"The Womens" 2008 Goals Thread
In honor of Kittycat's thread on being lost and realizing that we all get lost from time to time, we are starting a weekly group to help motivate all of us to stick to our goals for 2008. We will have a weekly check-in on Mondays to talk about how we do each week. Everyone on this thread will have different goals, but the one thing we all have in common is working hard to attain those goals. Whether you're simply trying to get out to run a couple of times a week or you're trying to qualify for Kona, write your goals down and check in with us each week to stay on track.

I suggest you number your goals in order of priority. Make sure they're specific (for example, don't say you want to lose weight, say you want to lose 10 lbs by July 31st).

To start things off, here are my goals for 2008 (revised 7/21/08):

1. Run a minimum of 5 times a week, every week.

2. Break 4 hrs in a fall marathon. I really want to BQ (need a 3:50), but I don't think I can get there this year. I want to get as close as possible and I definitely thinking breaking 4 hrs is do-able.
No marathon for me this year. Instead I want to break 1:53 in a half marathon. This will be a good challenge for me. Still going long (love to run long), but short enough that I can concentrate on getting faster and not just going longer.

3. Lose 20 lbs by September 30, 2008.

4. Survive American Zofingen.
Now that I won't be slogging out the run miles, I want to do more than just survive AmZof. My training plan will now consist of more biking than I originally planned. Getting through the bike in reasonable condition will be the key to this race, so I've got to get some good legs on the bike before October.

Ok I'll go:

The thrust of my goals is to get back in shape, feeling strong and looking good after baby. So to that end, I want to:

1) Do 6 workouts/week. At least 30 minutes each, two in each discipline. (This is a minimum, if for example I find that I can run more with baby in stroller as he gets older, well, I'm up for that, too)

2) Lose 15 pounds by September 1

3) Starting on Saturday, May 10, one sprint tri each month, May - August, culminating with an olympic distance on September 1

I have limited time and desire to train, I want to be home more with the family, but I have found that being in shape and working out are important to me, both mentally and physically, since I haven't been doing much lately. My work/home schedule is evening out and I should definitely have time for this now. I look forward to feeling at least like I am somewhat back on my game by the time September 1 rolls around.

Thanks for starting this, Dawn!

Sounds like a great idea! And a good way to make me more accountable, which I could use right now!

1) Do the Ottawa Half Marathon (May 25) in 1:55

2) Be top 10 in my AG at the Peterborough Tri.

3) Lose 10 pounds by July 6 - I've lost 18 so far this year, which is great but have more to lose!
3B) Cut out junk food and diet soda - allow one small treat/week and that's IT.

4) Lose 10 more pounds by Sept 14.

5) Race my hardest at the Muskoka 70.3 and be proud of my effort.

6) Have FUN while training and enjoy even the sucky workouts!

In regards to 3B, I had hoped to already have a week or so under my belt of this but I lack willpower so I'm going to start as of right now. No treats or pop till NEXT TUESDAY and by then, I hope to not have the overwhelming craving for them and not have it at all :)

Looking forward to checking in and seeing how everyone else does.

I was just having a discussion via email with one of my bike racing teammates and I said I'm not really sure what my goals are, aside from doing well on the track at the state and national championships.

#1 Goal: Improve body composition--decrease % fat. Number on scale not as important as %BF.

For May:
Run a minumum of 20 minutes every day.

On the track by September:
Upgrade to Cat. 3 on track.

For individual races--
* flying 200m: sub-13.5 (seconds)
* 500m: sub-43 (seconds)
* 2K sub-2:55

Bike racing:
Earn 1 point by the end of the season!

Tri:
Have to think about it for KS70.3 and Vineman 70.3

Short term:

1. Get on the damn treadmill tonight and do my speedwork and get it done in time to watch American Idol from the couch.
2. At least 3500y in the pool Wednesday
3. At least 3000y in the pool Thursday
4. Successful camp next week. All workouts with enthusiasm and get my nutrition right for the IM course ride on Wed.

EDIT: No afternoon cookies!

I have some big medium term goals over the next 45 days:

1. Hit every workout on my training schedule from my coach
2. Drop 5 lbs by June 22
3. Stay injury free by icing my knee and taking my anti-inflammatories
4. Set a PR at the Boise Half - doesn't have to be a lot
5. Set a PR at IM CdA - Sub 15 (but I won't say "or die trying", seems to be cursed)

Longer term:

1. Get my runner succesfully across the finish line at Badwater
2. Drop an additional 5 lbs by August 15th
3. Take care of any knee surgeries if necessary and hope not
4. If no surgery then a 50 miler late fall
5. Maybe sign up for IMMoo but only if my BFFs do! No more IM training alone!

Can you tell I'm goal oriented? Far too easy for me to drift and get fat :-)

My goals for 2008:

1. Come out of the water alive in my first Olympic Distance and be happy with my accomplishment instead of comparing myself to friends who were collegiate swimmers. Cap Tex, Austin, Tx, May 25

2. Complete and enjoy Squamish Triathlon in Canada. July 13th I live in a pancake flat area and the mountains will be a challenge.

3. Complete first half iron @ Timberman. August

4. Run a 50 mile trail race in January or under 4 hour marathon in Houston. (Either will make me happy.)

5. Quit three dessert a day sugar addition.

6. Appreciate my friends/training partners, and coach every day. They are the best!!

Writing them is further commitment. Great idea.

Hmm

1) bike 3-4 times a week; swim 3-4 times a week and get to 15,000-20,000 yds a week; run 5-6 times a week including brick

2) Improve on the bike; be able to hold 19-20 mph on 1/2 im and 17-19 on IM (this is of course incredibly huge, but hey, AIM HIGH!)

3) have a good marathon, I just can't seem to put one together

4) do not gain weight next fall after September IM

5) there are some fantastic lady athletes I compete against. I consider them to be the cream of the crop locally. Trying not to sound like a you know what: beat one of them, just once!

Races:

5/31 Rock-n-Roll Man 1/2 IM
6/14 BB
7/13 Chattanooga
August- still up in the air
9/20 Redman Full IM

Okay, these goals are easy for me to put out there.

1. Take at least 10 days (2 weekends and the weekdays in between) off from anything triathlon after Honu. Surf, kayak, scuba dive and hike instead. I didn't do this after IMAZ and really wish I would have.
2. Weigh 125-130 on Oct 11. I have no idea what I weigh now since I skipped my last 2 Monday weigh ins, but 130 is my goal weight for Kona.
3. Make it to the start line injury free.
- Yoga once a week starting in June
- Stretching at least 2 x a week starting NOW
- Foam roller/trigger point daily starting NOW

This one, not so easy (I don't usually tell anyone my race goals until I know I can reach them, and I know setting time goals isn't the best thing to do, but it will keep me focused during training).

4. Under 11 hours in Kona. That means similar times to IMAZ, which means I need to get better/faster because the course is harder.

My goals for 2008:

1. Listen to my body as I recover from December 07 Femoral Neck Stress Fracture.

2. Strength training and yoga at least 1/week each to prevent new injuries/re-injury.

3. First Half Ironman- Pumpkinman in September

4. First marathon- NYC in November.

5. Not worry about times for above two goal races for this season- keep focus on staying HEALTHY and INJURY free so I can set myself up for a strong 2009 season!

I have some sport goals and some non-sport goals, but I'll throw both categories out there! I think this is a great idea -- the first step to reaching your goals is writing them down!

1. TODAY, start writing again -- 30 minutes every day, and legal writing doesn't count!

2. Buy fresh flowers every week. They make me smile, so why shouldn't I have them?

3. By July 1, start violin lessons again. I played when I was young, then switched to cello, but I'd like to give the violin another shot -- my uncle keeps asking me when I'm going to play Orange Blossom Special for him!

4. Race my first sprint in at least 3 years on June 1. Accept my performance as a baseline -- nowhere to go but up!

5. Break 25 minutes in a 5K by September 1.

6. More generally, accept that workouts can (and will be) missed, blown off, completely forgotten, and no one will think less of me.

And that's enough for now!

Dawn: GREAT IDEA! I'll play and be the underachiever of ST :) --

As I enter my 3rd year, my goals are limited. I'm only doing a couple races:
  1. Train for Olympic Distance using a training plan. (I've never done this before)
  2. See how it works out for the my Oly tri in August (compared to 1st Oly tri last August)
  3. Lift weights 2x per week through the summer. (I always drop it by June)
  4. Not gain weight
  5. Have fun
  6. STOP comparing myself to other uber athletes on ST :) :) :)

Currently I'm doing pretty good sticking to it. I'm in week 9 of a 12 week plan that has 3x for S/B/R and I'm pretty happy with my progress. Gonna wing it for a couple weeks before starting a 10 week speed plan I found.

Love it. Mine are modest as I'm still trying to get back my fitness:

Goals:
- Complete three sprint tris (UBC - done, North Shore in 2 weeks, and TBD in June or Sept)
- Complete two OLY tris (Squamish in July and Apple in Aug)
- Complete a 10k race and a 5k race in the summer
- Complete a fall half marathon (Victoria or Okanagan in Oct - I'd like to do a full, but I don't think that's realistic yet... :-( )
- Kick butt on leg #2 at the Haney-to-Harrison relay in Nov.

Booyeah! then in 09, it's IMC baby!

AP
----------------------

On a related note: I got this set of questions from Cathy. It's a good thing to reflect on the past, it helps up close it off and look forward. Here goes:

1. What one word describes your 2007 season? Does it match what you said last December in anticipation of this year?AP: Tiring. I was tired for the better part of the year, and it turned out to be my thyroid. I started medication in late August, so to get where I am now (after a year of fatigue) is pretty good. I should stop beating myself up and praise myself for sticking with it.
2. What one word comes to mind when you think about your 2008 season?AP: Improvement. Cuz it's gotta be better than 2007!!
3. Did you race any new distance this year or try any new type of racing or sport?AP: Nope. Only race I did was the Haney to Harrison. Not new at all. Would have if the 101's had run... dammit.
4. What was your greatest thrill or joy this year from training or racing?AP: Gals of ST camp in April.
5. What was your biggest disappointment this year from training or racing?AP: Not racing Halifax 101 or Woodlands 101. Out of my control tho (races canceled).
6. What was your favorite race in 2007?
AP: Haney to Harrison. It's the only race I did, but it *is* one of my favourites, so that's a good thing I think.

awesome to have this started; i think this is going to do a lot of good for a lot of people!

1. i'm not really sure on my goals in totality, but for now i know i want to exercise 4-5 days out of the week and get strong and leaner. i'd like to gain some muscle and loose body fat and get into size 6 jeans. now i'm teetering between 8-10.

2. eat during the day. sometimes i don't want to be bothered with eating, it just feels like a hastle to stop what i'm doing for the sake of food. but i know if i don't eat my metabolism will tank, so eating at least 3 meals a day is a good start. and a bowl of ice cream is not considered "dinner".

3. drink water. so far i've really made alot of changes. i don't drink, don't smoke, reduced coffee, and generally keep it pretty clean. but water is the thing that cells need, and i could use more of it.

4. feel positive, not negative because i'm not racing. working out 4-5 times a week is a great starter goal, and just because "this time last year i was riding 100's" doesn't mean i'm a slacker or a loser. i need to keep it real and remember that i'm busting my ass and have lots to celebrate.

5. make time to go to the gym twice a week. and sit in the steam room because it's good for stress. so, 2 of the 4-5 workouts need to be at the gym. this is a nice "get away" for me and offers an environment of lots of exercise options. it's a good thing.

6. train jess for her big hiking trip. training her trains me, plus we get to hang out. this will be a part of #5 for the 2 times at the gym, this is something i can do with a partner which will make it even more rewarding.

Here goes:

1. Finish the NYC Tri strong
2. Train for and complete IMFL while starting school for my DPT
3. Set a PR in a Sprint Tri this July
4. Fly through the Army 10 miler in October
5. Finally get down to my "race weight" by IMFL ;-)

So, let me preface this with the fact that I am pretty slow so my goals may look like I am slacking but I have to bust my ass every step of the way. I just PR'd a marathon by going under five hours -- this was a 30 minute improvement over the last one in November. So off to a good start.

1. Finish Bay Swim in under 3 hours -- last year I went 3:20 due to a total melt down at mile 4.
2. Finish HIM under 7 hours. (Morgantown, WV). My first HIM was a little over 7 but I know I can do better.
3. Finish OLY under 3 hours. (Pittsburgh, PA). My last one was 3:04. So close, dammit. Must get there!
4. Ride at least 3 century rides, and run off the bike after at least one of them.
5. Finish IMFL. No time. Just finish the f-ing thing. (My first IM.)

Losing 10 pounds would be nice but right now my focus is on:
-avoiding a lot of processed crap. Oh you fat free pringles, you dirty little bastards, stop calling my name at the grocery store. Just about the nastiest product on the shelf, and I can eat the whole dang can.
- cutting back on diet soda. Not more than a few per week (rather than a few per day).
- not freaking out and eating everything in sight after a long, hard workout. Did okay after the marathon so off to a good start on this one already. This is a one-day-at-a-time goal for me that I will have to work on ALL year, since this is my major downfall. I must renounce Ben and Jerry.

Okay, you ladies have inspired me - I'm in!

1.) PR at Lake Stevens (the bar isn't terribly high on this one, my previous "best" is 8 hours at Pacific Crest... )

2.) Follow my training plan and not blow it off for stupid reasons (schedule mis-haps, something hurting is acceptable - sheer laziness is not!)

3.) Lose 5 lbs by Lake Stevens (7/6)

4.) Rein in the sweet tooth and junk food laziness that plagues my eating habits. Start planning ahead with healthy lunches and snacks.

5.) Sign up for Ironman Canada 2009 even though it scares the crap out of me.

The beatings will continue until morale improves

Sorry to get on your case, but I'm going to be a bit of a pain in the butt about your goals to see if I can help out a little. Part of your problem may be because of these unclear goals. Your goals need to be specific and measurable. Some of them are and some of them aren't. If they aren't specific and measurable then you'll never know if you reached them. I'm going to suggest that you change your goals to something like this:

1. Exercise at least 4 times a week.

2. Get into a size 6 jeans by XXX

3. Eat at least 3 times a day and never go more than 4 hours without eating something healthy.

4. Drink at least 4 large glasses of water every day.

5. Go to the gym at least 2 times a week.

6. Sit in the steam room at least 2 times a week.

I suggest you remove #4 from your list. If you do all of the above, I think #4 will follow naturally. Seriously, it you're doing all 5 of these things, then there's no way you can not feel positive about yourself.

Also, you might want to think about signing up for some kind of race that you can do without really training for it. For example, if you're running a couple of times a week, then sign up for some short trail runs to keep you motivated throughout the summer. Find something that is easily do-able and you haven't tried before.

Hope this helps.

I had to do this with my coach BUT this one has really got me thinking.
Here I go:

1. stay off the d coke:))
2. lose 15 lbs by IM AZ.....in 5 lb blocks
3. get my run back
4. quit bitching about trying to get my run back
5. try REALLY hard during my mile repeats
6. sub 5:30 at BSLT
7. kick the LH 70.3 courses ass.......like it did mine last year
8. don't have a total and complete meltdown on lap two of the run during IM AZ like I did three weeks ago pushing me just out of a Kona slot!!!!!!
9. remember #8 when I am complaining about running and not eating chips!!!!!!!!

I know there are more but it's a start.

1. gain some muscle and loose body fat and get into size 6 jeans by july 4th. now i'm coming from a 10 and the 8's are lose so that is good.

2. eat during the day. sometimes i don't want to be bothered with eating, it just feels like a hastle to stop what i'm doing for the sake of food. but i know if i don't eat my metabolism will tank, so eating at least 3 meals a day is a good start. and a bowl of ice cream is not considered "dinner". breakfast by 9am, lunch by 1, and dinner by 6pm, add 2 small snacks if i get hungry (which would be great if i got hungry)

3. drink water. so far i've really made alot of changes. i don't drink, don't smoke, reduced coffee, and generally keep it pretty clean. but water is the thing that cells need, and i could use more of it. 6 glasses a day, or 2 SIG bottles.

4. feel positive, not negative because i'm not racing. also feel positive about other things in my life. working out 4-5 times a week is a great starter goal, and just because "this time last year i was riding 100's" doesn't mean i'm a slacker or a loser. similarly, running 2 businesses requires alot of balance, so the 80/20 rule is a good one to remember. i need to keep it real and remember that i'm busting my rump and have lots to celebrate. everyday say prayers of gratitude and ask for "help" on what i'm trying to do.

5. make time to go to the gym twice a week, and workout 4-5 times a week. and sit in the steam room because it's good for stress. so, 2 of the 4-5 workouts need to be at the gym. this is a nice "get away" for me and offers an environment of lots of exercise options. it's a good thing. 2 times a week at the gym, and 2-3 times a home or on a trail. sit in steam room 2 times a week.

6. train jess for her big hiking trip. training her trains me, plus we get to hang out. this will be a part of #5 for the 2 times at the gym, this is something i can do with a partner which will make it even more rewarding. workout with jess 2 times a week at the gym, or on a hiking trail.

1. Lose 10 pounds by July 12--Musselman
2. Break 6 hours at Musselman even if it's 120 degrees that day.
3. Eat clean: No fried foods, No HFCS...at least 5 servings of plant matter a day.
4. Sleep when I'm feeling down about training instead of training more.
5. Make peace with my freaking job.

The last goal is not so easily measured. I think I need a Piss-O-Meter for that one!

Okay. Here we go.

1. Lose 15 pounds by one month before IMC
2. weight train twice a week
3. yoga or deep stretch or even better massage once a week
4. core exercises every other day
5. the three "r"s - rest, relax, recover
6. beat my swim time from high school (I will have to look it up)
7. start my races feeling confident and positive and ready to race
8. PR at IMC

Really my goals are the last three. The rest is going to help me get there.

OK, I'll rise to the challenge too. Here are my goals for 2008:

1. Complete the Worlds race in Vancouver and not be dead last in my age group.

2. Strength train 2 -3x per week, even when I'm short of time.

3. Have at least one race with a bike split averaging over 30 kph.

4. Successfully avoid another hamstring/calf/piriformis injury.

5. Get something positive out of every race, no matter how crappy the experience was over-all.

Now all I have to do is stick to them!

I just noticed you are doing Squamish. Have you done it before? Do you live in that area? I live in South Texas but have spent three summers in Whistler. I would love to connect with someone in that area for some cycling that won't be too intimidating. The locals are so accomplished. I've done Comfortably Numb two years in a row and probably will do that this summer as well. I'm a weak mountain rider and planning to use Squamish as incentive to get me ready for HIM @ Timberman in New Hampshire. Would love advice, connections that could be beneficial in Whistler/Squamish area. Thanks and good luck with your goals.

4. Be well trained/ prepared for upcoming tris and duathlons
5. Well executed marathon @ a solid race pace this winter

ok--i'm gonna give this a try! I can use all the motivation I can get!

1. Clean-up my diet. Eat more fruits & veggies. Eat 5-6 small healthy meals throughout the day.
2. Add 2-3 days of strength/core training per week to my schedule.
3. Lose 10 lbs before July 9th (That's the 7th Anniversary of my 29th Birthday! [You do the math!]:-)
4. Run a sub-4 hour Marine Corps Marathon in October. [Long term goal is to qualify for Boston--3:45]
5. Improve my cycling techniques so that I can sustain a 19-20 mph pace. And do at least 3 century rides this year.
6. Finish HIM (Silverman) in less than 6 hours.
***and last but not least***
7. Build a good training base so I can seek 'revenge' on IMAZ. I have a little score to settle. :-)

Ok I'm in. Great idea.

1) core work 2x/week I have been slacking off!

2) swim 4x/week

That's all I can think of right now.

Great idea Dawn!

Here goes

Triathlon:
1 - Qualify for 2009 ITU olympic distance worlds in Australia

2 - Overcome, or learn to deal with, my swim start psychosis (I'm fine in open water until someone sets off a starting gun)
2.1 - Race the swim, don't just swim it
2.2 - Draft in races

3 - Keep the gains I've made on the bike, especially my new-found ability to push through the hurt in training (when appropriate)
3.1 - Figure out the line between going hard enough but leaving something for the run
3.2 - Develop my bike-handling skills - learn to mount/dismount my bike while leaving the shoes on the bike, do 180's without unclipping and slowing down too much, etc.

4 - Get back whatever it is I've lost on the run
4.1 - Figure out what's wrong
4.2 - Do 1-2 5km or 10km races in June/July
4.3 - Learn to push more on the run in races

5 - Stop slacking on my training and follow the plan I'm paying for - go back to my IMC training philosophy of one "gimme" per month (i.e. allow myself one and only one opportunity per month to skip a workout for no good reason)

6 - Sign up for races before they sell out

Diet
1 - Less crap!

2 - Eat two pieces of fruit a day

3 - Eat breakfast at home every day

4 - Have healthy snacks at work (say "No!" to the siren call of Tim Horton's doughnuts)

5 - Watch the sodium (I'm good with fats, this is the next step)

General
1 - Keep it possitive - remember what I say affects my outlook so quit kvetching!

2 - Watch less TV

3 - Keep my blog up to date

4 - Pay down my debts and save for Worlds 2009!

1. Drop 7 pounds by IMLP
2. Clean up my eating. My eating was almost saintly last year & I dropped 23 pounds. Now I'm backsliding and some pounds have found their way back.
3. Do core exercises each & every day.
4. Finish IMLP in under 15 hours (To you speedsters that may laughable but to old slow me that will take mental concentration.), which means...
5. don't slow to a walk just because running becomes uncomfortable. IT'S AN IRONMAN-OF COURSE THE RUN IS UNCOMFORTABLE.
6. Get a new job. Don't just dream about getting new job, put in the work necessary to find one.

This will be my 2nd LP (did it 2002 and totally melted down on the run). I have a different coach this time and I think she's doing a good job of getting me ready. That said, I'll always feel that I haven't prepared enough/as much as everyone else.

My main easily measurable goals for the year are:
1) learn how to competently, gracefully, consistently, and successfully do a pedal wheelie over a 12 inch log
2) qualify for xterra worlds
3) complete 2 half ironmans, and get bike split below 2:45, run split below 1:50, train on tribike and not road bike to get very used to the position, instead of riding my road bike all year, and hopping onto a different bike for a race, only to have hips cramp up, neck ache, and legs not remember how to even walk when I got off the bike.
4) sign up for IM Louisville 2009 - that will be the 10th anniversary of my first ironman.

So, let me preface this with the fact that I am pretty slow so my goals may look like I am slacking but I have to bust my ass every step of the way. I just PR'd a marathon by going under five hours -- this was a 30 minute improvement over the last one in November. So off to a good start.

As far as I'm concerned, people with time goals aren't slacking. I'm still at the "I want to finish" level.

Here are my 2008 athletic goals:

1. Do my physical therapy exercises 3 times a week until I can run without knee pain.

2. Follow a OLY-distance training plan from now until the "Great Lake Escape" tri in September. (My first OLY)

3. Finish the aforementioned race before the finish line closes.

I know I'm late, but I've really been thinking about goals for the past week. I accepted a new job last week and start next Monday, so I wanted my goals to coincide with this major life change (more demanding job, longer commute, etc)
I came up with a bunch for all areas of my life, but I'll try to keep it simple here. (I made myself a spreadsheet for tracking them - I'm such a nerd)

1) Lose the pounds that came back this spring: get back down to 157 by May 28, down to 154 by June 25 and 152 by July 18. See 14--something on the scale by IMWI. Weigh no more than IM weight +5 by Nov. 14.

2) Maintain and improve the run speed I've gained over the winter. Finish the run part of Rockman in 2:25. Run San Antonio HM under 2:10 (I know that's not speedy to most of you!!) To do this, I'll continue to get my long run in every week, and do at least one speed workout.

3) Get in the water! I've been skipping a lot of swimming, so I will swim at least two hours per week, hopefully three.

4) More time on the bike. I will ride my bike at least 3 times per week for a total of at least 5 hours.

5) Continue weight training. Two times per week for 30-45 minutes each time.

6) Clean up my diet. A lot of the little things I know a lot of us are working on - reduce refined sugar, plan healthy meals, eat more real food. Specifically i will eat 5 servings of fruits/veggies a day, only one dessert per week, only one reasonable serving of chips and salsa per week (my downfall!) and make sure at least 2 meals and 2 snacks per day are made up of entirely real food (powdered cheese from a box does not count).

7) Spend 15 minutes every evening (either after dinner or before bed) doing things I don't like to do. Empty the dishwasher, floss my teeth, sort a load of laundry, pay bills, etc.

Glad you posted this. Hopefully it will keep me honest! Going through some major life changes too....this is all written in pencil:

1. lose 10# by IMLP.
2. Drop 1 hour off IMLP 2007 of 14:09 (actually to come in under 13h would be schweet)
2. Bike under 7 hours at IMLP.
3. get back into swimming 3x/week
4. run 4x/week
5. stay healthy!

My races and goals for each race:
Harriman Mini 5/17 (complete race, DNF last year)
Mooseman Olympic 6/8 (sub 2:45)
Whiteface Uphill bike race 6/14 (sub 1:25)
Lake Placid Half Marathon 6/15 (sub 1:59)
IMLP, 7/20 (sub 13h)
Timberman 70.3, sub 8/16 (sub 6h)
SOS race 9/10 (sub 6:45)
American zofingen SC, last year DNF

Here are my goals:

1) Lose 5-7 lbs by IMWI. I have been kinda/sorta working on this for about 8 months now and have been able to maintain my original 5lbs loss but now its time to get serious. And if I don't see a drastic decrease in weight with my IM training, hopefully at least see a reduction in the size of my mid-section.
2) Finish all four races at the Triple T. And at least be able to run some portion of the run in the Half-IM. (Success)
3) Survive through June 15. Between now and then, my weekend look like this -- One loop of the IM WI course, Triple T, a SAG ride of some distance between 50-75 miles, TOMRV (112 miles of riding on Sat, 88 on Sunday), and the Horrible Hilly (Success)
4) Meet all of my power goals on my rides. No more slacking on intervals.
5) Have at least 1 date with a boy
6) Have a terrific and fun day at IM WI.

Funny this thread has come along now; I'm struggling with keeping motivated for my second IM so I figured I need to set myself little goals each week.

This week my goals were:

1) eat better

2) get in all my workouts even if I don't feel like it.

3) focus on my nutrition on the bike; both during and after.

Results:

1) We didn't have take out once this week; I cooked dinner every night except for Tuesday when I was out at a concert.

2) I got all my workouts in, albeit 2 of them were shortened.

3) This one didn't go as well as I had hoped. I had a decent ride, until the last half hour (rode for 5 hours) when I started to feel tired and hungry (bad sign). I had a half hour run after my ride and I had a complete meltdown. Had to walk the second half of the run, felt dizzy and had absolutely no gas in the tank. I should have had more food on the bike. I won't make that same mistake next week.

A little late with this but... This is a totally great idea! Bringing me out of lurkdom (just posted once in the "introduce yourself" thread). :-)

I'm in NYC, on a team, training for a half (Timberman), but still don't always do what I plan, so the extra accountability here is a wonderful thing.

Here goes with goals:

Do all scheduled key team workouts. If I have to miss (only b/c of work or family obligations) make up on own.
subgoal - attend all early morning team bikerides, even if it looks like rain. ONLY miss if it is actually RAINING. :-)
1-2 extra workouts in addition to team schedule

Ride (new!) tribike 1x a week
Add 15 min to long bikeride every week till Timberman
Make sure to have some form of HILLS on bike every week

Attend 1 masters swim practice a week
Do full length of solo swims

Stretch-core-ice-foam roll 3-4x a week. (not all at once!)

Sleep 7.5-8.5 hours every night
Eat fruits-veggies/wholegrains/lean protein every day, 6-8 glasses water
One "free" day of less healthy eating but not excessively, 3-4 small "treats" a week too

Whew, okay, that's it!

Reading all I have over the past few months has been fun, now I'll be writing some as well as reading! :-)

I love the idea of posting goals and sharing support. There are so many diverse levels of goals in the posts. Mine are:
-Finish a 5k in less than 30 minutes
-Ignore my perfectionist streak about training that makes me get so worked up about it that I avoid it
-Break my personal best Sprint time at the Musselman in July
-Speed up my bike cadence
-Stay healthy enough to compete in two tris this summer
-Get fit for XCountry ski season this winter

Great Thread, Dawn. I'll spit it out.

1. From my login name, it's easy--qualify for the Boston Marathon at the Cal International Marathon in December. Would mean taking 20 minutes off my PR from 2 years ago--I'm in better running shape now, but it will still mean a world of pain.
2. Get over the idea that I'm a "slow runner" and start to think more positively about running!
3. Moving down to the 1:20 swim lane at masters! :)
4. Gain more peace when it comes to running/body image/weight/food. I'll be happier if I do, I know it!

Good luck to everyone!

Boston--what training plan are you using? One of my goals is to qualify for the 2009 Boston. I found "Run Less Run Faster" very helpful. I have been using it a little over a month and have improved my long distance pace by 1 minute. I used to run my long runs (9+ miles) at about a 10+ min/mile pace, but last week I was able to maintain a 8:50 min/mile pace for 10 miles! I think this training plan was what I needed to get over my 'slow and steady' mentaility.

2. Sub 2:45 at Great Lakes Escape Oly Triathlon
3. Break current women's 2-person relay time at Akron Mary
4. Run 3:40 marathon Richmond, Philly or Columbus in Fall (can't decide which one to do)

There all done.

Goals:
-Keep it all in perspective. A disappointing workout is not a reason to sulk all day.
-Eat more protein! (recently ditched vegetarianism and trying to figure that out)
-Train Smart. Listen to my body. Consistency is key! No more stress fractures!
-Stretch and Core everyday!
-Sub 10H at IM Kona.
-Have fun : )

After my recent driving vacation (18 hours of driving total) where I spent much of that time thinking about what I really want to do this year, I've revised my goals. I decided that I'm not ready to jump back into another marathon. Sure, I can do one this fall, but I'm not where I want to be speed-wise. So, I'm setting my sights on running a faster half marathon instead. Once I can run a sub-1:50 half marathon, then I'll be ready to train for another full.

So here's my original and revised goals:

1. Run a minimum of 5 times a week, every week.
Yep, keeping this the same.

2. Break 4 hrs in a fall marathon. I really want to BQ (need a 3:50), but I don't think I can get there this year. I want to get as close as possible and I definitely thinking breaking 4 hrs is do-able.
Break 1:53 in a half marathon. This will be a good challenge for me. Still going long (love to run long), but short enough that I can concentrate on getting faster and not just going longer.

3. Lose 20 lbs by September 30, 2008.
Yep, keeping this one the same too.

4. Survive American Zofingen.
Now that I won't be slogging out the run miles, I want to do more than just survive AmZof. My training plan will now consist of more biking than I originally planned. Getting through the bike in reasonable condition will be the key to this race, so I've got to get some good legs on the bike before October.

Hey, I'm new here but I thought I'd post the goals that I had posted on another forum along with updates from the current season.

Goals for this season
- Start running closer to a 7:30/mile pace off of my bike in sprint and olympic distance races.
Done, I ran at a 6:57 pace in one race and 7:17 in another.
- Run a sub-1:45:00 half marathon (my best right now is 1:47:00)
- Run a 21:30 5k (best now is 21:48)
Close, I ran 21:33 off my bike last May, I can probably do this in a stand-alone 5k at this point.
- Finish an ironman in under 12:00:00 (11:30:00 is my stretch goal)
- Get my half ironman under 5:15:00 (best now is 5:25:00 but that was with fixing a flat so it's probably more like 5:20:00)
Done, 5:10:36 at lake stevens
- Drop 5 lbs. before the first race of the season (in 2 mos.)
Failed at this but I dropped inches so I'm not too worried about it.

Way in the future goals
- I'd like to see my half iron time get close to or under 5:00:00
Hoping to do this at Clearwater (although that feels a little like cheating since it's such a fast race)
- Qualify for and race Clearwater
Done at Lake Stevens, finished 4th in AG (25-29) and 15th overall amateur.
- Qualify for and race Kona
- Get my half marathon under 1:40:00
- Run a sub 1:50:00 half marathon off of my bike in a half ironman
Done at Lake Stevens, 1:48:58
- Run a sub 4:00:00 marathon off of my bike in an ironman
- Qualify for and race in the Boston Marathon

With the season winding down, I'm confessing. I haven't met all my goals for 2008:

1. Complete the Worlds race in Vancouver and not be dead last in my age group. (Done)
2. Strength train 2 -3x per week, even when I'm short of time. (Nope - see #4)
3. Have at least one race with a bike split averaging over 30 kph. (Managed this unofficially, lost time in crash)
4. Successfully avoid another hamstring/calf/piriformis injury. (No again - sigh)
5. Get something positive out of every race, no matter how crappy the experience was over-all. (Done, although I don't feel great about the season as a whole. Trying to turn the page and look forward to 2009).

Wishing everyone else success with their goals. Great thread!

Hi all,

I just dropped by to have a look at the current topics of conversation and saw Dawn's Goals thread. I thought I'd share an article with you all that I wrote earlier this year for a New Zealand magazine. I hope it's useful to somebody. You'll have to excuse any references to the Olympics as that was my goal at the time of writing....a goal that sadly got away!! But sometimes we learn more from not achieving our goals, it's just how we reflect upon this apparent failure that in turn motivates us to greater accomplishments!

If anybody has any questions, feel free to ask.

Best Regards,

Sam Warriner.

The alarm bursts into life and I scramble to silence it before it screams the house down. It’s 4.30am and I’m sure it’s been just minutes since I fell into bed exhausted. Breakfast consists of a couple of slices of toast and a coffee. Then it’s out the door and into the night.

The 20 kilometre ride to the pool helps me get psyched for the 240 lengths ahead. Then it’s another mad dash to Whangarei Girls High in time for Miss Warriner to put on her other face.

After spending the morning talking about everything from hockey skills to sexual health, lunchtime arrives and I sprint up the road to the local gym to fit in a weights session. In 50 minutes, I expend more energy than most would in a day, and then it’s back for two more periods of school.

The bell goes once more, as if to signify yet another battle round. And a battle is just what the next two hours turn out to be, with my coach pushing me in the run session from Hell. I return to school leg-weary to write up the following day’s lessons. An hour later, it’s a brisk 20 kilometre pedal home in time for dinner. Exhaustion is becoming surprisingly normal!

Fast-forward to 2008:
That was just an average weekday for me back in 2005. Like most, I had to work to pay the bills. I had already been to the Athens Olympics at that stage and won two ITU World Cups. I look back now and wonder just how I did it. How did I fit everything in? And the only answer I can give is that I had goals and a desire to achieve them.

Why do I set goals?
  • They give me a clear target – gold in Beijing.
  • They help my time management.
  • They provide motivation and inspiration – I constantly visualise winning gold at the 2008 Olympics.
  • They help me prioritise.
  • They give me a road map of how to get to where I want to be.

This past summer has been awesome, and not just because of the weather. There have been so many different events to train for that you couldn’t fail to find one to test you. Whether you’re a Real Woman, a More FM woman or even one of Sarah’s loyal Sub girls, the choice of events has been just fabulous for we females. Now, however, with the end of summer comes the most important time of the year. It’s time to reflect on what you’ve achieved and then plan how you’re going to have an even better season in 2009.

Setting successful goals takes two steps

First, decide on a goal. Second, you must actually plan how you are going to achieve it. This is where most people fall down. It’s easy to wake up one day and say: “Right, next year I’m going to finish the Ironman”. The hard thing is knowing how to do it.

Any journey needs a map and planned route. Goals are the same. They remain dreams unless you can plan how to get there.

Step 1 Set those goals

Long-term goals (LTG)
The LTG is what gets you out of bed on a cold, wet morning. Without one, it would be much easier to turn off the alarm and roll over! It needs to be realistic and meaningful to you. Decide on something you’ve always wanted to do, and make sure you challenge yourself to dream high!

Short-term or progressive goals (STG)
These are the stepping-stones that get you towards your LTG. If you were a novice triathlete, you wouldn’t jump straight into an Olympic distance event. You’d set the short-term goal of finishing a local fun run or ride first. The key is to achieve your STGs and gain the confidence that you can master LTG.

Process Goals (PG)
For me, every session has a PG. Some days, that can mean four or five different technical things to focus on, which can really help keep a boring session interesting. For you, it could be as simple as spending 30 minutes power-walking. If that’s a step towards your LTG, then get out there and pound that pavement!

Step 2 Make your goals a reality

To make our goals real, we need to continually re-visit them. Write them down in the front of your diary, so that every time you open it, up they are staring right back at you, keeping you honest. Mine are written on the bathroom mirror, so I see them first thing in the morning and last thing at night, as I clean my teeth.

Using the three-goal method also allows you to reward yourself with each achievement. I regularly do this by way of a massage, a glass of wine or a girl’s ‘pamper night’. If I’ve worked hard or achieved a STG, I congratulate myself.

Every night, before I go to bed, I ask myself if there is anything I could have done better that day. If the answer is no, then I know the day was a good one.

A life with well-planned goals

Achieving goals comes down to your mindset, so don’t place limitations on your imagination when you’re planning them. You often hear people saying that goals should be realistic. I say that if you want something badly enough, you’ll go out there and make your own reality. Dream high.

When I started in triathlon it was all about getting fit and losing weight. I had just turned 30. With my friend Bart, we would ride to work on alternate days, rewarding ourselves with an ice cream on the way home. On the other days, we would swim lengths at the local pool, gradually increasing the number we did.

I began my racing with a local short triathlon. I enjoyed it so much that I aimed at a longer event, and from then on, my goal was to get faster. Before I knew it, I was second in my age group at the 2001 World Championships. I then watched the professionals race the following day and said to myself, “next year, that will be me”.

In 2002, I achieved that goal. I came in just about last, but that simply made me set about becoming faster, so that I might finish in the top 20 the following year. The rest, as they say, is history.

Now, six years on, I’m living my own personal dream, winning World Cup races, and continually re-setting goals and working away at achieving them. I have always set goals based on what I believe I can achieve. Each one was a small, but challenging, towards improving myself.

I hope I’ve motivated you in some small way. Now’s, the time to sit down, reflect on where you are at, and – more importantly – decide where you want to be. Set a new LTG and plan the STGs to get there.

Check out my website: www.sweat7.com If you look under ‘Get sorted on Goals’, you’ll find an easy-to-use goal-setting form. Print it off and put it in your diary! Never mind how big or small your aim; if you believe, you’ll achieve. It’s all in the mind. Set the goal, make the time, and you will see just how rewarding and fulfilling it can be for all areas of your life and health. And, next issue, we’ll look at some basic training tips to start bringing your dreams a little closer to reality, regardless of your background and other commitments.

Example of bad goal-setting:

Goals for 2009: I am going to run/walk a half-marathon in less than two hours.

It’s a bad goal, because:
  • There’s no timeline of when the event is.
  • There’s no action plan of how you are going to do it.

Example of good goal-setting:

LTG for 2009: I am going to run the Auckland Half-Marathon in less than two hours in October.

STGs to get there:
  • I am going to run every other day, so by the end of August I can complete that distance.
  • I am going to join a local/walk run club and ask my friend to come with me.
  • I will aim to do the local 10km race series in Auckland for fun and to see how I’m improving.
  • I will include hills in my training from July, as the course is hilly. I will start with three hill reps of Northcote Rd and increase to eight by the end of August.

PGs
  • I will focus on relaxing my breathing as I get into my rhythm of running or walking.
  • I will aim to run for five minutes longer than last week every time I train.
  • I will have a shorter recovery in between my walk/run effort.
  • I will get up the hill faster this time.
  • I will focus on pumping my arms as I drive up the hill, lifting my feet up, kicking my heels up to my butt quicker, and keeping my hips forward and working.

Welcome to the forum. I hope you stick around a bit. This post a great addition to this thread, but I think you need to post it as it's own thread as well. Not too many people are going to come back in here to read this thread after it's been up top for so long and it would be a shame if this got lost in the shuffle. Why don't you start a new thread with this article?

Here are my 2008 athletic goals:

1. Do my physical therapy exercises 3 times a week until I can run without knee pain.

2. Follow a OLY-distance training plan from now until the "Great Lake Escape" tri in September. (My first OLY)

3. Finish the aforementioned race before the finish line closes.

1. I didn't do the physical therapy, but when I slowed down and took days off, I was able to run without knee pain.
2. The GLE tri was cancelled. I followed most of the training plan, but I couldn't keep up with the run portion.
3. I ended up doing a different race, sprint division, and finishing first in the Athena division.

First, I'd just like to say this is the coolest website I've ever seen!

Goals 2008/2009 for cycling:

1. Get my cat. 2 upgrade
2. Repeat win ACCC championship individual and TTT (with the most amazing girls EVER, love you guys!)
3. Win Redish Knob hill climb
4. Try out for the Armed Forces team (and make it!)

I've never shared my goals before, its a little nerve racking to throw them out there for all to see... :o) Thanks for giving me an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone.

2008/2009 cycling goal cont.

In order to accomplish my goals: I must be FOCUSED, and disciplined in my training without over training, something I've struggled with in the past. This year I think I've finally figured out how to balance my desire to improve and succeed with my training gains vs. time, limits. I'm having more fun and seeing bigger gains then ever before!
Sort term focuses include:
1. Improve my time trial position, which I will get to do this weekend when I take a trip to Cadence (yay LT, and VO2 max test in the same day...) I've always just sorta gone off strength, I totally lack finesse.
2. Keep a positive attitude, sometimes I mentally defeat myself before the race even starts. For me its important to realize that a bad race doesn't equal a bad cyclist.
3. Envision myself succeeding, because what the body can't overcome, sometimes the mind can.

UPDATE:

The HIM I signed up for canceled it's swim & my foot was bothering me, so I 86'dthe entire race to avoid any further injury.
The Oly was completely canceled as I had my sights set on Great Lakes Escape
Women's 2-person relay at Akron. Well, we broke last year's time and won the race, but missed the record set in the 1st or 2nd year (Bummer).
Finally, headed to Philly for my marathon and went sub-3:40 to qualify for Boston. ( 2009 will undoubtedly hold a "new" marathon goal time for me now).

Plan did not go very well, but my "A" goal was the marathon and even though I did not read the directions and post in order of importance (rather by date of competition...sorry) I got the BIG ONE.

Hope everyone else was successful in their endeavors.

So, how did everyone do on their 2008 goals?

Me? Not so good since training changed mid-year. On to 2009!

I did about 50/50. Didn't hit my weightloss goals, as usual. But, I did get my runner across the finish line at Badwater and set a PR at IMCdA. Didn't end up doing the 50 miler or Boise Half.

I did surprisingly well on my goals. PR'd Lake Stevens, (though not by as much as I would have liked) signed up for IMC and followed my training plan pretty faithfully. Didn't do as well on my nutrition and weight goals, but feel like I'm slowly but surely starting to get them under control. On to 2009!

I say I was quite successful. While I never did get my date (but I really didn't try very hard) and I am not sure I can say that I had fun every minute of IMWI, I am overall happy with my 2008 season. On to 2009!
