just got owned by the benchpress

Uuuuggh....I was pretty bored here at the shop, so I decided to go next door to see how I would fare on the flat bench press. I used to weigh 220 and could put up 305, starting around 215 and working my way up. Now, at 173 and just doing push-ups on a swiss ball, I could do no more then 2 sets of 10 reps at 185.

What an eye-opener...

Think I'll just stick to that swiss ball and kettle balls

Yeah, but you now have functional strength as opposed to pretty strength. Consider that the vast majority of people out there can barely manage a pushup, and couldn't even dream of pressing their weight even once...

You've lost a lot of weight, but you've lost less on your bp. 10 reps in a 1 rep max calculator at 185# converts to a 1 rep max of 250#.

Hey, that's not bad at all. At one point in my life I could do about 3 bills myself but I haven't done ANY weight training in years. About 2 months ago I stepped into the weight room after a swim and put 185 on the bar, curious to see if I could even lift it once. I had no idea what to expect so I grabbed a spotter but managed to get it up without his help. I might have been able to do one more but that would have been it.

Where is that calculator?
I thought it was 10% more than your 10 rep set. You are saying it is more like 35%?

I don't like to do a true 1 rep max on the bench for health and safety reasons, so I use a calculator:

That reminded my of my own embarrassing bench press story :

On a trip to Europe, just killing time, I went into the gym to to a little weights. The bench press already had two 45 plates on, so I was good too. I normally do 3 sets of 10 with this for warm-up. I realized my mistake halfway into the first rep! The plates were of course in Kilos, not pounds. I thought they looked bigger than usual, but was thinking they had some thick rubber coating or something. I got stuck under the bar and had to slowly roll it down over my stomach and hips to get free!
One of the regulars, a big lifter guy came over and helped me out, and asked If I was OK. I am sure they told that story for some time.

that's pretty damn funny.
a few months ago, I was in the barracks trying the dumbbell benchpress with kettle balls on my swiss ball. anyway, I got a few reps done, and then started to drift a little off balance. well, thank God I was by myself, 'cause it was the slowest "eat shit" fall I've ever taken. I rolled off to the left, over my head, bounced off the other bed, and crashed into the door !

I've yet to try it again with heavier weights

When reading my points...keep in mind, I'm a big believer in weight training.

1. to be fair, push ups on a swiss ball ARE harder than normal ones -at least how I see most people doing them they are.

2. You (probably) swim/bike/run faster (at least faster over a longer distance) NOW...than when you were 220 (of course I'm assuming that and could be wrong)

For me...I've spent the past year and a half eating (to gain weight) and lifting....(I'm up 17lbs! woohoo!)

I've found that...I can output more watts on the bike....for short periods of time.

Again for me, due to weak hip flexors...or whatever else might have been messed up in my hip (and maybe still is)....the weight lifting has allowed me to be more comfortable while riding...which in turn allows me to ride longer and harder (from at least a perceived level of exertion).
