For those of you that have tested your Vo2 Max in a lab, what were your results and run times? I tested yesterday and hit 62.1 but did not reach my Max HR before the end of the protocol. I'm currently in a build season and hoping for a 2:49 marathon in February. I suck at 5ks though and barely break into the 17s. I'd like to see how this stacks up with other peoples' results.

what was your pace at vo2max ?

The protocol ended at 6mph and 22% grade.

It means that my Vo2 Max is potentially higher. In other words, the protocol finished before my HR peaked. I was told that to get the true number I would need to use a tougher protocol but they had never had to run any other protocol before. It wouldn't be much difference but maybe just a little bit. My HR reached 189 at the end of the protocol but my Max HR is in the mid 190s.

I had similar results to this when I did a VO2 MAX test ... We ran out of protocol before I ran out of juice. I hit 61.3.
My PRs from this year are:
5k: 17:15
10k: 35:03
HM: 1:19:31

"Train so you have no regrets @ the finish line"

Awesome. That's what I was looking for. I believe they make a protocol that would find a true Max but it would probably Max most of us out pretty quick and it's not commonly used.

Was it part of a study? Why did they end the test early?

The Kinesiology department at my school asked for me to test to give their grad students experience. The study didn't end early. It's just a set protocol. 21 minutes of increasing speed and % grade. The changes in grade and speed were automatically controls by the testing equipment. It only reads the results during that time frame though. So if you do not reach your Max HR before the test ends, you may only get a ballpark figure.

Ah OK, sounds like "bruce protocol" and they ended at stage 6, for more info:

You could probably look at the progression of the test, or how you might have done and use the formulas to predict your VO2 max.
Generally if it was a test for a paying athlete you would increase just speed and not grade.

Maybe Maurice can comment on this math
let’s say you can run the race at 80% of vo2max. that’s 49.68 ml/kg/min
at an economy of 200 ml/kg/km that’s 14.904 km/h
42.2 km / 14.904 km/h = 2.83 hr = 2h49.88min. There ya go J
according to this, an economy of 200 is a stretch
http://sportsscientists.com/...ning-economy-part-i/
from what I seen from Daniel's table, I think 80% of VO2max sounds possible.
Maurice, is this correct ?

What was your RER at the end of the test? If it was at or above 1.15 you were on borrowed time anyways and the result is close. Are you at race weight? Obviously that has a big impact on relative Vo2 and any subsequent calculations.

I'll have to look again later but I believe RER was 1.14. I am about 5pds heavier than race weight.
So you might get another 1-2 ml/kg/min run to exhaustion and then another 2 or so from weight loss. That means you could race closer to a VO2 of 65 and your goal might be a little more realistic. Like others have said, its a simple matter of trained threshold % on race day and economy from there. You are in with a shot I guess.
