Low back pain gone! Quote | Reply

I have gone one year without low pain and wanted share what has helped me most. I have suffered over last ten years of having at least 3 occasions a year of "quasi-modo" bent over, pain that would last at least a week with training shot down the tubes. After countless trips to chiros and massage therapists and finally a D.O. that does back manipulations, I have come to the conclusion that what has helped me the most and has had the most impact on preventing a reoccurence can be summed up with two words,[b] Back bends.[/b] Simple standing back bends, 30 seconds in the morning, 30 seconds mid day and 30 seconds before I hit the rack. It keeps in line, literally.

I just bend straight back and look as far back on the ceiling as I can and hold for 30 seconds or so. I have also found that laying on a sturdy table(keyword:stable) on my back with my butt right on the edge with my legs dangling (off the ground), I do this a few times for like, 30-60 seconds every few days. This is works wonders for me and has kept me off chiros payrolls. For me it's all been about staying inline. It's when you get out of align that all the trouble starts. By doing these exercises consistently, I stay inlign and happy :).

Your back pain is not genuine cycling related lower back pain as you only experience it about three times per year and is more to do with

putting your back out of position than with cycling. Genuine cycling

pain happens every time you ride your bike and starts soon into the

ride and increases in intensity until the victim is forced off for instant

relief before climbing back on for more of the same torture. It is caused

by the continuous strain that direct downward pedal pressure style of

pedaling puts on the lower back and can be completely eliminated by

switching to a 45 degree angle instead of 90 when applying the

pressure from hip/thigh to pedal and this is done by using a toes down

technique and not the ankling style that climbers use when they sit

back on their saddles. That method would only increase the back strain even further.

There already is a recommended safe back bending technique, it is

done by lying face downwards on a floor and while keeping the thighs

pressed to the floor you gently raise your shoulders off the floor and

force them backwards by use of the arms.

Pedalling toes down for the sake of a toes down style and using the

downward pedal pressure style of course will cause all types of injury

but if the toes down style is simply the result of using a completely

different power application technique, there will be no injuries. Anquetil's pedal power came from his hips and that is what makes

all the difference.

That sounds a lot like the advice in the only book I've ever found useful for back pain: Robin Mckenzie's Treat Your Own Back. Worth its weight in gold, if your suffer from lower back trouble.
