Numb Toes
My toes went numb on two 50 mile rides I did this weekend. It made it really difficult to run after the ride when I did my brick on sunday. Any advice on how to prevent this?

If it was cool out, try booties. Also, make sure your shoes aren't strapped too tight or socks aren't too thick.

Just a thought: Until I learned to pedal in circles my feet would go numb, usually at the toes. Pedaling in circles seems to have corrected my numbness problems by distributing the pressure rather than focusing it at a point on the foot. If you are a masher, you are putting nearly constant pressure on some part of your foot. That can't be helping...

Although impossible to say without seeing your shoe fit your shoes could be either to large (the likelyhood) or too small. The symptoms of shoes too large "feel" like having the shoes too small: Numb toes (from movement in the shoe impacting the front of the shoe), hot spots, black toenails. These things are frequently a result of ill-fitting (and most commonly too large) shoes. One of the biggest battles we fight in here is getting somebody into the right size shoes.

I've read your fine piece on shoe fitting on your site. It actually encouraged me to purchase my shoes so that they fit very snugly, much to the chagrin of the salesperson. There is little if any wiggle room in the shoes, so I don't think that's a problem. I should mention they are Carnac 7's, and I'm using Look pedals. I'll loosen the strap next time and try to circle pedal a little more, though I'm not a masher, more of a spinner.
