Re: Miamiman 2017 [jsmith]
I had really high expectations coming into this race, despite it being my first half iron.

The morning started off a little shaky—I heard the no wetsuit news and 3 minutes later I was pumping up my tire and the presta valve broke off into the crack pipe adapter for the disc. Fortunately, the wheel held air for the entire ride, but sitting on the bike for 56 miles with that thought was a little frustrating.

My swim was actually fairly decent for me—33:43. I've been putting in work at the pool, so I'm glad to see it's been paying off.

I hopped on the bike and knew that I had to stick to 260 watts to be able to have anything on the run. Downwind I was hitting 26 to 28 mph and into the wind I was managing 19 to 20 mph. I got a little too excited on the second loop and may have burned a few matches. I stayed consistent throughout the rest of the bike and tapered off a little towards the end because I remembered that I was looking at a 13.1 mile run and not the usual 3.1 miles... I ended up biking a 2:18:44 and felt pretty good coming into T2. Ended up at 261 AP and 265 NP—80% of FTP.

My first mile was considerably faster than my GP—6:30/mile. My legs felt pretty good but my second mile slowed a bit to my goal (6:50/mile) and then I started to develop a bad case of side stitches during mile 3. I ended up doing a run/walk routine and hobbled in to a 1:49:33 run—a very poor time for what I know I am capable of. I also tripped over a crack in the pavement at the uturn close to the entrance of the zoo. Not my proudest moment. hah.

I ended up 1st in my AG (25–29) and 12th OA. For my first showing at this distance, I can't be too upset. It was definitely a learning experience. I need to figure out my side stitch issue (see other thread), but when I do, I'm confident I can go close to the 4:30 mark. Total time was 4:45:33.

During the run, I told myself that I would never do this distance again...

I am already researching 70.3s to do next season.

I have a sprint this weekend back in my hometown that I will probably do, but after that, I am going to take some time completely off and focus on my last semester final exams that I've been somewhat neglecting (the joy of third year law school).
