OWS race/vacation destinations

So I'm thinking of an OWS trip somewheres later in the year. Specifically I'm thinking of the Barbados swim festival first week in November or the Bermuda Swim Round the Sound in late October. Anyone ever done either of these?

Looks like they have a lot of swim events there, and seems like a nice time of year to go.
Here's contact info for the Flying Fish Masters Swim Club there so you can ask a local swimmer for details.

Cayman Islands are supposed to be a big destination for OWS events. I have a family friend that is currently running the Cayman Islands national swim program. Used to be the women's head coach for Notre Dame then ran Club Wolverine, so they're focusing on building their swim program. I talked to them over Christmas and they said there's open water events basically every weekend. Said it's crystal clear water and smooth as glass. I'd check it out.

Nothing to say about the two you mention but in the spring there is a Nevis to St Kitts swim. Olivier Marceau holds the record, I think. Pretty awesome destination.

While I've never done the swim around Harrington Sound, I once rented a cottage on the Sound and swam there every day for a week. It is stunning. I swore I'd go back for the race but never made it.

Going to Oahu next week and my wife and I are doing the first race in the North Shore Swim Series

We have done these races in the past and they are absolutely fantastic.

In September we will be at the Tiki Swim in Oceanside;

The folks at the marathonswimmers.org forum will have better input into this.

I did a swim in Sandpoint Idaho a few years back, about an hour north of Coeur de Laine IIRC; I didn't stay long but seemed like place that would be very nice to visit if you were an outdoorsy person.

Utah Triple Crown
The Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming consists of the English Channel, Catalina Channel and Manhattan Island Marathon Swim. Each of these swims has its own unique challenges.

Utah has its own version of the Triple Crown consisting of three swims that must all be completed within one year. The three swims can be swam as part of organized races, or as solo swims. The combined distance of all three swims is about 25 miles.

Each of the three swims are detailed below:

Antelope Island to Black Rock Beach (Great Salt Lake) - 8-miles
This swim begins at a remote point on the southern tip of Antelope Island and finishes at Black Rock Beach, just west of the Great Salt Lake Marina. The challenge with this swim is not only the distance, but the extreme salinity of the water.

The organized swim is held in June of each year. Details at http://www.greatsaltlakeopenwater.com

Bear Lake Marina to Cisco Beach (Bear Lake) - 7-miles
This swim is across the width of Bear Lake with the Bear Lake Marina and Cisco Beach being the starting and finishing points (can be swam in either direction). This is about a 7 mile swim with water temperatures that are somewhat cooler than other bodies of water.

The organized swim is held in July of each year. Details at http://www.bearlakemonsterswim.com

Walsburg Bay boat ramp to Island Beach boat ramp and back (Deer Creek Reservoir) - 10-miles
This is the longest swim of the series. It is a beautiful mountain swim with changing scenery. Most of the swim takes place in Walsburg Bay (wakeless speeds for motorized boats). Once outside of the bay, the conditions can get choppy with a lot of boat wake.

The organized swim is held in August of each year. Details at http://www.deercreekopenwater.com

A current list of swimmers who have completed the Utah Triple Crown can be found at the link below:

from: http://saltlakeopenwater.blogspot.com/...ah-triple-crown.html

--I can't vouch for this one.
Utah has balls comparing itself to the Channel swims. Manhattan refused to comment, saying nothing more than "fly-over state"

I haven't done either of those but another possibility you should consider is a Swimtrek trip. http://www.swimtrek.com. They are out of the UK and are a fantastic company. Wifey and I have been on the trip to Malta in 2007 (not offered anymore) and last November we were on the Baja, MX trip. It was an absolute blast. I'm thinking about doing it again this November if they have slots when I pull the trigger.

You might also want to google Best Fest in Mallorca. I've never been but am thinking about it for next year.

Let me know if you have questions about Swimtrek. No affiliation with the company but happy to answer.

I know its not the Cayman Islands but I"m looking forward to this:
http://www.greatlakeplunge.com in Evanston, IL.

In case you're looking for something that's closer to home and near a nice city like Chicago to visit.

Thanks for the info and links, everyone. Those are all great ideas. You just made my decision more difficult. :). I figured Cayman Islands would have a good OWS but could never find any info. Years ago I went to Bear lake on my way to Yellowstone and thought it would be a great place for an ows. I'm going to file these away for future reference.

I'm originally from Elmhurst, just outside of Chicago. This race has possibilities.

I've done Bermuda round the sound a few times. It's a pretty cool race, it's put together professionally. There's also tons of different distances. There's a St. Croix OWS too, in November which is absolutely beautiful as well. I recommend St. Croix over Bermuda.

Thanks for the input. How did they do the feeding stations for the 10K at Bermuda? I'm going to look into St Croix

They had a point where you had to stop and they had water. I want to say every 3K. You had to put a band around your wrist so they knew you went through the check point. This was a few years ago, so I'm not sure if they have changed it since then.

What distance are you looking to do? There is a 3k OWS in Tobago in 2 weeks, right after the Rainbow Cup Tri

I was going to say the Hurricane Man 2.4 mile swim in St Petersburg Beach, FL but that's the first Saturday of May each year. For November, and assuming you are a long distance nut case, I would recommend TriFloyd's 8 Mile open water swim across the bay from Clearwater to Tampa, FL. Price goes up from $85 to $115 on 1 June. See http://www.trifloyd.com/8-mile-swim.html

Hey just thought I would mention is you opt for the barbados Open Water Swim in early November, Te Freestyle Experience is running a swim camp at the same time. We are running outdoor pool swim practices, yoga, team meals, etc, all to compliment a week of open water swimming. It's going to be amazing! http://katiebrambley.wixsite.com/freestyleexperience

And the coaches are all Olympians!
