Interesting stuff, especially with all of the supposed endorsements...

Anyone have any inside info on this?

What would you like to know?

We've used it, I'm not at liberty to speak too much, but can probably handle some simpler questions.

Just general curiosity-- how do you calibrate it? What is "wearable" (i.e., HRM type strap, insole?)

Thanks!

It is accelerometry based, not force. So data is entered into the algorithm. Not so much "force" to calibrate.

When we worked with them earlier, it was mounted on the shoe. That they updated to the hip. I believe the article mentions both.

I'm a huge fan of Strava's Grade Adjusted Pace (GAP). This helps show me how even my effort is running up or down hills. This formula breaks down when descending steep hills, but I would love to be able to have GAP as a field displayed on my GPS watch.

Being able to track pace vs elevation in real time doesn't seem that hard and would give me all the "power" data I need for running.

I was wondering if anyone had anymore experience with Stryd? Reviews/Impressions?

Hmmm, interesting...

According to their blog, Kona is going to be their big "Public Launch", they've got a booth at the expo offering public demos and will be serving up data from some of the pros using it during the race:

Their Twitter feed says that they started shipping units to Kickstarter backers earlier in the month and "will announce our online pre-order store soon". Sounds like they're ready for the big-time! I'd be interested to hear any first-hand experiences too.

I missed out on the Kickstarter, but a few of our coaches have them. Might try and snag one for the race if I can and just clip it to my race belt. My watch won't read power in running mode, but I can use it in "cycling" mode and it should work ok. The Magellan I have has really crappy pace smoothing, so I mostly just use 1/2 or 1 mile split times, overall distance, HR and cadence info.

I just had my first run with mine a couple days ago. I think it'll take some time to see how useful the data is, but at least it's more comfortable then my previous HR strap.

One issue I had was running up a sand dune. Since the sand cushioned each stride (or stryd) the power didn't go up, but it was definitely more effort. Everywhere else seemed to track as I expected.

I don't see how this is any different than the accel in the new Garmin HR strap.

I have one listed for sale in the classifieds. I had two and have one left.

I've been using mine for about 3 weeks now.

I have 3 from the coaching package. Initial thoughts (from using it myself. Have got athletes using the others but not enough feedback yet):
  • On flat treadmill and outdoors the power resembles effort pretty well
  • Power for inclines/declines (I believe) uses an altimeter so if you jack up the incline on a treadmill it's not going to represent the power you're putting out
  • Power numbers are higher in running versus cycling (not surprising really). At IM distance I would be doing ~3.5w/kg on the bike versus 5.5-6w/kg running
  • Built in cadence is useful
  • The device is built into a heart rate monitor
  • Power model is basically derived from accelerometers and altimeter data. So if there is a variable exogenous to that model it will not be captured in the power data. A couple examples:

    • Running on sand (as the device does not have any way to know what surface you're running on)
    • Running on incline (as the device does not have any way to know the incline you're running on. It infers this from altimeter info when outdoors)
    • Walking (I guess the device/model isn't sensitive enough to pick up the movement)
  • So far the use cases I think may be well served by the device:

    • Pacing on hilly/unfamiliar courses to make it flat effort
    • Providing an independent variable to heart rate (e.g. to understand environmental factors such as heat and it's impact on RPE and heart rate)

So far it seems like a good device. It's well built, seems sturdy and does what it says it will do. I haven't tested it in water yet (to see if it'll survive a swim or if I'd have to put it on in transition) If the pricing is comparable to the price on kickstartr I think it may become pretty popular. It replaces the footpod and HRM I had at a similar cost to what I paid for them (although for people with newer devices the footpod is already redundant I guess).

If anyone in NYC wants to run with one shoot me a message. I want to do an experiment in Central Park with a number of people

Can you use the strap for the bike too? How would you use it in multi sport mode? Does it interfere with my power meter?

I think right now it depends on the watch/head unit that you are using. Garmin has not (as far as I know yet) added power as an option for running (Suunto has). So, to run with power using Garmin, one needs to run in bike mode. That would mean that the paired power meter would be the Stryd instead of your bike power meter. You'd either need a separate bike head unit, or reconfigure power after you bike. Perhaps this could be done fairly quickly by having 2 bike profiles (where one is for running) with the different power meters paired (if that is even possible). In any event, it would be to Stryd's benefit to get Garmin on board with accommodating running power.
