BB30 to 24...should I
Real simple. Have a BB30 on my bike build. Just getting ideas behind if I should keep the BB30 (and get corresponding cranks) or go with a converter BB. I guess it all depends on what cranks I decide to go with, but short of that....should I keep or should I change?

I just made this change a few weeks ago for my road bike. I got so sick of the constant creaks of the BB30, pretty much every revolution was a sound, so very annoying over a long 5-6 hr ride.

I purchased the Wheels Mfg 24mm and a Shimano 105 crankset. Works great, no creaking anymore. It costed around $100 for the adapter and about $130 for the crank, but I am so happy that I made the switch. It is easily worth it for me! There is no more sound, riding is much more enjoyable now... so much that it almost feels like its a new bike!

I had some converter cups on my Shiv, but didn't seem like a good engineering solution as you're still using the BB30 bearings and they seem a bit prone to water and dirt ingress.

I bought a Praxis converter which replaces the BB30 bearings completely. Really happy with it, no creaking, crank spins freely.

I use the wheels mfg converter with a 105 crank same as above and it's fine.

Swapped back and forth between 105 cranks of various vintage and differing options but like with almost everything else I end up back with cheap Shimano stuff. I didn't notice any performance difference from actual BB30 cranks to 105 with an adapter.

My first choice would be to stick with the BB30 but if I already had a good crank or a PM that was a 24mm I would convert.

The Wheels MFC 30-24 reducers are solid, I have used them on Tarmacs, Venge, Felts with no issues what so ever.

Is there a "thought" that BB30 is superior to BB24 or anything like that? Or really it all just depends on the crank you want to use?

Lighter, larger spindle. So that means possibly stiffer with reduced weight. Win win.

The installation is a bit tricky and it requires precision. Unlike the standard BB, you can't just get it installed at some low end mom/pop shop. That's why people start getting creaks in their BB. It has to be precisely installed with good bearings and you should have no problems.

Apparently it does creak more often than 24mm setups (GXP/Hollowtech/etc.) but it isn't going to ruin the entire setup.

You can do weight comparisons yourself with a quick google search; IMO the frame is going to matter more than the cranks in terms of perceived stiffness. You can drop quite a bit of weight though.

I was riding an Allez Sport from 05 with an Ultegra 6700 crank, then switched to an 09 Tarmac SL Pro, BB30, with a S-works crank. No scale, but just holding the bearings/BB30 crank vs the Ultegra crank alone and you can feel the weight savings.

I just bought and installed the BB30 to Shimano 24-mm adapter for my Cannondale. Really dig it. I can use the existing bottom bracket, and the adapter cups are only 30 bucks. I can't tell the difference between native BB30, and this.

BUT, I only got a shimano crank to go between my Cannondale (BB30) and old Cervelo P3 (BSA). If I only rode the Cannondale, I'd stick with a native BB30.
