Very cool. I love the polished frame. Are the the welds intentionally darker or did they just take the anodizing differently? Very unique and super cool.

For proper weld characteristics, a welding rod is used that adds material to the melt. So the chemical composition of the weld is different from the tubes, and therefore they react differently to the anodizing process, especially with lighter colors.

the welds were a "happy accident". The anodizing shop told me the welds "hardens" after it get welded so the anondizing would not penetrate as well. I was hoping the whole frame would be one color but I like the unique 2 tone color as well.

Gerard ..does doing stuff like this to the frame and the welds affect the warranty?

That looks totally awesome.

Post a few pictures when you have it built up. I hope you are going to spend as much attention to detail on the components and you'll have one amazing bike.

I think it looks great but I would have had a hard time not stopping at the polish stage. You would have been blinding people as you pass them!

Re: anodized P3 [gsxrawd] [In reply to] Can't Post

IMHO...you should've stopped at the polished stage ;-)

I'm not diggin' the darker welds...looks to me like it's "glued" together or something. But that may just be me....

That is an eye catcher for sure. I hope you'll post it when it's built back up. I'm curious to see how you'll accessorize the color scheme.

I have to agree with the others, that polished photo looks awesome. I like the final color too, just not as much as the shiny silver. Think of all the cool nicknames your bike could've had with that blinding finish. I too am interested in seeing how you match up the rest of the build. Post some more pictures. Also, kudos for doing something different.

Re: anodized P3 [JulianInEngland] [In reply to] Can't Post

I think it looks awesome. Although I would had problems going past the polished stage. I was going to anodize my Blade and get some personalized decals by Tai, but after I took off the original decals I just left it bare and love it.
I'm trying to get down to my original weight. 6lbs 7 ounces.

Re: anodized P3 [gsxrawd] [In reply to] Can't Post

You know...after thinking about this a bit more, you might've gotten a similar color and effect without the dark welds by, instead of anodizing, using a chromate conversion coating (sometimes called "chem film" in the military electronics biz). It ends up being a gold color and is an excellent adhesion layer for paint. A clear coat over the top of that would make it nice and shiny.

One of the cool things about the chromate conversion coating is that it's possible to "repair" scratches. If you were to get a scratch through the clear coat and also through the chromate coating down to the bare aluminum, you can actually apply some of the conversion liquid to the exposed aluminum and re-convert it.

I've been thinking about doing something like that to an old aluminum MTB frame of mine...but now I'm thinking more of the polished approach ;-)

Off the top of my head...that frame now screams for...

Black Nokon cabling
Campy group (the black stuff... and Record carbon cranks)
Black SI Storica saddle
Zipp Z series wheels (if for nothing else, than to be rid of the garish red and yellow decals)
Vision bars (get the Cervelo OEM ones...that don't have the red in the decals...)

And white bar tape.

Re: anodized P3 [gsxrawd] [In reply to] Can't Post

The polish finished looked great, but unless it was sealed it would look bad in a few months, i used to polish a lot of bike parts but gave up trying to keep them looking good,Going to such a polish might have been a waste of time, the anadizing process thends to roughen up a surface and make it more of a matte finish. Nice frame!

You need to feed your lawn.

I notice your Cervelo decal is just a little different from the original, is it "official".

Nice photography too.

Re: anodized P3 [gerard] [In reply to] Can't Post

If the welding rod material causes different coloring when annodized, what does the manufacturer Santa Cruz do differently to the process when they anodize their frames? Their frames don't have the different colors on the welds, even when the color gold is used.

Re: anodized P3 [Deus ex Machina] [In reply to] Can't Post

It's probably a stack of dimes weld, not a smooth weld. The welding rod for a stack of dimes weld has yet another chemical composition than a welding rod for a smooth weld, so once again a different reaction to anodization. Most anodized frames use stack of dime welds preceisely to avoid discoloring.

As for the warranty issue somebody raised, of course we have no way of knowing if all processes have been done correctly, so it is difficult to warrant a frame where we have had no control over the final finishing process.

GSXR, your bike looks great. Better than I imagined. Post some picks when you get it built up. Hope I get to see it at a race someday!
