Final Chapter: Crazy ToC Story
I had a late start yesterday due to a meeting, but I was riding full speed to Sierra road to watch the riders suffer up the 15% grade. As I got close, I noticed the helis headed toward the start of the climb: they were moving fast. I ended up at the base and saw a few stragglers head up the hill. I changed direction and rode down Piedmont to see the riders negotiate the sharp corner from Calavares (steep hill) to Piedmont. Waiting around at the corner I noticed that it was going to be an interesting turn because a stop sign with an elevated curb separated both lanes. I watched Levi and the chase group slowly round the corner and rocket toward downtown. Next I decided to ride down Piedmont on the sidewalk (not very many people were on this section). The next group of about 6 riders were overtaking me so I decided to ride a little faster abreast of them (yes, I’m that guy). They fly by and I start up a slight rise in the road.

I hear “Red Jersey, Red Jersey.” I’m wearing a vanilla Pearl red jersey. “Red Jersey.” I’m thinking, WTF, I’m on the sidewalk because there is a race on the road, does the race “police” want me to walk? I peddle faster. “Red Jersey” I kick it up a notch, I’m amazed that a race volunteer can run that fast. Finally, “Red Jersey” is shouted very close to me. I stop feeling like I’m going to be busted for a crime. I look around and it is a CSC rider. “I need your rear wheel”. 5 seconds elapse were I’m trying to think about the fact that I’m riding my road bike and not my newer Cervelo and my road bike has a 9-speed cassette. My response, “Ok, but it may not fit”—not the technical response that I wanted. “It’s better than this” He lifts up his Zipp 404 that is trashed. Ok, I take the rear wheel off my bike and I’m not quite sure if I’m supposed to pop it in or he is going to do it. He puts it in, but the chain isn’t lined up on the cassette… I go down and line it up to pop the wheel in and he moves me aside to tighten the QR. He says- “This had to be the slowest wheel change ever” Me-“uh, sorry”. “Do you want a boost?” “Yeah”. I finally get my act together and launch him forward with a good full run in my cycling shoes (I’m glad I’ve got Crank Bros cleats). “Come to the finish, Team CSC, We will hook you up.” I then realized that I never even looked at his face and I don’t know who is on the CSC roster this year.

I’m standing around and now it is sinking in… What am I supposed to do now? I’m about 8-10 miles to the finish. I talk to several people on the side of the road and some of them thought that I was in the race and he was my team mate—nice. One of them offers me a ride downtown and I take it. It turns out that this guy is now retired from working 35 years in the same company that I work for. The day is getting more bizarre. It takes awhile to make it downtown with the road closures and by the time I arrive at the finish, Levi is on the podium. I go around to where the team cars are located, but CSC is nowhere to be found. I talk to a mechanic from Colorado with Mavic race support (he tells me- “you're a hero”) and he gives me the hotel that they are staying at which happens to be in Monterey (about 70 miles away). I head home by riding light rail.

I call the hotel from my house and bounce around a few rooms until I get ahold of Kim Andersen. After I tell my story, (yeah, I’m that guy) I tell him that I won’t be able to make any more stages… He says, “I don’t know what we can do.” “Can’t you mail me my wheel back; can you write down my address?” “No… that wouln’t work to well… I’m not great with writing english….” Hmmm... “What rider was it?” “Bobby…. Yeah, you should talk to him… here’s his room number.”

I call and leave a message with my phone number. Half an hour goes by and my phone rings… I’m on the phone with Bobby Julich.

He explains that he was turning onto Piedmont and he forgot about the traffic island and slammed into it. He continued riding for 1.5 miles when he saw me. “There was no way that I was going to let you get away without me taking your wheel.” I give him my address and comment that he could throw some zipps in with the box… He laughs and says that he will try and put “something in there from the team.”

I’m looking for a photo of Julich finishing with a yellow tire michelin rear wheel.

So, what should I do with the Zipp?

Thats too cool. As for the wheel - well I would have thought CSC would want it back but if not, you should consider contacting Zipp to get a Return Authorization (RA) to have the rim replaced! Afterwards, you have a new wheel that you can sell on Ebay or use for racing.

That's a pretty cool story, man. I don't remember what the UCI regs are on taking equipment from outside the race, but I'd have done the same thing (though he might not have done so well with a Campy cassette).

You've now got a cool memento.

I'd hope he takes proper care of you... those things are expensive for us mere mortals. For how large of an operation CSC is, he can certainly 'do something for you' more than just mail your wheel back. For pete's sake - you being willing to loan him your $1000+ wheel allowed him to finish the race!

As for the wheel, I might spend a few bucks and send it back to zipp for repair! I don't thing that it woudl be free, but the story might give you some street cred ;-)

I was watching a crit about 5 years ago when someone came walking up with a flat. I offered my rear wheel and he started to put it on and then just stopped, saying there is a rule about using support other than neutral or team.

I should add some clarification... The photo is his wheel that he blew up. My wheel was a basic vanilla Shimano WH-540. It should be in the mail soon. He rode the Shimano to the finish. I'm looking around for a photo of him finishing with my wheel.

Yeah, I'm hoping for the "hook up," but I'm a bit disappointed that it seemed to be a big deal to mail me my wheel back...

Hank,

Great story and well told. I'd probably just hang onto the Zipp as a souvenir. You can tell people that it should be obvious it belonged to Julich because it's now shaped just like his chainring. ;-)

is the tub punctured or is it still useable? if it's still useable you have a spare tub right there. add to that the dura ace 10 speed cassette, and the 24H zipp rear hub and that's the total value of your shimano wheel right there. not to mention the zipp skewer. Now all you have to do is ask zipp to sell you a flashpoint rear rim and you can recycle the spokes too. Not bad for a brand new race wheel.

That's a good idea... And I could keep the rim for the garage wall hall of fame. But, I'm looking at the Zipp website. The Flashpoint 60 has 20 spokes for the rear... The 404 has 24.

I remember reading something similar a while back about a bystandard on a Colnago watching a race. Ride came by with the seatpost busted off his bike (got to this point standing the whole way). Asked if he could use his bike (thankfully had the same cleats and everything) and he tore off using it. Caught up with the team car a bit down the road..adjusted the seat height and he finished off the race. Think he might have won it too. Not sure what the guy or the team did for him but the bragging rights on his bike now..oi!

I did not... The conversation was pretty quick, he was still amped. Right now, I'm thinking about about a thousand things that I could have come up with, but I was in-between bathtime and story time when he called. Failed bunny hop? I'm really hoping I'll be able to find someone that was on that corner to get that side of the story... I'm actively looking around on flikr for photos.

In general, there are no real rules about outside technical assistance for a wheel change. It is part of the sport's "cachet" and history that a spectator can be so involved as to sacrifice something in the hopes the competitor can continue.

In the case of your crit rider who claimed a rule against a wheel change, he is most likely mistaken. In general, crits are small course and very fast. Taking support and feeding outside the designated zones is typically dangerous. So feeding is restricted by the commissaires to a particular area.

In the case of mechanical incidents, you have to get to the mech repair zone, often near the start finish. There, an official can consider your predicament and grant a "free lap" starting you back in with the pack the next time they come around, and you are still racing as if nothing happened.

You probably won't get a free lap if you take a change somewhere on the course, and come rolling around, dropped, saying "I flatted, then got a wheel, and now I want a free lap". Most commies will tell you you blew it, have fun catching up. "no lap for you!"

In general you DON'T get a free lap for a crash. Only a mechanical incident. Crashing is part of racing and it is considered just another way you can lose a race. There is some forgiveness if your bike breaks or tire flats. A typical trick, if you have crashed, is to get your ass to the mech repair, and while you are running, jam your rear brake against the wheel. Make sure the mechanic has something to fix, so the commie says "oh yes, that's a mechanical problem too...free lap for you!" and off you go. Nobody cares about your skinned knees and elbows...just don't show up to the tent with a working bike.

Smelly.

I am a traveling Course Marshal with the Tour and I was working that corner and all I can say is that Julich is an amazing rider. He came down in a pack of about 20-30 and was in the back third. We were flagging like crazy but because of his position he could not see the median. He pulled his front wheel up at the last second, nailed the curb with his back, bounced up on to the front wheel (as if about to go over the bars), rode up onto the far sidewalk (there was a little opening where the curb was reduced as if at a cross walk), regained balance, and rode on.
Neutral support was ahead of them and team cars were still stuck on the hill. He immediately threw his hand up for a wheel, looked back and realized he was alone, and so he continued on. Your story is making the rounds of the entire race entourage. I believe you will get hooked up pretty good...Anon

Okay, you can mark my words on this...some team mechanic is going to go "what the fuck"...take the wheel off of the bike and put it in a corner of a truck. That wheel will then travel all over hell with the mechanic wondering where in the hell it came from. Some weeks down the road the original owner will make a call and get somewhere....then he will get a super kick ass wheelset (probably Zipp) and a poster signed as well as some clothing...but that wheel...I doubt he will ever see that wheel again.

The word "may" indicates there is some possibility of of "will not". Having been privvy to many such decisions, I can assure you that some commies take the "will not" option. Get to the pits with a "broken bike", increases your chances.

"The word "may" indicates there is some possibility of of "will not".'"

Yes, but the "will not" follows from the earlier part of the sentence in 5D5
"Riders shall normally cover the distance of the race regardless of mishaps and must make up any distance lost on their own ability unless a free lap is granted for mishaps."

The free lap rule does not have to be in effect (that's where the "may" comes from), but once it is, all mishaps must be given a free lap within the restrictions of 5D5(d).

Having received training directly from Colorado Springs, I can say that if officials are not granting free laps for crashes, they don't understand the rules properly.

Indeed, from the uci rulebook, couldn't find CDN easily, but it's usually a copy of the UCI:

2.7.022 In the case of a recognised mishap as defined in the provisions governing track races (article
3.2.021), the rider shall be entitled to a neutralisation of one or two laps to be determined by the
commissaires according to the length of the circuit. After the neutralisation, the rider shall resume
the race but shall not earn any points in the following sprint.

Recognised mishap
3.2.021 The following shall be considered recognised mishaps:
• a fall
• a puncture
• the breakage of an essential part of the bicycle.
All others incidents are considered un-recognised mishaps.

This is better much wording than any "may", but it makes your point. Note the commie discretion is not about neutralization...only on how long it can be...1 or 2 laps. Perhaps this is the part they misunderstand?

...but I've seen enough commies deny the "fall" case often enough. Knowing that, I would always do the breaking-part... they seem to all know about that one, and they have likely already handed out a free lap for the guy who has flatted on lap one. I've even heard one commie say "why the f@#$ didn't he just let the air out of his damn tire while he was walking over??". Lesson learned.

I am kind of an idiot about mechanical stuff. Could Bobby J tell just by sight that the wheel was going to work? Aren't there a lot of things that could have mismatched?

This is driving me crazy. I swear that the incident with the borrowed bike referred to by Kentiger earlier was in the Tour de Langkawi. I believe it was David George who borrowed a Colnago from a spectator (same as what his team rode) on a climb. Luckily the bike had pedals that fit his cleats. He went on to defend the leader's jersey that day and eventually win the overall (2006). Believe me I tried to research this (to no avail before posting). Please, if some one can link to a description of the incident, I would love to put my mind to rest.

What's up with the black electrical tape around the valve stem? Why is this used?

Re: Crazy ToC Story: I Finally own a Zipp Wheel… [hipster doofus] [ In reply to ]
I remember watching that on TV - Tour Down Under...breakaway..kind of on the outskirts of town with like 5k to go and there were only about 3 folks on the side of the road - one of them just happened to have that Colnago with the same pedals and it was the right size. When he took off on that borrowed bike the seat height was way off and there was a kit bag under the seat kinda swayin' in the breeze. Then camera cut away to the chase pack and when it came back to lead group the team car had pulled up, removed the bag and adjusted the seat.

An amazing set of circumstances.

I was there the day Michael Rogers got the replacement bike from a spectator. He was very lucky to have not only a spectator with the bike but one with the same pedals! Later on, he had the team mechanic come along side in the car to adjust the seatpost up as it was a bit short for Rogers.

if you hit "view all" and then just look at all the pictures, you'll get the gist of it.

Got it!

Again. Great story and some awesome pics of Julich. Amazing bike handling skills. For the most part pro road riders are riding many courses blind, in that they really only see them on race day. It's rare that they reconn a whole course - perhaps just the critical spots where they believe moves will be made then of course in many of the classics it's more or less the same course from year to year, so they may be familier with it. However, I am sure that the course look very different from the reccon sessions, with no one on the side lines to fans lining the road. It amazes me that there are not more crashes. Testement to the amazing bike handling skills of these riders.

Hey guys, new here, first post on this forum actually but have been following this story from another forum for some days ( thanks schroeder and you still suck!) now and just wanted to say what you all already know, cool story indeed! cute kid as well hank! I wished you would've gotten a new bike or at least a new wheelset but good of you to help out!

I don't think that I will be able to play it off as a warranty item... This story has gone pretty wide. Do Zipps have serial numbers?[/quote] Yes - well sort of as there is a white label with a serial number on it on the surface of the rim under the tubular tire that is glued to the wheel. Cannot say for sure whether or not Zipp notes the serial number for the rim when a wheel is returned for crash replacement but my suggestion would be to continue to be the good samaritan and return the wheel to CSC or send a PM to Josh at Zipp (forum member) and see what he says.

OK - pretty good swag from CSC...but I think an "epic" story like this one deserves a little more! This is becoming ST legend for god sake. With 42000+ views...someone out there has got to hook this guy up with a new set of 404's! Weather it be straight from Zipp or a "pro discount"...something better needs to come of this. Let's put an "story book" ending to this.

I will be the first to Paypal $20 to anyone who "legitimately" puts together a "let's get Hank Rearden a set of Zipps" fund! I can't get anything less than MSRP...Bike shops, dealers, manufacturers...let's get this done.

Really?? I find the "how much can he milk this for" aspect of this thread to be a detractor. I'd be happy with just the story to tell. He's gotten a lot more than that.

I also think he should keep the wheel as is, not try to fix it to ride on. Maybe take it to a race in the future and see if he can get it autographed. You can buy any old wheel to ride on, but there's just one that belongs to this story.

This really is a great story and I'm glad Julich hooked you up. My advice would be to hold on to the wheel and use it next year during the Tour of California to "revisit" the incident and get on the Adobe Tour Tracker broadcast to tell the story. The wheel itself will also serve as sort of a "VIP" pass into the team areas and then maybe give it back to Julich? That would be a nice ending I think.

Or you could make the wheel into a necklace.....that's what the real Hank Rearden would do ;^)

The Paypal thing is only my personal suggestion for someone with Zipp connections and similar thoughts about thinking that this story needs a "better" ending.

If the "ST" gods don't agree - oh well. My $20 can go to buying other useless crap I don't need!

As for you "pimping" your story...please. It is very evident that you are taken aback by the whole event and want to share with likeminded people.

haha-- yeah I'm working on my own blend on carbon fiber... RC (Rearden Carbon) that is 30% lighter and has a yield strength 40% better than the competition.

I'm really not sure right now what I will do with the wheel... I was thinking it would be a good compromise to save the rim as a souvenir and use the hub/spokes to ride with. Generally, I don't like the Ferrari sitting in the garage museum piece, but I'm still open to options.

"how much can he milk this for"

I'm not trying to milk this for anything. As stated in all of my posts I'm very happy that I have a lifetime story to tell and CSC's response with the box was great. I love the signed CSC baseball hat. My posts about a set of Zipps were joking, I really was not expecting them.

Thanks - that is exactly my motivation. I'm pretty shocked to the number of views- I was expecting a few hundred. I went up to Tahoe for the weekend without net access and came back to a very big surprise. The fact that people like the story non-withstanding my poor storytelling (Engineer) is very surprising. And I like the fact that the story is posted/linked on ST.

I would just let your LBS know of the story and have them contact their Zipp Rep and see if they would like the wheel back and you would be willing to send it back for a pro deal or industry price for a wheel set. Most of our Reps (other brands) have commented on it and have said that if you contact Zipp through a Rep then they will more than likely hook you up with a good deal nothing free but maybe better than nothing.

Last year at the ToC I got an used water bottle straight from Michael Rasmussen bike and I had him sign it (I had to dump the water after a few days though), I also got a sweaty (and smelly) T Mobile cycling hat from Michael Rogers and he signed it too, so if I kept little souvenirs "untouched", you bet I'd keep the wheel as is.

I think the story is worth a lot more than material things, also what happened to helping others without expecting anything in return just for the sake of being helpful? I also think that the classy thing to do would be for him to pack up the wheel and ship it back to csc/zipp and let this thread die, but maybe that's just me.

I'm in agreement with Katy.

The guy who is out a zipp wheel is Bobby Julich, not Hank. Hank lent his wheel and got it back, along with some CSC memorabilia. He still has the broken julich wheel, from which he could still use the cassette and the valve extender, if he ever needs one. It was a good deed and it was rewarded in good measure to the deed. If Bobby J trashed the hank-wheel, sure, it needs to be replaced with a new one...but he didn't..it wasn't. It's a fine story, and say thanks to the bobby J. for the extra stuff.

i personaly agree with myself and that is that it seems kinda weak for csc to only send back Hanks' wheel. they are a world renowned pro cycling team and Hank helped the entire team out (and not to mention was put out for the day) and all they did was send him his wheel back and with the normal stuff that is tossed out at rallies and such? not cool in my opinion, he deserves a lot more and I'd be willing to send money for a new wheelset for Hank seeing as how csc are too cheap and inconsiderate to do so and they get them for free. good gawd, I was almost ready to join their fanclub but am now afraid of what my $60 to join would get me, i'm thinking a pushpin if I were to be lucky.

Even protour teams aren't exactly made of money you know, especially in the current climate. They don't get unlimited free wheels either. The OP is happy with what he got and he's the only one who really matters in all this. Why exactly do you think he needs a new wheelset? Ultimately he lent someone a wheel for god's sake...maybe next time I lend someone a wheel you can start a collection to get me some new zipps...

Story of the year so far plus some signed swag plus the busted zipp plus a chat with bobby j plus his wheel back doesn't seem to be quite the kick in the teeth you're making it out to be.

funny, he had to track them down, not the other way around. inconsiderate and ungrateful of csc. a kick to the you know what is more like it.

pros have access many more times the average joe like myself ever could to all things cycling, I just think that they could have done more, much more in their showing of appreciation, a pair of shoes or a gift certificate for something useful.

in my opinion they sent him toilet paper, nothing more.

and btw, I'm only debating, not trying to get on anyones bad side.

You are right, the pros don't have that much stuff floating around, or stuff they can just give away. Neither do the manufacturers.
I think it was great that Hank helped Bobby out, got a fantastic story and experience out of it, and can feel good that he helped "someone" out.

My thought in general is that if I help someone out, I do that because I want to help out and not because I am expecting a return of sorts.

Bingo.

It's called Paying it Forward and people do not do enough of it IMHO. Hank helped Bobby J out not because he expected something in return, but because it was the right thing to do at that moment. That he has a legendary story to tell and got some pretty sweet CSC schwag (Uh, hello a 404 and the word TT champs autograph) is icing on the cake.

On why we, sometimes, help others:
Five decades of social psychological research has shown that the prime reason for helping is not because of our good nature, but most likely because of the situation we are in. For what it's worth: If you want to be helped, ask for it, just like BJ (oops, let's call him Bobby, initials don't work) did. That one of the best situational circumstances for the potential helper to get convinced it's time to show his/her "good nature".

This does not mean the Hank Rearden is not a good person, neither does it mean he can't feel good about what he did.

Anyway, nice story.

Thanks again for sharing your story. I saw your child so may I be so bold as to offer a suggestion. Document all of this stuff in a professional or formatted way (e.g. a scrapbook, etc.), especially your post on Slowtwitch, the photos of the wheel, etc. Put a storyline together of the key events, number of posts, etc. and even consider making a DVD of you telling the story and showing the wheel. That way when you child (or ren if more) have show and tell.....they ROCK! Next year or at another event if you get the wheel signed and photo with Bobby, add it to the end of the chapter. By the way you wrote your post to us, think of it you wrote that from the perspective of dad telling kid(s) what happened on that day and the lessons they could learn from that....then let us know when Oprah calls :) Again, thanks for sharing and I was really impressed by the photos that people sent to you.

Just for you, here's a list of CSC's sponsors and what they "should" have contributed:

CSC: I'm sure they could find a computer or something
Cervelo: a P4C obviously
ALM: they're a financial institution so how about some cash
Skoda: a car, and seeing as they're part of VAG how about not just handing over a crappy Skoda but a Bentley or Lambo
instead
Sidi: a pair of bike shoes in every size
Craft: a full team kit for each day of the year
SIS: a year's supply of supplements
Bell: helmets
Zipp: wheels, and make sure they have ceramic bearings you cheapskates
Oakley: glasses
Speedplay: ti pedals
SRM: throw a couple in for luck

I could go on but I'm getting bored. Let me know if this still falls short of your expectations. And be sure to use that "would've liked to see a better ending" line next time you get a massage...

well i'm sorry for having an opinion on something contrary to yours. :-) and I didn't mean to ruin anything, it just bugs me.

and on to another point:

If CSC or Zipp won't step up, I think this would be of significant interest to SHIMANO, who made the guy's wheel. They should be interested in advertising that their wheel saved the day for a major racer on a major team in the biggest U.S. stage race, when the racer's own wheel didn't stand up to a pro-racer's needs. That would be a significant advertising story for Shimano, especially now that apparently the whole cycling industry and fanbase knows the story is real. I'm surprised someone from Shimano hasn't contacted him.
That's a good angle!

the above is not my own statement but a good point.

Thank you for the help, I was drowning here in the tri forum quite desperately there for a second. :-)

The only one who is falling short in my opinion BESIDES an ungrateful Bobby J. is yourself. What would you have done in your appreciation if you had the means to hook someone up that saved your race? Your entire teams race?

Before you go out of your way to try and insult me, make sure you really know me, boy.

My apologies to Hank and all but Azz Ben for this interuption into yeah, what otherwise would've been a continuously nice and decent thread. Ben, if in Houston, look me up and bring your best bike, I'll show you how to use it.

Geez, where to start...

an ungrateful Bobby J.

I still don't get this argument, they sent some swag that the OP was quite happy with. Sorry it falls short of the 100 vestal virgins you were hoping for but you obviously have ridiculous and unrealistic expectations. This may be because you don't know a thing about pro cycling.

that saved your race. Your entire teams race?

Ah yes, that 26th overall is, I'm sure, the highlight of Mr Jullich's career and CSC's season

Before you go out of your way to try and insult me, make sure you really know me, boy.

I don't wish to know you, you're a little obtuse for my taste

if in Houston, look me up and bring your best bike, I'll show you how to use it.

I'll pass thanks. Let me know if you move anywhere civilized.

Without a doubt, this where the thread started to derail. First with this post, then with Katy's reply.

What's with all the attitude slinging around here? It seems like everyone is on an extremely short fuse and looking for a fight. Hank had a great story; this thread didn't start out as, nor should it evolve into, a discussion on what schwag is appropriate thanks from a pro rider for outside assistance. If you want to start down that like of off-topic ranting, start your own thread.

/not my first post.

After a long delay, I finally decided what to do with the busted up Zipp 404. I received a few suggestions from keeping the wheel intact to sending it in to Zipp for a replacement. In the end I went with the "middle" ground. I contacted Zipp directly and linked in this thread to check out my options. They told me that they would allow the Zipp crash replacement policy on the wheel and more importantly would allow me to just send in the Hub. I chose to upgrade to the 1080 Clincher (don't derail the thread) for what I felt was a low price. Thank you Zipp.

My son saying: "Daddy, I love your new fast wheel"

I'm not sure if my scale is accurate:

On bike:

I got in two rides on the wheel this weekend... My review is that it is the Stealth Bomber of rear wheels. Rigged for Silent Running captain. Why give someone the opportunity to accelerate when you are going to pass them?

Ultimately I want to suspend a picture in a plain glass frame in the middle of the busted up rim and I'm hoping Julich will stay around in the peloton for one more year so I can get his signature at the ToC next year.

Thanks for the follow up!

That is one of the first 1080 clinchers that I have seen. Very nice looking indeed.

I am curious about the weight though as that is more than my Renn clincher disc 1225g on my scale)!

Thanks for the update. I was just wondering last week what happened to this story.

If you didn't mind my asking but how much? If I understand correctly, you would of gotten a 404 for free but paid for the upgrade to a 1080?

Basically you traded in your trainer wheel + some cash for a brand new 1080... That's awesome.

That is AWESOME that you kept the wheel and Zipp did the crash replacement with the hub. With them knowing the details and still following up on that is a great thing for their brand in this market.

I so wanted Julich to tell that story when he was on the Cyclingnews commentary during the TdF.

Again, thanks for the follow up. Hopefully when ToC comes around, if Julich is still there I think the guys and Zipp might be able to help arrange a meeting/photo op with you and Julich. This kind of good stuff does not come along very often but lives for a long, long time.

Thanks for the update and what fun story to tell your kids and grand kids.

I'm curious about the weight as well... I will wait for someone with a qualified scale to test it. I was suprised by what it read, so I re-zeroed it and tried it again to the same effect.

I was given the standard option to use the Zipp Crash replacement policy, which is good for anyone who owns a Zipp wheel that is less than 5 years old. The policy has different prices for different wheels. The 808 and 1080 were ~$360 + $65 (wheel build) + spokes. I chose the 1080 which came to $450 total ( a 404 would have been less). I think that anyone can "trade up" their busted up wheels for a deeper wheel. Which got me thinking....

I got my trainer wheel back, so when all is said and done I got a new 1080 (retail $1350) with Julich's hub and cassette for $450. The icing is that I get to keep the busted 404 rim.

I made it to stage 2 today... Total deluge on Tunitas Creek. Skipped down to Santa Cruz for the finish. We watched Levi grab gold and went over to the team bus area.

Mission: Julich Signing.

We spotted him at the finish of Stage one, but it was raining too hard to carry the photos or wheel.

Watched all the Saxo riders ditch their bikes and run into the team bus.

Finally found Julich and my brother managed to get a few photos...
"Excuse me, can I borrow a second of your time..."
"well..."
"I have your wheel from last year."
"Oh.... Your that guy!, the red jersey"

Had a nice conversation... Julich appears to be very happy right now to not be in the Peloton with all the rain.

Final tally: One rim with Julich and Riis's signature and two photos of my wheel signed.

Mission Accomplished.

Story Fini.

An awesome story and what a great finish to it w/the circle completed at this year's ToC.

Kudos to you, Bobby, and Zipp. The best story I've read on ST ever (OK, I haven't been on very long - but I believe the bar has been set high). Thanks for sharing!

Hank: Great story. Moral of the story. Pay it forward. It was cool how you expected nothing and were happy with what ever it was you recieved. In the end you finished on top with a great story.

I saw a story on-line it was a "rules of the road type thing" guide lines for being a good cyclest. One of the rules was. Always ask stoped riders on the side of the road if they are ok/need anything. The other was if someone is broke down and need's your spare tube you give it to them and NEVER take money for it.

BTW NICE 1080

Just got back from Sierra Rd. Holy Sh***t. I think there is a permanent storm cloud following the peloton. It wasn't bad on the climb up, but 10 min before they arrived the heavens and the wind opened up. I have video, but it's all jittery because my arm is shaking.

Hank,

The thing that's been bothering me is wondering how much trouble he had slapping a 9-speed wheel on there? (well, not putting it on, but racing it subsequently). I've done this and a few gears line up and a few don't.

Obviously it got him there OK though.

My guess is that it would work reasonably well for the gears at the edge of the cassette (12, 13, maybe 14) and the derailleur would skip towards the middle. Looking at the following photos, it looks like he is in the 13 or 14. He didn't have any problem catching and pulling with the astana rider. The Astana rider looks like he is slightly higher, 15? Just Guessing.
