Just got a set of Ultegra 6800 SPD SL pedals for my NP3.

Only experience with clipless is my XT SPD's on my cross bike.

Even with the tension screw set to max low, it seems much more difficult to clip out.

Is this normal?

Yeah, that is the way mine are. I've gotten used to it after a while but it took some time. Big difference in tension between my 105's and the ultegras.

Yes, that is how they are. it will be second nature soon. Also, I would recommend sitting on the trainer and clip/unclip for awhile, but since you're not new to clipless systems, I think it will come easy to you.

They also have some "break-in" time.. keeping do it and it will be easy to clip in and out.
