Storing multiple bikes
I have a small garage and several bikes. I am looking for a simple solution. I have four, soon to be five adult bikes and two kids bikes. Rather than sell off a bike to store the new one, I would like to figure out a good way to condense the bike mess. What are you using that works?
I am currently hanging three and then backing the others in between to fill the gaps. This is not the best.

I need to be able to get to the bikes to use any one of them at any time. Ease of access is important so that my wife can get them out too.

Thanks,

Hang them from the ceiling?

My wife and kids' bikes (4) are on the floor so they can get to them without any troubles. My bikes (5) are either hanging from the ceiling, on the work stand or in my office on the trainer. Seems to be working.

I've started using clug for my storage:

I'm not sure it'll solve your specific space issue but it's a cheap, neat product that's working well for me.

This looks nice, do you have any pictures of them installed?

Sure, here's one I took a while back - can take some more if you like.

Heard about it from DCR, fairly in depth article here: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/...ke-mount-system.html

My next house which I move into in 4 weeks has 10' high ceilings so I will be going with this most likely. I could come up with something of my own design but I also have to think about my wife or kids trying to get the bikes down when I am not there so this seems to be the best option. I have 9 bikes right now so I need as much storage as possible I do not want anything on the walls or floors in the new garage.

This looks very chic - but one could make the exact same device for about $30 of 2x4 from the lumber store--- :-)

hang them all on the wall. stagger the heights so you can space them closer without the pedals and bars interfering with the adjacent bikes.

I fit 5 bikes on my garage wall in about a 6 foot width, I think. I'd have to measure it to be certain how wide.

^This is what I did in our small apartment. You can fit a lot of bikes in a small space. My bikes went on the higher positions, my wife's went on the lower position. Works really well.

Yup, that's how I do it too.

to the OP, you'll need a couple of lengths of 1x4 or 1x6 board to screw to the wall at the studs, and the tire hooks then attach to the 1x4's or 1x6's. That lets you put the hooks wherever you want.

I think this is what I will do. I have been thinking about it but I wanted to get some input before getting started.

Thanks.

It'll probably cost you $15-$20 if you have to buy all the materials. Do you have room in your budget for that?

Took this junk pit corner of my yard behind a shed and made a dedicated bike shed capable of holding 7 bikes and extra wheels. "69"ing the bikes is the best way to get a few extra bikes in an area (if hanging like this).

I keep two bikes in the bike cage at work (track and hardtail mtb)
My touring bike and wife's bike live in the living room
Kids bikes live on the balcony
And my triathlon bike lives in the bedroom

Some of these storage locations give me a serious case of garage envy.

(Pro tip: when you get your first tri bike and are still enamored with the sleek lines; when you walk into your room and say "hello gorgeous" to the bike, make sure your wife is not in the bathroom... or if she is when she replies "awwww" DO NOT respond "Oh hi, I didn't know you were in here")

I do the same thing as them, just slower

This was going to be my suggestion... hang vertically, staggering front to back. Especially like this if you're also up against a wall; or, if you have open access from both sides (my garage has a beam running across transverse so they get hung in the middle on the side without the car), they can be staggered slightly so that they're all hanging by the front wheel which makes it easier to grab by the bars), but the odd spaces face the door while the even spaces face the back.

There is *always room for a bike in the bedroom.

Seriously, I keep the tri bike in my studio apartment by the bed, and the 'city' bike under cover outdoors on the balcony.
