Car Rack Security

I'm in Kansas City on my way to the DK200. Checked in to the hotel but when I went to unlock my bike from the rack, it wouldn't budge. I have a hitch rack with an integrated cable lock. It's been getting more difficult to unlock but this is the first time I couldn't get it to release. I hopped back in the car and drove to Home Depot and bought some WD40. Soaked the lock but still nothing. Went back and bought a set of 24" bolt cutters for $22. Back to the car and prepared for the struggle of cutting the cable from the rack while in the parking lot of HD. It was laughable how easy it was to free my bike. And at 9:40 at night, nobody even asked what I was doing. Just wanted to give folks a heads up that these locks aren't as secure as I believed them to be. Maybe this is common knowledge but I felt a little sick to my stomach at all the times I've left my bike locked on the car. On the rack manufacturers website, one of the product features is:
  • Integrated cable lock system AND hitch lock for maximum security (locking hitch pin included)

That's why my bike rack is in the back of my truck with a locked cap over the bed and tinted windows all around.

Out of sight, out of mind and out of the nasty elements and road debris. And you never need to worry about the drive through restaurants or garages.

bike locks like the lock on your front door that is probably 6 inches from a window that can be broken faster then that bike lock are to keep honest people honest. Even if it took 10 minutes a thief that wanted your bike will get your bike.

Also I love this guy:

The only time I've ever left my bike locked to my bike rack is when I'm doing a brick and the trailhead is busy with other people. That was with my much less expensive road bike. My new tri bike I always put in the car. And there are certain locations that I don't trust so I'll take my road bike.

One isle over at Home Depot you could have gotten one of these for $218 and then no lock out there could stop you!

A hydraulic jack cheaper and quieter, and nearly as fast.
