Course Info: Swim:
The 1.2 mile swim has taken on different configurations based on the water depth. In 2004 because of the high water levels, the swim course became a triangular shaped course. The past three years the water level was lower, so swim became an out and back course. Our choice is to have a triangular shaped course. Regardless of the lake levels, the Duke Half swim, unlike some swim venues at other events, takes place in an area of the lake that is exposed to the wind, making it challenging. Wetsuits become a borderline decision based on the USAT rules, as the water temperature is always close to the threshold temperature of 78 degrees. For the 2007 event, wetsuits were legal.
Bike:
The bike course is a 56 mile loop on roads that have little traffic on event morning. The course is challenging, moderately hilly with a couple of good climbs. This bike course has everything with hills, lots of rollers and plenty of spots where there are long, relatively flat stretches.
Run:
The double-loop run course is very unique. The entire run is held inside the park on the trail system. The run surface is a combination of grass and hard-packed dirt. Only the beginning and end of each loop is on pavement. If you’re venturing out to New Hope to check out the race course prior to race weekend, don’t be alarmed by the gravel. The park rangers do an outstanding job of scraping the gravel off the roads that comprise the run course, so during the race you’re actually running on the hard-packed dirt beneath the gravel. The run has a couple of good climbs that are not steep, but longer, gradual hills. There is a decent amount of shade on the run course which is most welcome.
