When Jack tweets about you the answer is usually....

Wait, I don't know what the answer is.

I think even a 2:59:59 and 1:29:59 goal is a stretch if you are a 2:53-2:55 runner.

No, nobody will run their optimum marathon run after running a half the day before. Some people may run closer to their optimum, but nobody is running as fast as they could.

Thanks again everyone. This is fun. I ran my 2:56 two weeks ago, so I'm not going to attempt a "test" run just yet. I'm just trying to keep up my volume for now.

6:45 is my current marathon pace only because that's what I ran on 12/6. I do feel that I sabotaged my chance for a 2:53-2:55 that day by trying to run a 2:50.

I'm always up for a good challenge. So, unless something breaks in the next 3 weeks, it's 6:45's for 39 miles or bust.

Sweet!!

I say that not because I think this is a great idea, but it is exactly what I would try to do. You may just save mecfrom the experience.

Good luck

You can definitely do it! Don't let anybody tell you otherwise. People run marathon courses backwards for fun before the race starts. The human body and mind are capable of amazing things. Isn't that why we do endurance sports in the first place to see what we can do?

Some motivation:

American Men Masters 50 km road record: Jeff Wall 3:00:00 (5:48 per mile)

American Men Masters 50mi road record: Bernd Heinrich 5:10:13 (6:12 per mile)

American Men Masters 100km mi road record: Bernd Heinrich 6:38:21 (6:25 per mile)

American Men Masters 100mi road record: Mike Morton 13:11:40 (7:55 per mile)

Can't wait to hear how you do!

You guys are in my head now. Tonight's easy run turned into an MP run. I needed to prove it to myself. I'm not running 26 tomorrow.

By the way, the only charity slot left when I joined my company's fundraising group was the Goofy. I would have gladly signed up for the simple marathon if I could.

It depends on your current training load what kind of impact a 13mile marathon pace run will have on you. For example, if your Lionel Sanders and running 90mpw, it will be a LOT less than if your a normal amateur training 40-50mpw. Sanders could probably jog a 1:09 in the 1/2 then follow it up by cruising a 2:25-30 the next day. But that's jus a WAG. I don;t know what his open time is. It's hard to predict with triathletes. Some of them are not great open runners, they just don't slow down much off the bike.

The half marathon is in at 1:24:49. That was about 4 minutes faster than I was supposed to run. I latched on to a group at mile 3 and just went with the flow. I've got a feeling that tomorrow is going to be a long day.

1. Run the half on Saturday as fast as you can.

2. Try to run the first half of the marathon on Sunday at the same pace.

3. Add your times from Saturday and the 1st half of Sunday and call it your marathon time.

4. Consider how you feel during the 2nd half of Sunday's race as penance for trying to cheat this way. ;)

If you take multiple naps, massages, foam roll yourself multiple hours, and eat/drink right, and all other conditions being right - then maybe. Since you're used to high mileage currently it seems it may be do-able. Take an ibuprofen on Sunday morning too if you really want to trash your legs!

Love to tri!

Mission accomplished!

I'm at the airport now, heading home after a long weekend with multiple 2 am wake-up calls (5:30am race starts). After yesterday's "inadvertant race", I went into this morning thinking things were going to be tough out there. After yesterday's run, I also knew that running the tangents is impossible on this course (my Garmin said that I ran 26.5 miles today). So, I went out at about 6:40 pace planning to hold it until the wheels came off.

Well, the wheels never came off. I ended up running a 2:56:14 for a 6:43/ mi pace, with the second half being only 11 seconds slower than the first half.

Thanks for all the comments. They really made me want to hit my splits out there.
