Chattanooga. It won't be raining Moonpies in Boulder after the race. Mmmmm, Moonpies.

Great choice. Nooga is a great race, and the race director is awesome! ;-)

Only Check in on Friday? Athlete check in will be Thursday and Friday like last year. Mandatory bike and gear check will be Saturday. Brian

"Nelson the bad way" = gradual westbound slog uphill on some "heavy road" - always feels like you're putting out more power than you actually are and just seems to take forever just to go a couple miles even though the grade isn't that bad.

Going east however, it's a screamer.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. Even with no wind and my garmin showing "0% grade" towards the end, I'm still not going anywhere fast on that road. The good news is that it's relatively short and I can't lose too much time on it.

Drum roll please..... a decision has finally been made

Chattanooga TN is the winner, actually the IM Foundation is the big winner!

Have fun! Hope to do that one some day. Chattanooga is probably where I'd go live if I ever moved away from Boulder.

Have to say I absolutely LOVD Chattanooga. I would like to see the bike course at 112 miles and the run a lot less lumpy on the backside of the loop, but otherwise a fantastic race. The first mile of the run is like running through a gauntlet of people and so damn loud. Will be back next year.

It's only 4 miles at about 2% grade from 63rd to Nelson so it's nothing to worry about physically. It's only difficult mentally because there is often a headwind and a lot of it does not look like you are climbing when you still are.

So a steady 4 mile incline? Or it plateaus then climbing, plateaus then climbing....?

Starts off fast, steep for a bit, then fast again, then less steep. The steep sections just look less steep than they actually are and it can really suck if there's a headwind. For me, it's only 16ish minutes at around race pace (200W), but if I'm struggling that day, it can easily take longer than 20'. I figure the really strong cyclists will be up it in 12-13'. You can look up the segment on Strava. It's called "Nelson Powerhouse". Top 10 times are 10-11.5'.

The IM website states total gain of 5300feet. In your opinion is this accurate?

It is accurate! A few steep climbs at the 100mi mark, but most of the gains come from the long steady climbs in the middle. The climbs at 20,40 and 60 arent super steep like they look in the profile, but they are long and steady. The 100mi climbs are the short steep ones.

That sounds right. It's pretty standard to see around 2k feet gain in a 40 mile ride in the area. That kind of elevation gain is minimal and only noticeable in the areas previously mentioned over that many miles. Overall, it's a very fast and easy course.
