Trying to buy a bike, can someone answer a few Q for me?
I'm looking into buying a Cannondale CAAD 8 -or trying to convince my parents to help me with it, and call it a Christmas present- but I just talked to someone at the semi-local bike shop, and now I'm a bit confused. But on the upside of things, the bike(s) I'm looking at are $899 instead of the $1099 last time I looked! Yay for end of season sales!

She told me that they have two CAAD 8s. One is 54 cm and silver, the other 52 cm and red. (I think I like silver better). She told me that they are 2006 CAAD 8s, but then also "R 700s". What does that mean? When I look on the Cannondale website, under CAAD 8 they have "optimo 1" and "optimo 2." So what is the R700 thing? Is the optimo 1/2 for the 2007 models and the R700 is the 2006 ones?

TIA :)

I think CAAD8 and Optimo are the same thing. It's Cannondale's all-aluminum frame for '06. Now, I don't know what Optimo 2 is, but maybe that's what it's called for '07?

R700 is the model number and differs from the other models in how it's spec'd. Are you looking at the regular R700 or R700 Feminine?

Aren't you supposed to get the bike that fits not the prettiest one? :) anyways that is way to many numbers companies need to just make names for stuff it would be a lot easier. Anyways i'm on lunch break right now but i'll look around tonight to see if i can figure anything out.

-Yup, the "optimo" 1 and optimo 2 are the two different things I found on their site under CAAD 8. http://www.cannondale.com/...oad/caad8/index.html

I don't know what "spec'd" means.

From the cannondale website

1. What is Optimo aluminum and how was it developed?
Optimo aluminum was developed in a partnership with Alcoa and was introduced to the market in 2002 with the CAAD7 road frame. The development process of the specific elements of the alloy took over 18 months, and Cannondale has exclusive use of this alloy in the bicycle industry.

2. What are the specific properties of Optimo?
Optimo aluminum is a 6000 series alloy that has superior properties to 6061, 6066, and 6069. Compared to 6061, Optimo's proprietary mix contains slightly more silicon and less magnesium, which results in higher ultimate tensile strength and higher elongation. A higher ultimate tensile strength means that Cannondale's engineers can use less material, saving weight while still resulting in a frame that passes Cannondale's industry leading test requirements. The higher elongation makes the welded frame structure less susceptible to fatigue cracks since the material can "stretch" more without initiating the microscopic damage that can grow into cracks.

3. Why doesn't Cannondale use 7000 series alloys?
With over 20 years of building aluminum bikes (Cannondale has never even made a steel frame) our experience has shown us that 6061 and Optimo alloys are superior to 7000 aluminum at the welded joint. Despite advances in heat treatment, 7000 series alloy still exhibit a large drop in mechanical properties at the welded tube junction, resulting a frame that is either heavier or does not pass Cannondale's stringent ESAL testing.

If I'm going to spend a significant amount of money on a bike the thing had better look good!

Silver or red is fine - silver is my preference, but in all honesty it doesn't make that much difference, I like both colors.

I have a CAAD4 R400. I was under the impression that they just changed the name of the R series. I'm happy with it, but in retrospect wish I had gotten a slightly nicer bike- this one came with Sora components that have given me a lot of problems.

What components does the CAAD8 come with?

Honestly, if i ever have to do a thesis for a masters in marketing its going to be to market to women make it look cute. Thats all you have to do and 90 percent of women will buy it. I don't know how well that idea would go over as a topic though :)

the '06s had "model" numbers like R700, R1000, R5000. Each model had the same frame, but varied on parts. The Optimo is just '07 model names.

Get the best deal on the bike that fits. I have a '06 R5000 and it's a great bike.

I do however agree with you on the paint job thing. I told my dad i feel like i am in 1910 and can buy any bike i want as long as its black cause that seems to be the only color anyone wants to put out this year. besides a couple companies.

It does sound like a great deal. I got mine for $650 but it had cheaper components.

As a tip- Consider switching out the saddle on the spot if it's not comfortable. They should credit you the cost of the saddle towards one you like and save you some money. I swapped out for a Terry woman specific saddle when I bought both of my bikes. Very comfortable.

He was teasing. Rear shocks are for full suspension mountain bikes, Cannondale just has their site set up so they list everything for every bike, whether it is relevant or not.

There will be many pedal and shoe options for you. I have SPD and LOOK pedals. A bonus of the SPDs is that spinning bikes have SPD clips. You can use your shoes for your bike and when you teach spinning class.

the difference between 52cm and 54cm doesnt' seem like that much - either should fit, is that what you're getting at by saying "forget the size and get the one that looks better"? I don't remember what size the one I had this summer was... I just rode the damn thing

With mostly 105 components, $900 is a pretty decent deal. Just make sure the LBS spends some time working on the fit. And be prepared to walk away if neither fits.

Don't analyse it too much. The geometry is the same on all the aluminium Cannondales. Just get the right size, in a colour you like, and ride the hell out of it.

Those are great bikes.

I have sold several cannondales, and they fit a bit long, esp. for women if you get a "mens" frame. If you are 5'6" you prob get a 52 cm (i don't have a clue on how tall you are).

You're very cutesy on this thread. What the heck?? Pretending you don't know anything about bikes?? ;)

You really don't know much about bikes, do you? ;-)

I think you should look bikes with either 105 or the slightly more expensive Ultegra components, and the R700 you're looking at falls right in there. Ask if they have an R700 Feminine and ride that and see if you like it better. It has a slightly shorter toptube and different geometry better suited for some women.

Girls...err women tend to have longer legs and shorter torsos in proportion to men. That's why when you're looking at all these bikes everyone says "get a good fitter". Some bikes are a bit more "man" proportioned, so they won't work out in some cases.

I don't think swimmer shoulders will affect your frame size, but i've been known to be wrong.

Long legs, shorter torso... that's all the women in my family and all ride the Cannondale "Feminine" frames which, among other things, have shorter top tubes.

What are you thinking? Are you crazy? Black bikes have souls, lots of them, they sucked all the souls from ugly green, red, blue, and other clolr bikes. A black bike says don't f*ck with this guy. It's like having the worst of Satan and the best of Jesus in one bike. You suck the life from other rides and it goes into your legs, giving you more watts and taking watts from them. At Soma I rolled up on a guy on a blue bike that is from a highly esteemed maker. he said you are having a nice ride (I started 3 min behind him) I pointed at my Lucero - the badest badass bike out there and said "This bike gives me the power to crush you, take your energy and leave you twisting in the wind. You have nothing left for this race. BE GONE." He finished several minutes behind me. A black bike is so bad ass that no one, not one single person tried to pass me in my last 3 races during the bike, well one tried but only b/c his bike was black and blue but he son succumbed to the rolling fury that my bike is. This is the power a black bike brings. Sure you could ride something cute and covered with flowers, maybe a bell or streamers on the handlebars, some color coordinated handlebar tape and/or a seat. You could try to ride fast, the kind of fast a yugo gets when going down a hill with the parking brake on. You could try to pass someone "excuse me, but person in my AG could you please move right just a touch so I can squeeze around you, please?" Or you could ride death, something to strike fear into the hearts and minds of those around you. 18.1 pounds of rolling fury, the sound of the disc (black of course) rotating around exuding power combined with the sound of the H3C (black again) screaming down the road. The sound of a 1000 anguished souls coupled with the roar of the mightest creator laughing at the terror before you. Where a simple phrase "on your left" and the sound of fury and hell moves people over into the gutter. Or you can ride cute and polite. You choose, badass or ass bad.

I read down through the entire post to make sure I had not missed anything, so please forgive me for asking this, but why are you buying a road bike? Nothing against Cannondale, my C'dale roadie is going on 20 years, but I never ride it since I bought my tri-bike. One has one purpose, the other a different one, but as long as I am doing tri then I ride my tri bike about 99 percent of the time. Add to that your admission that you have long legs/short body and it becomes even more complicated because that is a hard body type to fit. I should know since I had the same problem.

You don't strike me as someone who wants to have five bikes hanging about the house or have 10 grand tied up in transportation that doesn't require gas. Those Cannondales are going to be road geometry and not so friendly for aerobar use. That may be what you want, or not. Make sure the bike you are buying is the bike you need and not just a good deal.

Chad

P.S. At some point you are going to need to hand paint your hibiscus flowers on the frame and so white might not be a bad choice.

I have the 2004 version of the R700 that you are looking at. That year, it was called the R800. Some different components, but built on the CAD-8 Optimo frame. I found some very favorable reviews before getting the bike, and since getting it have really enjoyed it and have fallen in love with cycling. I did upgrade a few parts -- brakes and wheels. Partly because the standard Omega brakes were a liability, in my opinion. I upgraded to Ultegra. After a crash with a car, the driver paid for some replacements OR "upgrades" including a nice set of Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels -- this made a noticable difference. I also upgraded to the Arione Tri saddle for more comfort in the aero position.

The list that you posted shows a different set of brakes and wheels than I got on my R800. Don't assume that they need upgrading... they might be just fine.

Another poster made a great point of making sure that you get the right fit -- frame size. In my case, the owner of the bike shop that I use has been a huge help to me -- we spent a couple of hours one day doing a bike fit, which really set me comfortably.

Otherwise -- black is cool! My $.02...

Dude... two things... 1) you've been listening to the death metal again and 2).... I think I am going to ask Herbert for a Lucero on my next switch out.

That is the singular BEST post I have ever read.

"So why am I buying a road bike?"

Well, the only bike I have right now is a hybrid. I spent most of the summer training on it, but you can't use that for a race! Two weeks before the race, I called a friend of mine who is really into biking (and has done an IM) to see if he had a spare bike kicking around that I could borrow. He let me borrow his CAAD 5, which had aerobars on it. I fell in love with that bike, and my race went well. I want one just like it!

No, I don't want to wind up with five bikes, nor do I have that type of money - I'm a college student!

Thanks for the info.

TC:

You might see if anyone here or over in the Classifieds has an extra set of pedals and cleats to gvie away or sell cheaply to you.

Here is also another idea--just my opinion, though, and I know how much fun it is to get something brand new--you might also look around in the Classifieds to see if you could get a used bike in your size. Chances are that if you find one used in your price range that it will have much better components than a new one in your price range. Components are about half of the cost of a bike in your range...and they get expensive if you have to start replacing them piece by piece...

My two cents. Just make sure that you get a swimsuit to match your new bike!
