Norseman starts tonight with GPS tracker
Due to a lot of snow in the mountains and a lot of cold water coming into the fjord, the Norseman organizers were forced to shortened the swim. They could not find any spots where a full distance swim could take place. Including the spot they used in 2011 when they added 20k to the bike leg to get a full 3.8k swim.
You can follow the GPS here

The feedback I have gotten is that the fjord is cold.

The weather on top of the first climb will be around 0C tomorrow morning. That will be fun. Hopefully not too much ice on the road.

So it's losing its title as a race for the hard men. Shortened swim seems like a weak decision.

I'm between two minds there. On one hand, organisers have to have the safety of competitors as their priority, and shortening the swim seems a sensible idea. On the other hand, I did the first edition of the Celtman (a triathlon in north west Scotland inspired by the Norseman) and the water was at a similar temperature. The swim was shortened, but only to 3km. Norseman cut it to 1.9km this year, and it seems to be a bit too short.Fastest guys swam in 31'.

The fastest guy was also the fastest AG out of water in Kona. He is a good swimmer.
It is challenging with a fjord and I know the organizers did everything to make the swim happen. Searching all around the fjord for a "warm" spot.

It was fun following the race on GPS. Some really good running.
GPS makes a big difference in following the race. Maybe something for other organizers.......
