left side, is normal? It's just an inch or two over from my cleavage. It's a sharp pain, I don't THINK it is a pulled muscle b/c breathing deeply doesn't bother it, but lying on my side can, and I'm at work now upright and it's bothering me.

I see my doctor tomorrow but this is turning me paranoid. I think I'll skip my workout tonight....

Always good to check with the doc. If you are coughing a lot, you may have strained and intercostal muscle, hard to say! Feel better!

It's a pulled ligament. So I feel a bit silly! Still, glad that's all it is. And I'm so cough-free now I'm allowed off the inhalers - whoo!
