Lens color suggestions?
I can't stand wearing my contacts to bike anymore so am looking to get prescription sunglasses.
Looking at Oakleys because they fit my small head best. With the many lens colors available, I was hoping for some suggestions.
Color, polarized, iridium?

Have always have worn clear or yellow because I don't like feeling like I'm in the dark and like to see everything. Sun never really bothers me in feeling the need for a really dark lens. Wondering about persimmon, rose etc?

Thanks for any info ;)

I don't use prescription sunglasses, just regular one. I used to change my lenses all the time now I mainly use the phoyptochromic one, specially for mtb.

I've got a pair of Oakley half jacket xl's and I have three different lenses: Fire Iridium polarized, rose, and clear (I don't ever like riding w/o eye protection). The fire iridium lenses are probably my favorite, I'm not sure the polarization really helps all that much, I suppose it's a bit easier to see into puddles though. They aren't too dark so they may be what you are looking for. I use the rose for darker conditions and they are fine. The clears I use on really dark days or night CX races, of which we have a few around here.

Oakley also makes a new tech called 'prism' I have it on my ski goggles and it looks like it's available in most of the sunglasses as well. They say it helps enhance visibility and color contrast...after a year of skiing with with them, I'm not sure it makes a difference. The are great goggles, but that might be some marketing...

Can't comment on the 'sport specific' cycling lenses, in principal they seem good, not sure if they can do them Rx.

Hope this helps

ETA: These are all for non Rx lenses, I wear contacts as well

I just ordered some Oakley prescription Racing Jackets and had the same question. Based on my research I opted for the brown Transitions lens (photochromic), as it is supposed to transition from almost clear to medium dark. The clear option is great for me on low light and night time rides. Probably not ideal for constant extreme bright light, but I tend to do most of my rides outside of that time and I don't like overly dark lenses anyway.

Not cheap though. Cost me $680 CDN and will take 2-3 weeks to be made and delivered from California. The good news is at least I can claim most of it on my health insurance.

I am a big Rudy Project fan, as after using ALL the big names, they seemed to work best for me, and the quality is beyond the others IMO. They have a great prescription program, and gallses to fit any face, with the ability to move the lenses to fit better than any other brand. Having long eyelashes, I got tired of them always hitting my lenses, but Rudy's allow me to place the lenses far enough away to not have an issue. I have one set up for riding aero, high on my face, and another for running set lower. Based on your needs, a photo chromatic would be awesome, and they even have them in different tones. I have both the red and clear. The red adds a bit of contrast and seems great when at night. Check them out, and I think they still offer a USAT discount.

Thanks for all the info.
I did have Rudy's in the past and I remember them being rather heavy. Have they changed and are not so now?
Anyone have any experience with the persimmon color??
Looking at the red iridium as suggested too.

I have prescription Oakleys, and like the gray lens for most rides, and yellow for low light. I've tried persimmon and it's kinda muddy middle (too dark for low light, and too light for sunny days).

I've avoided the iridium coatings since I treat my glasses roughly. The lenses are super durable (not a scratch after years of use), buy the iridium coatings scratch/flake more easily.

Oakley lenses are expensive, but they are the best I've used. As an added bonus, they are much less prone to shattering or popping out of the frames in a crash than a lot of other brands (Oakley specifically tests for this).

You're very welcome. I think Rudy's are really light now, as they are every bit as light as the Oakleys and Smith and Bolles I've had, but much more crisp, and durable. I know they have recently introduced a new lens type that is incredibly flexible and tough. I have not checked out the persimmon, but have clears, mirrored blue, mired red, photochromatic red and clear, and a few others. I think the clarity of their lenses are the best on the market, and since I'm a pro photographer, I am VERY picky.

After many years of trying different colors, I've found "driving lens" color is by far the best. It enhances contrast and soothes your eyes from getting tired. They're obviously made for viewing the road, and that's where you are looking, just on a bike instead of in a car. Other colors can seem neat at first, but end up just being a novelty. I'd get polarized, light-reactive, driving lens color if available.
