I have been in this sport for a long time. Been saying this post statement long before America Mult-Sport. Sadly; just saying that makes you look.....?

None of that matters one way or the other. There are far more important things to worry about.

It is fun to banter with the masses though.

Just say you have done a Half-Ironman and be done with it. Be honest.

Just rename your race known as the "Toughman Indiana Half" to the "Half-Toughman Indiana" and be done with it. Be honest.

It is all about the marketing...... Ironman 70.3 just sounds better than "Half-Ironman" just for the same reasons you probably decided to not call your race the "Half-Toughman."

It's not about the distance, it's about what you put into your training and races. I take a lot of pride just in my training and the races are the icing on the cake.

When 85% of this country is interested in getting fit but have no idea where to start...even the illusion of the 140.6 distance doesn't help them or our sport.

Look; we live in a city with a 34 year Half tradition that did NOTHING for the masses. We are 38/50 in state fitness and 87/92 counties in Indiana...dead last in the top 250 large cities in America in 2003/04.

All the volunteers from the community left after race day and told everyone...no way they would every attempt a Half...let alone a Full. I think the highest total local finishers might be 70 of 110,000 in 1995...

Not good.

Don't think you are old school...
Cos most folks who have been at this a long time couldn't care less
what other people may or not may have said about an event they took part in..

Triathlon, regardless of the distance, is not going to solve your state's fitness problem. It is a niche sport and market. If you want to appeal to the masses, organize a color run or obstacle race. Such types of events have very few barriers for one to enter, allowing participants to literally get off their couch to enter. This is where a big chunk of the potential new triathlon market share has gone. To attribute loss of triathlon participants to confusion over the term "Ironman" is just silly.

By almost everyone? Don't forget that full IM requires a very substantial financial investment (entry fee/equipment/travel and lodging costs) as well as a major time commitment that precludes most people from even dreaming about it.

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment

I'm speaking only about the physical aspect and the perception of the event. If you tell a co-worker that you did an IM they are going to be more impressed by your apparent physical and mental strength and they won't have any idea about the finances you may have required.

Bingo. We have a winner.
We are talking about long distance triathlon NOT making a negative impact on the general population
By just stating-ironman- we/triathletes - are telling the potential ready to be fit average person..140.6!
It totally turns them off our sport.
The is the exact comment from hundreds of volunteers an friends over 20 plus years of asking that exact question.

Btw. We have produced hundreds of special events and sporting leagues, tournament as well as raced over 400 times in tri and run.
