Tragic story, thanks for sending, the more people know about shallow water blackout the better. The deaths are absolutely preventable.

The situation when spearfishing has a slightly different than in pools, but most of the mechanism is the same.

Very sad, as kids diving for lobster, we were taught to never hyperventilate. We often did it in the pool, though, trying to swim multiple laps underwater.

Can happen to anyone.

Wow. I had this happen in HS to a friend who did survive and never have done the masters swim hypoxic sets since. Scary stuff, and completely preventable.

Had a close call at my local pool a few weeks ago. Good eye and fast action by the lifeguards saved his life.

Hello rhayden and All,

During a swim meet (a very long time ago) with a team we frequently competed against ..... from a neighboring city .... one of their divers would swim laps underwater during the warmups. We were usually amazed at how long he could stay under.

In those days we all hyper ventilated to stay under longer.

Someone noticed him in the deep end moving slightly (probably from water turbulence) but not making forward progress.

He was quickly fished out and given the old fashioned artificial respiration .... and after a lot of coughing he fully recovered.

He did not di(v)e that day.

Close call.

.

Cheers, Neal
