Nice list. I remember and have lived it all.

Sock Racers - best racing flat that Nike ever made. They only lasted for about 4 - 5 races - It was best if you were sponsored :) - but if these things fit your feet, it was like racing barefoot, but with the perfect amount of padding.

don't have a pic of the seat shifter but it's something that connected to your seat and allowed you to ride ether very steep or very shallow with a flip of a knob that connected to your handlebars. I never used one and frankly didn't see a whole lot of use but some very fast people did use them. I believe Mike Pigg did.

That is scary photo of me.

I will take you farther back with a few that I am sure Slowman and Monty and very few others will know or remember:

When they moved Ironman from Oahu to Kona (I believe it was 1981)

or
When they shortened the USTS run from 15K to 10K (1983-1984)

or
When they had moved Ironman from February to October (1982) to give those that did not live in San Diego the entire summer to train for it. There were two Ironman races that year.

or
When I showed up at Ironman 1983 with purple hair

or
When Wildflower was an art Festival that included a triathlon and you could sign up the morning of the race

or
When they did not permit wetuits at the Escape from Alcatraz (I did it twice without it)

or
The Monterey Bay Half Ironman distance race

or
The Ricoh Ironman held in Santa Monica in the spring of 1984. It was the first Ironman (TM) race outside of Kona.

or
The World Wildlife Fund Ironman distance race held in Manhattan Beach in August of 1983 with a huge prize purse, won by Tom Brady.

or
The Kauai Loves You Triathlon (1984) that was swim, run, bike, and all entrants got a Pink T-Shirt that had a cow with an egret on her back.

or
Forte Clothing

or
When they weighed you at the half way point of Ironman.

or
When Monty and Kim Bushong raced Ironman in leopard print trisuits.

or
The very first pro triathlon race, the Malibu Triathlon (self proclaimed) National Championships in October 1982, where they pulled 1/3 of the field out of the surf with hypothermia, won by Ferdy Massomino.

or THE HUMAN RACE Triathlon in Newport Beach that started with a 25 criterium style draft legal race, followed by a 10K run, followed by a 1000m swim.

I was watching sport on TV last year and on came a road race somewhere in the NE US, and the Puntos twins appeared on the screen! Took me back to a race I did in Milton Ontario years ago and they were there. Based on how old they looked, I realized I'm pretty old now too. :-(

I have an original Timex IM watch. Orange and black, 8 laps. I now have it mounted on my wall, in a museum quality shadow frame, with my first IM finish time engraved on the back. It looks funny now, beside my wifes great grandmothers watch in a similar frame, particularly since the antique watch (pocket watch style) has a retaining strap made of intricately braided hair, my wifes great grandmothers hair in fact! (it was a craft thing ladies did in the evening, in place of needlepoint apparently) Sure my watch looks kind of pathetic beside that, but in 100 years, how many original Timex IM watches will still be around?

I also have an original steel QR tribike (650 of course) that I'm restoring for posterity too (complete with 8speed Gripshifters! :-)

rtk,

Are you, me, Tricia and QRman (aka slowman) the only ones that still remember RST?

RST is how we met. My daughter occassionally wears the T-Shirt you brought her back from Kona years ago. All the boys pay attention because it fits very revealingly. Who would have thought a fashion horse like her would still wear a 11 year old shirt, especially when she's only 19 now!

I never got any rst gear, but I still have a QR racing singlet (also DSS) that I bring out when I do 'retro' races that pop up here from time to time. My fat guts hanging out highlights the reason why crop tops thankfully died a natural death (except for the fas guys) long ago. My flouro Tinley tri shorts get dragged out to finish the ensemble.

I almost bought a Slingshot, but ended up with my first QR. Slingshots were waaaaaay cool!

The willingness to experiment in the early days of triathlon was fantastic. Everyone trying to find out a faster way, while cyclists looked down their noses at us....then adopting just about every one of our great ideas!

Kiwi's were famous for causing the advent of the "no-nudity in transition" rules.

In fact, at a local 1/2 IM race here in NZ, the race director still activley and publicly encourages nudity in transition atthe race briefing, and quite often has good prizes for women that do the 'full monty'! He also has prizes for those that complete the "4th event" after the half IM. (You have to be able to convince your partner to go up on stage to corroborate the claim) That competition is so popular now, he has had to introdude a Masters Division.

Gotta love Hooksie. Man after my own heart :-)

you did not have to wear a hard shell helmet at Ironman,
the shorter distance LA Ironman that finished on the Santa Monica pier,
the top pro's showed up at any race where there was any money,

For the Chicago triathlons in the 1980s we were required to get our bikes certified for safety at a LBS before the races and get a safety sticker to put on the bike. The LBS hassled me because I wanted to do my first Chicago Triathlon on my 10 speed K-mart bike. What BS.
I still have my plastic yellow J-disc and my orange and blue Bodyglove wetsuit which was made of some non-rubber material. Ah, the good old days.

Those 6-7 beers tasted great. Even back then before the Internet I knew how important proper hydration was post-race. I started thinking about the finish line beers at about 4 miles into the run. Great motivation.

I had that sign from Cleveland for a long time

"drafting IT sUcks" was what it said.

I stole that from the back of Peter Reids shirt at a 1/2 IM in Collingwood Ontario in about '94 I think.

Les McDonald had his security team chasing me most of the day. I got right behind him for one of his TV interviews! Good fun. Got the sign into the finish line photos in '96 when Simon Lessing won. Had to dash to get away. Had to dash away again when I was perched atop a nearby statue with it and Clevelands finest came after me. Luckily being short, I was able to scurry away in the crowd at the finish line.

A few years ago at IMNZ, someone stole it. I should make another one...bigger this time, just to remind IMNZ competitors to stay draft legal.

Peggy, when you coming back south again?

Hi Nick,

I had those Sock Racer's until a few years ago, ran my fastest IM marathon that day, a 3:12 I think.
No Socks,
no watch,
no hat,
no runs in training over 13 miles.
Just water, Coke, a speedo, a singlet and some Pink and white Oakleys (Blades on the run, Used the Factory Pilots on the bike).

Oh, and 4 or 5 beers with the Budweiser Canada guys at the finishline, beats the heck out of going off to the doping control.

Priceless!

Two notes down you say you just got two new neoprene (of course not lycra) seat covers. I didn't know they were still available. They are perfect and I'll find where to get them and get more.

1) Scott 100K bars
2) Specialized Sub-6 helmets that were truly sub-6 ounces (foam only- no outer plastic)
3) The Original Giro long-tailed aero helmet
4) Modolo Kronos components made of carbon fibre
5) Campy Delta brakes
6) KHS aero turbo frames mades of True Temper aero velo steel tubing (and had the seat tube curving around the rear while LONG before a certain popular tri bike)
7) Huffy road bikes that were high-end (one even made it on the cover of Triathlete magazine)
8) Original white Look pedals, with cleats that had the float adjustment kits
9) funnybikes
10) Raleigh Technium
12) Nishiki was somewhat popular at one time
13) Sun Mistral rims
14) Zipp 3000 tri spokes
15) Specialized tri spokes that were heavy as hell and cost an unspeakable amount of money
16) Sweet Wings cranks and stems (I had both)
17) Cannondale 2.8
18) Tinley wear in flourescent colours
19) That funky-ass behind the seat water bottle system
20) Christophe toe straps- the still-preferred method of carrying spare tubulars; yes, they were on my Campy Record toe-clip pedals.

and one last one:
21) The original Zipp disc that weighed a ton, and it was still lighter than anything Hed had put out at that time

I could probably list 100 weird old retro items from the birth of tri (and before), but I haven't had my morning cuppa yet.

- Kestrel 4000 - carbon fiber! Mick Taylor rode the first one I ever saw.

-Hamilton Satui bikes with 24" wheels - PNF

- Bikestreams: rubber bladders that you pumped full of fluids. A hose ran from behind the saddle to your handlebars and you bit on the end of the hose to release the fluids. Besides the difficulty in actually pumping up the bladder, the nozzle had a tendency to jam open spraying you with fluids.

- Oakley Factory Pilots - reminded of these every time I look in the mirror. Had a nasty bike crash and face-planted on the pavement. The outline of the Factory Pilot frame is still visible as a scar on my right cheekbone.

- Changing attire between Swim and bike and even bike and run. The first time I saw someone do an entire race in a speedo was a revelation (Rich Brown). Of course, rules didn't require 'covered torso' back then either. Nike came out with a one-piece trisuit and InSport Dave Scott came out with a padded (mini-chamois) speedo and transition times improved dramatically.

- Leppin Squezzies - first gel that I ever used.

It is actually amazing what a large-sized manufacturer will have lying around after a product is discontinued, especially if a celebrity endorser prefers the product. I can site a few examples of what a manufacturer *could* have lying around; but if I am too public about it, I won't get a crack at future deals.

Lance was one guy, so it is feasible for Shimano to have supplied him with obsolete stock for as long as they did. I imagine there was at least one prototype pedal sent to him yearly along with the Shimano Look pedal. Also, the R&D department could easily remanufacture the pedal...

I got rid of my ShimanOOK pedals when I tried Keywins.

I remember that guy back around 1990/1991. He was a pretty fast runner. His was the only Trimble that I actually remember seeing "live". I was a rookie in the sport then and thought that a Trimble with a J disk would have been the coolest thing going.

Remember that carbon disk cover that I had. Some small company based in Elmira I think. I can't remeber the name of it but they had a big exclamation mark on the side and would be a nice option to put on some of todays wheels to make them go fast.

I have a couple gift certificates for those wheel covers from Elmira. Cannot recall the company name.

What was the name of the magnesium-framed bike that looked vaguely similar to a Trek Y-frame?

- aerolite clipless pedals. Scott Tinley ued these in his pre-aerobar Hawaii assault complete with a Vision Tech-like carbon base bar with significant drop, shoe booties, aero helmet, etc...1985? Didn't he buy a crate full of these pedals after they went out of business?

I was riding with a friend who was using his front race wheel with fiber flite spokes - a J Disc mylar deep rim. We went around a corner where there was a bit of loose gravel and my tire flipped up a pebble that hit one of his spokes. A very loud snap echoed and, sure enough, the pebble had shattered his spoke. He sent it back to J Disc for repair and, 15 yrs later, is still waiting for the wheel to be returned.

Yeah, those things would wear out and turn grey on top. Of course you could then stick on the self-adhesive neoprene seat pad for riding "steep" that used to be cool.

Also, can't forget to mention wearing anything neon and still being cool.

Ruth,

1) I'm well over 19, although in my minds eye I'm still there. My multitude of past ski and cycling injuries, my arthritis, and my recent heart issues all conspire to remind me daily, of my advancing years.

2) My daugher IS 19 however. So georgeous that I wonder daily what ugly kid her real parents got by mistake. Wonderful kid. Decidedly average in so many ways that she is nearly perfect....if she would just tidy her room :-)

3) QR seat covers are still available! I got some just a couple of weeks ago. The last few times I've got them, the Mr Flitie hasn't been available, so I've had to go with the Mr Softie and cut to fit my saddle, glue and stitch myself. Takes about 30 minutes once you've done it a few times:-) I get mine from either Nytro (a few years ago) or most recently Colorado Cyclist.

4) I still use my original QR twinkletoes too. I have some other brand of whole shoe cover for cold days, but the Twinkletoes are great for early starts on chilly mornings, without causing overheating later in the morning after the sun comes up.

Glad to hear you're still cruising the tri chat scene. Are you still racing?

If you can call it racing, yes. I've been doing sprints for the last 7 years, following a bit of calamity. This year I said To hell with calamaties or some such little phrase and I entered nationals. My swimming is just fine, I manage to stay vertical on the bike, and I leave transition 2 in style, that is to say sorta running, and I'll make sure I return that way. No one will know I was hobbling in between. I am in one piece and feeling great, but I had to defy a few odds to do it.

Of course I still use my QR twinkletoes. I went to the QR site to order the seat cover, but the site was really a mess of clever and useless methods for ordering. Invisible writing and such. So I ordered 2 from DeSoto and while I was on his page splurged on 110 buck shorts.

Last December I proved one of my favourite sayings

"You can do a 1/2IM on no training"

I also proved that you cannot do a 1/2 IM WELL on no training. Managed a personal worst, but like my previous personal worst race, I had a blast, making new friends, encouraging other non-trainers and cajoling friends while they headed to the finish line while I was still heading for the turn-around.

I am actually doing longer and longer stuff as I get older. That short stuff just hurts too much. I just can't force myself to suffer at high intensity and high heartrates (that my cardiologist has banned me from anyway), but I can chug along for a long long time without too much problem.

Good luck racing this season. I just had my first really cold ride to work after a wonderfully long, warm autumn. At least there wasn't a cloud in the sky,it was just pretty chilly.

I remember wondering why I had to get the size 52 to have it feel "right" when in the aero position (my normal road bike size is 54)...just a few years later I discovered QR and Dan's perspective on aero bikes...then I knew why...

Anyway...I had pink bar tape and a white turbo saddle on that rig...very LOUD...

Remember in the mid-80's just dropping trou and changing in T1? Back then there were no "no-nudity" rules. I remember my GF at the time came to a race and couldn't stop talking about it afterward.

I not only remember most of this stuff, I still have a lot of it. I still do sprints on my Kestrel 4000 with Scott Clip-ons, J-Disc, 7-speed GripShift (I still like it much better than bar-ends). Also on there is a Suburban Machinery forward Titanium seatpost. Anyone remember those?

I also have a SeatShifter that is on my trainer bike that I am on all the time. Picked it up for 10 bucks at a swap meet a few years back and it still works perfectly. Those goofy things cost like $175 when they came out or I might have tried one back then.

I still have one of the Jetstream drinking systems also - haven't used that in a while, but it was pretty cool. 48 oz in a bladder that started out the size of an egg. I think I stopped using it after the race where I went over some tracks and the tube came loose and Gatorade exploded all over me and my bike and it took me forever to clean up the bike - all in the gears and everything.

I also still have a pair of the Arc Bars on my trainer bike. These were the first clip on aerobar ever made I believe - Ken Glah rode them for years and used to endorse them.

I also have one of those contraptions that was out for a few years that looks like a sissy bar on a kids bike. Anyone remember what that thing was called? It mounted on the back of your saddle and the idea was you could get way back in the saddle going uphills and push back as hard as you could and it held you in the seat. I don't think I ever raced with that one - looked too damn goofy, but I still have it downstairs with all the other old gizmos.

Shit I'm old.

I don't like to say it, but when I started out cycling in the early 80's we did not wear helmets when training. It was only in triathlon races that we wore helmets. This was the case with me up until, I am guessing some time in the mid to late 80's when the helmets had evolved beyond the Skid Lid and the Bell V1 Pro and I started wearing a helmet full time. I am loath to admit it but there was something very cool and liberating about riding down the road with the wind blowing in your hair. I would never do this today, and I always wear a helmet no matter what type of riding I am doing - even riding the beater bike to the store to pick up some milk and a loaf of bread.

I have fond memories living in Clearbrook , hammering down the street on my ten speed with foamie handle-bars coming back from the store. There was a feeling of being free and "one with the earth" when the wind is blowing through your hair.

Something I cringe at today. Thank god I never wiped out.

I don't even get on my bike without putting on a helmet.

Some of my best memories from RST:
- RST get-togethers before a race (USTS in Acworth, GA was one I helped organize)

I made my first visit the US in 1981, and bought a pair of Nike Lava Domes, which were the precursor of contemporary trail shoes (*) I did so having already worn a couple of pairs of Welchs, the quintessential UK fell running shoe (which by the early 2000 could be seen in the windows of fashionable shoes stores in Firenze, I kid you not). Trail shoes were definitely in place for the early history of this sport, but nobody wore them.

(*) Nike's ad campaign for these involved mentioning a couple of summits that had been conquered in their existing running shoes and saying "we think thats cool, but we'd rather offer you a pair of shoes that are actually meant for that kind of thing"

Aerosports - they made one of the earliest carbon bars. In fact, I have the Aerosport carbon pursuit bard on my indoor trainer bike, a Nishiki Triathron (yup, that is how it is spelled). The bike also has a 'Torque Platform' forward seatpost gadget - mounts between the top of the seatpost and the saddle to move the seat angle forward by a few degrees.

  1. Hawaii Ironman and Ironman Canada were the only ironman races
  2. Almost all the best in the sport had mustaches (except the women)
  3. Zofinger, Nice and the Desert Princess were premier events
  4. "Biathlons" were popular and there was a friendly rivalry between triathletes and biathletes.
  5. You remember the name change from Biathlon to Duathlon.
  6. Triathletes put Zofinger on their race calender.

Digging deeper into the esoteric & weird tri-memory:
1. Team J-David.
2. Pioneer Tri Team
3. 1985 Ironman Tinley w/aero shoe covers & full aero gear vs Chris Hinshaw in cutoff Tshirt fresh from the fields of IL.
4. Djan Madruga
5. Lisa Lahti--maybe the hottest female triathlete ever.
6. Exceed Energy Drink---still have 4-5 gallons that expired in the early 90s that still work quite well.
7. Leon's Q.E.M. Energy Mix. It was pink. Great triathlon though.
8. The original Dura Ace 6 speed index system.
9. Gallie/Campagnolo anondized components.
10. Drilled brake levers, chainrings, shifters---it was all about weight.
11. 1982-1984 Dura Ace Aero---ahead of its time.
12. Campagnolo clipless pedals---shiniest 1 1/2lb hunks of metal on the market.
13. Zipp carbon frames---still popular & faster than just about anything currently produced.

And some strong names from the midwest scene: Brian Boggs, Michael Smith, Jay Allardt.

It was just much simpler then.

101. Being the first one in upstate NY with aero bars and being told by pro bike racers that it is a piece of crap and a fad.

102. Doing Lake Placid and getting hypothermia because there was no such thing as wetsuits for triathlons.

What a great freakin' thread.

Did my first tri in '87 and remember a lot of this. 1990 was the embodiment of the cliches--at Wildflower, rode my 24 pound PINK and Grey Nishiki International to my best ever bike split complete with Uni-disc, Scott DH bars, and Tri Fit top. Did the run in Nike air sock trainers which I continued to use on race days for a few more years. Even had a convo with Lisa Lahti while getting a post-race massage.
Back then the massage lines weren't so ridiculous and they were free.

Later "upgraded" to grip shift and the j-disc wheel. Since then my bike is nearly 10lbs lighter but that split is still 30 sec faster.

Fond memories as well of those amazing women, esp Jan Ripple, Lisa Lahti, Colleen Cannon, Kristen Hansen. Awe for Dave Scott, Scott Tinley, Jimmy Riccetello, that punk kid Lance, and stud Mike Pigg. Goddamn Pigg was amazing; he avgd 3mph faster on the bike than any one else at the San Jose budlight.

And how f'ing cool was it that Bud Light and Coors Light sponsored for so many years? Truly the golden age.
The thing I miss most though: World's Toughest Triathlon in Lake Tahoe '91, complete with Cowman for color.

Amazing that so much has passed!

Kind of a bar, but more a resturante..It was called the Kona Bar and Grill. Really great food and the look of many of the seafood Kona hangouts. Had many a party at that place. Not sure what happened, could have been the collapse of JDavid or just the wrong business at the wrong time...

My first Road Bike was a Peugeot PKN 10. Gave it to my brother 20 years ago, who has it sitting outside a shed in his back yard all rusted and ugly. Probably ought to buy it back and put it in a museum!

First MTB was a 1982 or 1983 Fisher Montare, weighed about 32lbs. but with a 69 deg. head angle was almost a full on DH bike. Sold it to some poor College student for $250 then promplty the check bounced. Also, ought to have been kept as a museum piece. One of the very first production MTB's. Man did I thrash that thing. It was bombproof.

They are still here in north county. They have moved their competitive outlets into paddleboard racing where they are kicking ass in the 'old fart' division. Still pretty fit guys and the same characters they were in the 70's. As a reminder, they both raced the Fiesta Island race in 1974 won by my college grad adviser Bill Phillips.

"You bought Adidas SL72's, the best (training) shoe ever?"
- - I can't find the site (been looking for over an hour). As I recall it was in S. America somewhere and they apparently still make the shoe there? Don't know, but they had a s**tload of them in every size and color.
Bad news is that they're nowhere near what I remember, so I've now moved on to the Vibram 5-fingers. Now THOSE are cool. I was interested in the SL72s as a minimalist shoe, but the 5-fingers redefine the concept of minimalism. I'm hoping to run barefoot once the weather gets better, but my legs have to learn how to run all over again. I'm amazed, because I've been a midfoot striker since forever and it took me zero days to adjust to the pair of Newtons I bought but my first run in the 5s about killed me. Running shoeless recruits a lot of lower leg muscles that have been sleepin' on the job for years...
Anyway, the SL72s were a major disappointment. After less than 50 miles of wear, I donated them.

I had those Sampson pedals. Actually, they were amazingly light. But when the cleats failed, you were screwed.
It's cool that he's still in business, though, still trying to innovate.

Amazing also how gripshifts have now become the mighty SRAM company. But bummer that Sugino, Suntour, and Centurion are all gone. And Nishiki has left the US.

When you remember that most races were not even swim, bike, run yet.
When in many races you had your own car drive along with you for your support, no aid stations yet.
THere was no olymipc/international distance
When everyone changed clothes for each sport(except me)
When everyone tied their shoes(except me again)
When only Dave Horning and I had what you would call a tri suit
When Kenny Souza was fresh out of high school and doing his first ever bike ride(with me of course)
When the biggest races gave out steak dinners and elaborate trophies for the winners
When Scott Molina, Scott Tinley, Mark ALlen, Dave Scott, and most all of us still had day jobs
When you went to some strange Island with almost no one on it, and did some crazy race called the International Triathlon for the first time since it was moved from Ohau. And you remember it being called the Nautilus Triathlon before that....

The Sally Edwards triathlon training book written in the early '80s. It was pretty good. I used it to train for my first tri in '83 (Caesar Creek) and still have a copy.

Ardis Bow - she was included in another book written by Edwards in the '80s that featured the training schedules of Allen, Molina, Tinley, Moss, Hansen, Puntous twins, etc.

How about the Radio Shack radio that you mounted on your handlebars. I never used one in a tri, but I had one when I first started to ride my bike as "training" in '73 or '74. I ran wearing the ear-muff-like radio headphones sold by The Shack in the '70s.

I did and the time line put it right at Lake George where the Pre-Race stuff all took place in the elementary school. Two weeks later and I was down and out big time. I ran a PR in a 5K (With a slight fever)days before it finally came on full blast.

I stopped drinking Coors light because they pulled out! Stopped drinking Bud Light when they pulled out. I hope Sammy A doesen't sponsor a tri series and pull out =0

Did my first Ironman on my Vitus Carbone 9. What a nice ride. Too bad it didn't hold up; started having "phantom" shifting on hills and finally figured out that the seat tube came unglued from the bottom bracket allowing about 3/4" of play every time I stepped on the pedals. Too bad for me I didn't figure that out until after biking IMMOO03 .

on the Air Mariah being the best racing flat ever.

I ran my second marathon in them, barefoot, 5 weeks after IMC and ran a 2:51.....I also set my half marathon PB that day with a 1:19.....I was going for broke or was going to blow up trying (yes, I positive split but sometimes you just give it!!!!)

I used the Air Mariah for every workout and every race for a period of around 3 years. It was a great day in day out shoe and weighed nothing!

I sold a brand new pair a few years ago for $120 to a Japanese buyer. They set up a Hotel room suite as the buy site, and were looking for anything Nike. I happened to have a pair of Mariah's still fresh in the box brand new. Didn't think I'd use them so I off loaded them to these guys for what was probably about a 400% profit. Reality is they are now being worn by some guy in Japan for another 400% probably.

I also still have my very cool "LA Triathlon Series" mesh tank top and a lot of memories of you crushing those local races back then.

Air Mariah's were awesome. No support but for a lightweight runner they were great if no pronation issues. Air Pegasus Racers were pretty awesome too but if they combined those with a seamless interior they'd have a heckuva race flat--alter the lacing system slightly to include elastic laces to adjust on the fly there you have it. I have a "less than a dozen uses" on a pair of Nike Air Ghosts sitting in a box. But kind of a sloppy fit...

I remember our swim coach bought like thirty cases of the stuff when they went out of business (meaning, of course, that the expiry had long passed on all of it), and then we'd mix it in a giant gatorade bucket and leave it poolside until it got drunk. Man, it was funky after three days!

Dev,
I ran under 2:30 in the Miriah. Remember the original had a herring bone sole and after a few runs you had to shoe goo the soles to put extra tread to it.
Remember when the sport was pure and you raced for a beer.
All the races were long
I raced three years before I ever did a sprint and even that was .5 mile swim, 20 mile bike,5 mile run.
I actually did an ironman before I ever did a sprint tri.

Those were fun times how many people can say they were around at the beginning of a sport.

We'd get so many of the early Bill Rodgers suits come back with lamination problems. They always stood behind them and replaced every one of them. They had a better reflectivity than all the other raincoats also. The early ones were very heavy though!!

Ya, I think that who is in the background, Slowman's exwife and Ironman legand. I think she won 4 or 5 Ironmans, got 2nd in Hawaii one year, and won a lot of local CA running races. Funny thing is that she probably got better on the bike than her run, she held several course bike records for a very long time. We will have to ask Dan for sure, but it sure looks like her to me, Oakley was her sponsor, and she did that race in Palm Springs.

Oh ya, for those that do not know who Julieanne is, her last name was White. You will see her all over the old time results..

I can't let this thread die. I've had a blast reading through all the posts and seeing images I only thought still existed in my faded memory...

I had a 1990 Nishiki Altron that I raced up until about 1994. After I graduated from college I got too caught up in career and life in general and the bike sat for many years. Unfortunately I sold it at a bike swap meet in Phoenix in the late 90's. Always wished I would have hung onto it and if anyone knows where it is let me know. I'm trying to post pics, but can't seem to get the photo button to do anything...help.

I worked for a bike shop back then and we were a Nishiki dealer. We had a hell of a time getting one of the first bikes as the wheels were a "no-show" from Tri-Spoke and Derby Cycle kept putting us off in getting the bike shipped. I don't think I ever saw one with those original Tri-Spokes on it and do know for a fact that the bike in the pictures in the Nishiki brochure had wooden wheels on it painted in the neon yellow. In the end our rep finally got one sans wheels and we built up a set of Wolbers to get the bike rolling. Aerospoke came through with a set of 650c tubulars a while later and I swapped the original funky Profile 1 aero bar with a bullhorn and clip-on..

Obviously Kenny Souza rode one of these, but I had heard that he actually had a custom ride built (titanium?) and then they painted it up to look like a Nishiki...anyone know "the rest of the story?"

+1. I just about replied to a 3-year-old post about the Coors Light Biathlon Series.

(Because we really need drunk cross-country skiers out there shooting at stuff with rifles).

I did that race at Angels Stadium - the Ironman Duathlon - and still have the race t-shirt (Gee, maybe it is time to empty the closet, you think?). Besides Jeff Devlin winning, the other thing I remember was Benjamin Paredes' (2nd in the NYC marathon a few years later) coach screaming Arriba! Arriba! at the top of his lungs.

Great pics!

yeah, I did that race too, around Anaheim Stadium and the bike portion through not the best paved streets in town. The age groupers raced ealier and the pros about two hours later. I kinda like that format so you can check out the pro race. They had the Ironman Duathlon the previous year in Anaheim Hills and it was an afternoon race. Lance Armstrong raced that event wearing a Subaru Montgomery race kit. I post pics of that race soon.

I have that T shirt too, in fact I have the race number authographed by Benjamin Paredes.

I also did the Anaheim Hills Ironman Duathlon. I was standing next to Slowman as he was giving splits to Lance (on a QR bike) as he was trying to catch up to a flying Kenny Sousa. LA came up short. Same year, he also came up short at the San Diego Coors Light duathlon against Joel Thompson.

Mainly to bump this thread back up, adding:

- Hind "Tactel" socks. Sublime thin fit that prevented blisters while extremely durable.
- Parachute pants that were prevalent pre- and post-race
- Billabong surfwear that was similarly present
- Neon colored clothing
- Exceed sports drink
- Vaseline (put some under the tip of your saddle and apply to reduce chaffing!)
- "doping" by taking Advil on the bike, jammed in to the power bar on the top tube for easy access
- Everyone waiting around for the award ceremonies where the pros were as patient and thankful as the age groupers
- Pre-race carbo-load dinners which had big turnouts and a great way to meet fellow competitors
and they're support crews.

Heck yeah! That was considered just normal back then.

Standing in the dark at 5:55 am for the 6 am start versus 7 am start at world wildlife ironman 83 torrance beach, yup in a speedo! Dam that was cold and we didnt
even get into the water yet. And yes,,,,I did that Whole race in my green speedo lol Boy we must have looked ridiculous!
Monty was loving that coldness and came out first over bill leach in 56 min!

Course some people like that I remember getting asked out after crossing the line in just a speedo no shirt castiac lake 84.

Riding into the transition area..oh yeah right up to the bar where you placed your bike. How crazy is that!

When you could walk up to a table on race morning with $30 cash less than an hour b/f the mass start swim and listen to a 30 second pre-race meeting while leaning your bike against a Sycamore aka 'bike rack'. The first race I ever did that didn't have race morning sign up was Gulf Coast maybe 89 or 90? It was so bizarre to me to have to be there the day b/f for 'bike check in'. The mech looked at my 30 pound Pinarello rust bucket for 2 seconds, slapped a sticker on the stem and said 'sweet ride dude'.

The seat attached to a piston that you could extend with a lever that was kinda like a mountain bike thumb shifter that mounted on your bars.

It let you switch between riding steep for the aero bars to a more "roadie" position for climbing.

This bike also has the BikeStream hydration behind the seat. Inside the neoprene sock was a latex bladder that you pumped full of fluid (it inflated like a balloon). The pressure from the bladder pushed out the drink when you bit the valve. The only problem was if any part of the system failed your drink started spraying out all over you.

This is cool thanks every one boy some good ones.

When drafting on the bike was illegal and stated in the race brochure but nobody enforced it and only some naive people like me abided by it.

Shifting from toe straps to look clip pedals.

When Budweiser Beer changed its name to Bud Light for sponsor purposes.

When spelling triathlon was hard and often times misspelled on your trophy (Triathalon)!

The famous leapord skin suit worn by Kim Bushong Feb 82 IM (There is a long story about that Im sure monty can explain)

When sometimes the swim was not the first event as in the previous post which did not last long.

When shimano was thought to be cheap (especially when riding with campanolo) but then their parts took off and were considered top notch

Scott Molina being seen eating a cookie 1988 Ironman

The era before the introduction of the disc Wheel

When 18-24 age group was just unfair and some races finally changed from 19-24 to 18 and under or 19 and under.

Sewup Bike tires
Kevlar Bike tires

Introduction to the following bike frames
Carbon fiber frames
Eddy Merckx frames
Merlin Frames
Aluminum Frames

Thanks everyone its fun to hear all the stories, really everyone seems to have something to contribute to this sport
and whether you were around about the time it started or later, the stories are just darn cool!

Here is one-
PS - It would have been cool to make the news being the youngest person in the race at 18 doing so well but not like this -Almost taking myself and the famous David Copperfield out at 45 mph while riding my bike as he stepped in front of me to cheer me on 83 World Wildlife IM. That would have sucked.

Elsa,

Boy thanks for that it brings back something I totally was never able to dig out of my brain, you might enjoy/funny.

Remember when you could purchase a bike carrier when traveling on a flight which was a big card board looking rectangular box!
Then hoping your bike was not a pretzel when you got there.

Ricoh Ironman 83 was not a full distance Ironman but very tough 2m 100m 20m Winner was Scott Molina.

Somebody help me here. I remember in the beginning someone posted a huge triathlon race then ran off with the money...Anybody?

PS - here is one.
Someone posted about Sub 4 gear before. Tks...Brings back the memories of meeting Steve Scott and the great san pedro high/ucla miler Ron Cornell who we trained with sometimes.
(Sub 4 was a sponsored selected group of world class runners who have run under 4 min for the mile)

I recently went back to Bonelli Park San Dimas site of the Orginal and oldest triathlon series in the world (Los Angeles Triathlon Championship Series), when the first race was April 9th 1983 and the park is absolutely wonderful with Raging Waters right next door, fun time.

tks

The ORIGINAL German Ironman Dirk Ashmoneit....

and he is a real obscure one.....does anyone remember the wire cable that was experimented with on the bike. It attached to your a belt and it attached to your stem. The idea was that you could "brace" against it and climb in the seated position better.....

I think Mark Allen might have used it for awhile before discarding it. I made a homemade one and it "felt" like it helped with seated climbing but quit using it when I wasn't sure it helped and worried what would happen if I crashed.

I thought it was introduced originally by some Italian TTT squad at the World Championship, no?

What about BikePro steering stabilizer that attached to your top tube and stem?

Wear-N-Tear's Black Hole front "wheel" system and aero "fins" that attached to the upper arms? And the whole skinsuit that had a "wing" from the end of the sleeve to the waist?

Used to be a lot easier to pass off a bike as 'presentation materials' or 'sporting goods'. Nowadays, hundreds of people show up in the airport wearing M-Dot gear head to toe, not so much :)

I did the US Continental race in 91 or 92. It was Ironman length and there were maybe 30 finishers. After the race, I walked up to Fletcher and said "could you tell me where the massage table is?" (it was advertised in his flyer). He called his (assumed) wife over - she was even older than Fletcher. I passed on the massage.

Pre chip timing....

I was the first RD to use it in a Triathlon...boy that was crazy! //

I believe we at the Los Angeles triathlon series were the first to use chip timing in the mid 80's. My partners son worked for Cisco and had the first hand held computers that we used to do our timing. (and his name was Chip) (-;

Yeah, the Italians use a tether in '87

I think Mark used one at the '87 IM as well (made by HED IIRC).

Man this is neat.

Tim Demerly?

Thanks everyone for your comments good stuff.

Monty,Emilio Everyone, I have to post this and after I promise to keep it short with the subject but this has to be said.

I gotta mention you guys cause you were the ones that influenced me as a teenager to stick with it. Monty this ones for you - I got into the sport Nov 82 but before that I
saw you and Bill Leach on a Black and White TV in my room racing I believe Santa Barbara (not sure) and sure enough your Bicycle Source Shirt Appeared on TV. After seeing you guys Swim
in cold ocean then race on bikes then run I was hooked. Shortly after that I believe I did the Carson Tri 82 and there again was the Bicycle Source Shirt which you were wearing while running, you won
beating Dave Wilcox by two min and I still have the picture of all us that won awards and the rest is history with the championship series Bonelli April May 83 then World Wildlife Ironman and so on.
I honestly believe completely that I would have not tried that triathlon in 82 had it not been for catching the fever and the rest of my career and all the things I learned, experienced, saw, felt, smelled, heard
would have never happened. It allowed me one thing in life to realize, that nothing, I mean NOTHING, is too tough that you cannot endure whether in the military or in ANY situation. TKS.

? Is it true you were a Cat 1 Cyclist? I always new you were at least a Cat 2 but remember reading something in an article.

Emilio - Man good to hear from you. I saw your presentation about buisness at santa barabara a while back and I found your story about comming to america very inspiring.
World Wildlife 83 we rode together for awhile. Man what a race, riding over the Vincent Thomas Bridge, how cool is that! Hey remember Tom? Remember Palm Springs 85 where you beat
Tom, Chris Geyer and Me. I remember you saying to us that Tom could back stroke the swim and still be 2 min ahead of everyone lol. Telly Savalas was there chearing on someone I almost
hit him head on while on the bike, he was driving his green convertible caddie in the wrong lane...Another wonderful news story that would have sucked.
I never knew about your Team J David invite which is pretty cool.

You guys are most assured pioneers in this sport and it is always great when you comment stuff and stories. We should Archive it in a great big TRI Vault. What we should do is get together anybody who
wants to at the next Tri Series Race I think in May, have the competitors take off their wet suits and then we can sit back and watch everyone freeze.

Tks to everyone for the post alot of interesting things about gear inventions and if you ask me a triathlete is a different beast. He/She will find a way to make something better or help someone
else in the sport who is struggling. It is no surprise that triathletes changed the way cyclist view aerodynamics!

Sweet ride! Your bike's Scott DH bars have the requisite upgrade to 2nd gen arm rests to replace the original DH foam sleeve that didn't offer much cushioning and split apart after minimal use. I can't tell but the seat looks really far forward - does the seatpost also have a Torque Platform to move the seat clamp forward for a steeper position?

- Great spot on the DH bars. Those original arm rests were terrible.
- Seatpost was from, I think, Nytro Sport or the precursor to them. It was a zero offset post so you could slam the seat pretty far forward. Aluminum tube wrapped in carbon.
BTW, the blue "bar tape" is actually tennis racquet wrap!
The front wheel was a Performance 28 bladed spoke job.

Sweet. I rocked a pair of Scott DH bars on my Centurion bike as I raced many of the USTS events in my split neon shorts (I forget what the shorts were called - but after races, they would have hot legs contests - very odd scene back in the late 80s).

Pierogies !! I completely forgot about Mrs. T's. Kudos on the Pyro Platforms also! Our 80's timeline overlapped I'm sure. I want to say '87 or '88?

My list is:

1) I was the coolest kid with my Trimble Aero bike, and aluminum skinned disc
2) Transitions where you could ride right up to your rack, no stinking dismount line
3) Still using regular laces for T2 and remembering how long that seemed to take
4) Used a tub of water to wash off the feet after the Swim in at T1
5) Think I still have my Scott DH bars somewhere at my parents house
6) Remember when steep seat tube angles of 90 deg. were fooled with curved seat post
7) Machined (i.e. flat) brake surface was new stuff.

Also remember switching to Look clipless pedals, AND this CRAZY newfangled index shifting?! Started with friction shift on the down tubes where you could change gears in silence so your competition couldn't hear when you were 'making your move'. Or that was the excuse to not go with indexing.

Ah, the memories! Good thread! Lets us all show our age.

Good one! Thanks for resurrecting this thread.

I bet you I could have ridden sub 2:40 at Wildflower on that bike with my 1991 body and with that exact nutrition plan. That set up is probably decently fast given the narrow tubes the J Disc and the fairly narrow pad placement. Here is my 1991 IMC Penticton set up:

Kestrel 200, torque platform forward seat post, Mavic GP4 rims, Shimano Ultegra 7 speed 12-23. 53x39, 172.5 cranks. I believe the tubulars with conti sprinters or Grand Prix (can't remember but I was always on Conti). Cinelli Base bar, profile clip on, flapping singlet, Rhode Gear mushroom helmet, Powerbar on top tube, single water bottle holder (why do you need more than 1 when they have an aid station every 10 miles). I think that day's split was 5:37. Not bad considering I had no clue what I was doing other than going as hard as possible until I slowed down and then went hard as possible at the new slow down speed and then slowed down again and again and again, until I was not moving that fast anymore. Then got on the run and repeated the same process. Still went 10:30, but Fernanda Keller dropped me on the rollers right after Richter after my 25 year old self had to get to the top of Richter before her (what was I thinking anyway should have just followed her up right???).

That is eerily accurate. In fact, I rode 2:39 and finished with a PR for the race (11 times since 1990) with a time of 4:47.

Was your 10:30 Penticton time a PR as well?

It is interesting how technology is helpful but more so as you get older...

Regarding World's Toughest, just posted this video to the World's Toughest thread. 1991 World's Toughest.
https://drive.google.com/...WWNNczNSZ2VVbFE/view
My training partner, Larry, had some great parents who would film our events.

Check out:
- The mullets
- How incredibly low key this was.
- How the swimmers popped up early (and ran in the water, loosing time) instead of just swimming to the swim finish
- The speedos
- j-discs
- Early Giro helmets
- Clip on bars on road bikes

As a side note, this was one race where, sadly, beer didn't taste good after it. We were simply too ruined.

Dev - your pic does show a pair of Scott "Extreme" bars. I believe the Scott "100k" bars were a separate and much narrower version that made the Extreme look like ape hanger bars in comparison.

I used the same model (Extreme) on my Litespeed 6/4 Blade - an ex Chevy LA Sheriff's custom frame that I bought after the team folded. Found it on an ad on rec.sports.triathlon newsgroup and bought it from Dave Lettieri who (I think) at one point was Armstrong's tour mechanic before opening his own shop.

I really liked the minimalist design of the Extreme bars compared to the clunky alternatives at the time. I had it mounted to the super-adjustable Look Ergostem to get a low position.

They were only 38 cm wide and because of the placement of the brakes, you really could not brake too hard, because the brake lever would hit the bar before "full force"....but what the heck, I was only 28 and that was a "speed enhancement" feature to make sure I did not chicken out and bleed off too much speed by braking too hard. It was no problem at Penticton or at the F1 course at Esprit....you adapt. I even did an "upgrade" and put a look ergo stem on that and placed those bars 4 cm above the front wheel and did a few tris Chris Boardman position! The handling with the ergo stem with the bars close to the front wheel was surprisingly stable.

In terms of PB, 10:30 at Penticton at 25 was one of my bests and that was done off only Olympic tri training, and a weekly 20K long run (of course every run was done at 4 min per k's or may as well not bother going out the door). I did 2 long rides of 4 hours hammering with the Olympic tri crew for half and then going back out for more. The PB was only 10:18 at LP and 10:20 in Kona. I've only done mainly slow courses: LP, Penticton. Tremblant, Whistler, Tahoe, South Africa, Nice. The fastest course I have done is Texas and that is still kind of slow (similar slow to Kona). As for Wildflower I went on basically the same technology as those pictures and had my best race there in 96 (28/2:39/1:28+transitions) when I was young and could run fast. That day I missed a KQ by 8 second. The technology helps us today on the bike, but on a slow course like Wildflower you can't gain thing back with tech....this year my split time were 32+2:48+1:48. I want to believe that the wind on the bike was more!

1. Cowman! Here he is without horns in 2001 at the Donner Lake Tri (great race BTW).
In 1991, when I was finishing the run at World's Toughest, that crazy guy was just heading out, horns included (!)
What a legend.

2. Aerodynamics and such in 1990
- Giro helmet - first thin hardshell they made
- bladed front spoke wheel
- j-disc!
- Descente shorts (before they disappeared)
- Scott Clip-Ons
- Nishiki International bike
- Selle Italia Turbo saddle
- Downtube Shimano 600 SIS shifters
- TIME high-heel shoes

My first triathlon was in Woodstock Ontario in 1983 so some Canadians might remember that. The race was a SRB, but I can't remember why they switched it around but it might have been because of the heat and they wanted to do the run earlier.

I did IMC in Penticton back in 1991 and 1992 when there were about 1,200 racers and I stopped doing them because they were getting too crowded...

As for other things from back then, for some reason I remember that Dave Scott would rinse his cottage cheese to get rid of some of the fat.

There was also a girl on a cover of Triathlete (or Triathlon) magazine and I bought the magazine (I usually just browsed through them in the store) just so I could keep her picture. For the life of me I can't remember her name but it certainly made me want to stay in the sport.

I did my first 'half' (2nd triathlon) at the Inaugural Tinman Triathlon in Menomonie, Wisconsin August 1980. The distances were 1 mile swim, 55 mile bike and 12.4 mi run. TriFed/USAT did not exist so apart from not cutting the course there were no rules. I recall the water was in the upper 60s and we all wore speedos. Everyone used road bikes because tri-bikes were not yet invented, nor were aerobars or lockstep pedals. We did not wear helmets. We drafted....legally. We stopped and got off our bikes to refill a water bottle and eat a banana or fig newton...no one was handing you anything. And it cost a whopping $12 to enter.

Lets take Seat Shifters a step further. Seat Shifter was invented by Rick Sutton. He was also the founder of Sea Otter Classic. This photo might also be a good test (if you can name them all. One of the 4 might be more difficult to name due to his relative lack of race talent.

I still have mine (sort of), all that's original is the frame. Nearly everything else has been replaced at least twice. It currently has 10sp Ultegra/105, an early Kestrel EMS fork, and a Frankenstein Oval/Profile aerobar, and now mainly resides on my trainer (but still gets out for occasional rides). The original "Too Pink" finish has faded to a very pale pink, and the top of the top tube is off-white. Here it is in pinker days, about 18 years ago, with a Profile BRC fork/Airwave bar, and J-Disc:

All of my road and tri bikes are set up with the original PD6401 and PD7401 pedals from the late 80s. Still haven't found a pedal I like better, and with the number of bikes I have, changing wouldn't be cheap...

- Ken Glah's clothing line (speedo and man-bra) with the boomerang pattern on it - I had neon yellow, neon green and blue
- Nike BRS gear, including the running shorts with no liner because you would just pull them over the swimsuit
- Harold Robinson - can't believe no one had mentioned him
- when the USTS series became the BLTS series
- one-year-only USTS/BLTS venues (e.g., Austin 1983)
- Bass Lake, then Hilton Head
- when you could compete as a pro just by declaring yourself as one
- Hans Dieben (the original dominant old guy)
- Paul Thomas

How did they settle on those distances?

I can only speculate. I was aware of Ironman Hawaii on Oahu then, but the 140.6 wasn't a magic figure or settled distance and I imagine the organizers felt it was close enough to a half. But no one perceived it as a "half", just something that was challenging, but much less difficult than that 'thing' they were doing in Hawaii. The Tinman lasted from 1980 to 2006. By the end, it was still an odd duck with the swim at 1.5 miles, the bike at 58.6 miles and the run still at the original 20k. I saw a historical compilation from Lew Kidder that listed the Tinman as the 21st triathlon held in the United States, but his list missed one that I did in Madison, Wisconsin a few weeks earlier. There were no triathlons in Wisconsin prior to 1980.

Those are third generation Scott clip-ons. The first gen was just a u-shaped loop, no pads. I bought them, and within a month was fashioning my own pads out of 4" PVC pipe (cut in quarters) and the blue poly foam pad from REI. Pop-riveted some steel lumber strap to the bottom, held onto the bar with a pipe clamp... Voila.

Jan Wanklyn (may have butchered the spelling on that one). She spent the last half mile doubled over, and then going on all-fours for a while because she just couldn't hold her body up, then finally just dragging herself over the line. If I remember right, she also asked "Is that it, am I done?"

Any dimples or wrinkles came out pretty quickly with a few blasts from a hair dryer. And they were pretty easy to repair with MonoKote. I broke a spoke once on mine, I just sliced the cover open, replaced the spoke, and patched it back up. Part of the reason I chose white instead of any of the other colors was that was easier to match at the hobby shop...

You've been around the sport a long time when you remember....
  • Getting tired of the word legends 20 years ago.
  • The races got better and better organized, and people keep talking about the good old days.
  • Saying to yourself, "I hope triathletes will stop thinking they are special compare to other endurance sports".
  • ITU racing start getting better when they start with draft legal racing.

I almost don't want to remember because then I'd likely find out she is married and that despite only seeing her on a triathlon magazine about 28 years ago, and not even knowing her name now, my dreams will be shattered...

Eney Jones, think she made two covers. She was primarily a swimmer who dabbled for a bit in triathlon in the early days, and now crushes dreams in masters swim meets and OW racing. She is still fit and I believe single...(-;

This is hilarious - I only knew her as a substitute masters' coach back in Boulder. I had no idea who she was until I hopped onto the last page of this thread and noticed her unusual name and checked if it was the same woman. Yep.

Wow.

The point is, ladies and gentleman, that speed, for lack of a better word, is good. Speed is right, Speed works. Speed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

Tinley flying into Canton, Ohio for a local race (1987?) riding what looked like a 1980 USA Cycling team bike with the front wheel smaller than the rear. He actually finished the race, left for the airport with the bike still at the race site. A mystery on what happened then.

As for other things from back then, for some reason I remember that Dave Scott would rinse his cottage cheese to get rid of some of the fat.

I remember, as a teenager, watching a speech by mark Allen. During the speech, he talked about his defeats to Dave and the things he tweaked in order to start beating him. One of the things was giving up chocolate chip cookies, which he loved. He had heard that Dave was so fanatical about his diet that he rinsed his cottage cheese, and he said "how can I continue to eat cookies and expect to beat a guy that rinses his cottage cheese!"

I also remember him talking about feeling so disheartened that he trained so much and couldn't best him. He mentioned doing the equivalent of something like a hundred something IMs over the course of the year, and couldn't fathom doing more. But he focused on specific training, and when he started winning he compared his training and he was doing more or less the same hours.

Long Chile was a silly place.

Thats awesome, I have lost track of those two Twinkies..Just looked up the results, but could only find last years where they ran a 1;40, so that was a nice drop at their ages. Not sure how old they are now, but have to be mid to late 50's?? I guess this tying thing is going to be with them forever, anyone know their whereabouts and status???

Here's a pic, 1990 Bud Light USTS San Jose
- Trifit clothes
- Magenta and other day-glo hues
- Calves
- When the podium went 5-deep and athletes would actually hang around for the awards ceremony
- Free post-race massage
- Vuarnets (I still have them!)
- Asics Gel-Lytes (man, that was "the" shoe back in the day)
- Blisters on the tops of my feet (likely from wearing Gel Lytes...)
- Bandages from trying to grab a water bottle on the bike course and falling - my friend still has scars
- Bud Light!

* side note, not sure if it was this year or earlier but Mike Pigg rode 27 mph avg. The closest to him went 25 (I think Ricettelo).
Just unbelievable, especially because it had the fearsome "Metcalf Mauler" climb.

...when you had less people providing you regular medical treatment than races per year.

Back in the 90s was much easier to just turn up and race. Now it's a major mission of injury management and threading the eye of the needle to be fit but not injured on a specific day of the year.

(this came from a conversation at swim squad where I pointed out I have 2 coaches - general and swim , and a team of 4 physio/masseuse for a hobby I do twice a year.)

We are the same age, we were 19. Not too long after that he finished 5th in the olympics in 2000. That was the 1st time i saw triathlon and I liked it. I remember it was late here in Spain, i woke up and Olivier Marceau was running solo at the front when he was french :)

Original poster here. Ok, you woke me up from a LONG slumber away from ST. How about when they referred to Duathlon as a Cyruthon? The same era when it was Biathlon, but that term had to be re imagined with the winter sport confusion. I did the Cyruthon in Whistler B.C., might have been early 90's .

(1) The original SI article on the Ironman.
(2) The time before anyone had broken 3 hours for the marathon leg
(3) The time before anyone had broken 9 hours
(4) For New Englanders: George Missilaides(spelling?), Gary Passler, Marc Surprenant (all high placings in the Endurance Triathlon when on Cape Cod in 1983, 1984) (first East Coast Iron I believe)
(5) Sark Bars (pre-existing technology referred to in Profile's patent applications) (I still use them.)
(6) Going training on the path next to the Charles River (in 1984, I believe, my second year in tris) and coming across an all-women's triathlon benefitting the Harvard Women's Crew or Swim Team. Only one woman had finished (she had borrowed a bike from a roommate) and another roommate finished second. So I talked to the winner for a while during the time they were waiting for second place; she told me it was her first triathlon and her name was Karen Smyers.
(7) Going to Ironman Canada in 1987 and going to dinner with a group of people including Lyn van Dov (spelling?). The guy on my right told a really awesome story about why he loved triathlon. While I wasn't happy with some of his decisions after he got a different job, Les MacDonald seemed like a very nice guy who loved triathlons.
(8) You remember when Dave McGillivray was more involved with triathlon and wasn't yet the race director for the Boston Marathon. (At my first job, as an actuary (1981), I was told that I was replacing Dave, who had left to run cross the country to raise money for the Jimmy Fund.)
(9) Ultras before Guy Rossi was involved. (1986)
(10) Ironman Slide Shows (If anyone has 1987 I would love to get a copy, as I'm in the second-to-last photo, but I only have the photo and not the slide show.)
(11) Double Brown and Kiwi Lager Ironmans in Auckland (I hope those names are correct.)

...and one I forgot:
(12) Hearing there was a really good young cyclist coming up through the ranks who might make an impact in the world of cycling: Greg Lemond

Tri or tri not; this is no du. (--- with apologies to Yoda.) Slow triathlete who survived Huntsville, Lelystadt, Colmar, Fontanil, and
Szekesfehervar/Lake Velence. Arbor hydration specialist in a kid's park in Monterrey 4 times in the 1990s (and in the pits in 1994).

Les loved triathlon, and he loved a great story. After he founded the ITU and became it's first President, then started the push to get Triathlon in the Olympic Games, and was often in a battle with IRONMAN, it's important to note that Les, started out in his early years as a triathlete himself, racing IM races. In fact, I think he held an Age Group Course record at either IMC or IMH back in those mid 1980's years.

I was recently involved in a double Interview with Simon Whitfield and Chris McCormack - most of the discussion was about the fact that Simon, won that first Olympic Games triathlon and Macca, inexplicably was left OFF the Australian Team - and how THAT came to be!! But Les's name did come up a few times and the massive importance of the work he did getting triathlon into the Olympic Games so that day could actually happen!

I still like simple.

Just recently Alex Hutchinson wrote, a piece for Outside Magazine about a huge meta-analysis study done to determine which actual interval session yield, results. This looked at research over many years of many different kinds of workouts here are the two that worked:

1) A "VO2 max" session of 4 - 5 mins of running hard alternating with a 2 - 3 minute rest, times 5 - 6. Interestingly, it seemed to matter little how hard relatively you do the harder intervals. As long as they were above "tempo" level pace, it yielded the about the same results as if you almost killed yourself on each one!

2) 20 - 30 sec "sprint" type intervals, preferably up a hill, with a 4 minute or so recovery. These are done at close to all-out. Repeat 10 - 20 times.

What I found ironic and funny about this, is back when I started training as a distance runner, 40+ years ago 2 sessions my Coach of the time had us do were repeat Miles in 5 minutes or less on the track or trail, with a 2 - 3 minute jog recovery, and/or classic hill repeats up a steep hill of about 100 to 200m!!

Couldn't agree more. The training side of things is far simpler than the engineering side. I don't think it's because I just understand it better either.

Mounting a dismounting your bike, right at the rack. And believing that oval chain rings gave you free speed, only to find out a couple years later, that biopace got it wrong by 45 degrees.

I don't think anyone mentioned this back-of-saddle bar.
I think the idea was to push back against it to drive a bigger gear.
I seem to recall it was a late 80s-early 90s product, maybe an Aussie or a Kiwi company, targeted at the triathlete market.
Anybody remember the manufacturer or the product name? Anybody use one?
