i'm staying at the Ritz in San Francisco and was wondering if there are any public pools nearby. preferably open early

Can you call the concierge and ask?

I got into a really nice club a few years ago (can't remember the name) this way.

They actually had a system where you could reserve a lane (never heard of this before). They set it up for me and even had a printed map with the route highlighted. (Not the Rtiz- don't remember what year or hotel it was- I go every year for work and the hotel changes.)

Lots of hotels have agreements with clubs.

thanks. how cold is the water at this time of the year? would there be other swimmers? are there markers or a set area?

There is an enclosed harbor (no currents). This is where many of the Alcatraz swims finish. There are some buoy markers as well. Water temps are typically high 50s/low 60s.

given the choice and water temperature here, I would say go for a pool and yeah, there are a few (UCSF has two locations, Equinox has a saline pool) or http://en.wikipedia.org/...ols_in_San_Francisco
