Slow down there. He was arrested and charged with DUI, not convicted. He'll probably plead this one out like the one before. But, you never know, Ray Rice knocked his lady out cold on video and had his charges dropped.

If this was a Woods' like infraction I could make a joke about switching from black lines to blurred lines.

everyone should care....not because he is Michael Phelps, but because he was drunk, excessively speeding and crossing into the lane of oncoming traffic.

This isn't a case of poor decisions made in his private life.....he could have easily killed or seriously injured someone.

Good point. If he is convicted he will not be able to go to Canada or Mexico and might be restricted to going to Europe. There is a way out and that is getting a visa for the country you want to go to, but you need alot of documentation.

......yes like millions of other idiots out there. should we be writing threads for each of those idiots as well?

point is that people put these athletes/celebrities up on a pedestal and then take issue when the fall. they are human like us and all humans are flawed in some way or another.

he wins olympic gold medals and I don't drink and drive, so who is the better person? but society doesnt value my contribution to the tune of 40M$.

so again, who cares about michael 'i'm a retard who drinks and drives but can swim really fast' phelps?

To me it boils down to scale. Michael is known on a world scale. You are not. The discussion for his actions too are on a global scale. If you were busted for a DUI likely there would be talk in your community.. i.e. friends, family, coworkers, acquaintances.... you get the idea. Phelps has accepted contracts from large sponsors, those make his spotlight even bigger. People see sponsored athletes and celebs as role models (right or wrong it's the way it is.) Your spotlight is small which is why when you fuck up there isn't a thread in this forum about it. But if your coach drops you mid season you have a chance at fame and 15 minutes in the spotlight if you so choose.

Agree. Very fortunate he didn't kill or injure anyone.

His attorneys will probably workout a probation/community service/addiction treatment deal. Seriously doubt he serves any jail time.

The interesting part will be how USA Swimming handles it. Can't imagine they would impose any suspension or penalty that would carry through the Olympics.

The biggest damage done is to his reputation and future endorsement earning power.

I specifically said that you shouldn't care because it is Michael Phelps. As noted above, it is about scale. We don't write threads about those idiots because it is not relevant to this board. But within the scope of those people's lives / influence? Yeah, I care....mostly because I don't want to end up dead on the side of the road because someone is too stoopid to realize they shouldn't be driving. As one of the most vulnerable people out there (cyclist), you should absolutely care.

YMMV.

funny thing is that I tell my wife all the time that I will likely either die of cancer, genetics, or get hit by a drunk driver.

Very little I can do to control either unless I live in a bubble.

i guess my perspective is that I don't really idolize athletes, celebrities, etc for what they are but rather for what they accomplish and accept that we are all flawed humans that make mistakes so why magnify their mistakes......puts more pressure on them, which I would say, leads to more drinking!!!!

carry on STer's!!! you don't get different results doing the same thing.

From TMZ:

Michael Phelps had just finished up an 8-hour gambling session at a Baltimore casino before he was popped for DUI early Tuesday morning ...TMZ Sports has learned.

According to our casino sources, Phelps hit up the Horseshoe Casino around 5pm Monday afternoon ... and sat in a private VIP gambling room for hours ... finally leaving around 1am.

We're told Phelps was playing blackjack ... though it's unclear if he also played other card games that night. There have been several reports that he's big into poker.

Clearly, Phelps had been drinking inside the casino ... we're told his booze of choice was beer ... and when he was pulled over around 1:40am, it was just a few miles from the casino.

We're told Phelps is a regular at the casino ... in fact, he was just there last month playing poker.

Phelps made a huge mistake this time. This is his second DUI and he was clocked at 84mph in a 45mph speed zone. That is reckless and incredibly dangerous. As much as I like him, they need to throw the book at him this time. He is going to kill someone, if he does not start being more accountable for his actions. It's super disappointing that he ended up getting another DUI, but at this point he has to pay the price. It's not fair to the general public to have him driving around recklessly and intoxicated.

USA Swimming has suspended Phelps for 6 months, including his funding, and also barred him from the Worlds next year.

Pretty stiff sentence.....good for USA Swimming.

I'm not up on the whole qualifying process for Rio, but have to assume that missing next years worlds are not helping? As i recall we have our own trials so he should be good to go for them. But missing that many big international meets is really going to hurt him i believe. You could see in his comeback that each meet he was inching closer to his former self, and was just barley making relays. Now he will have to go to the next level all on his own with no one to push his buttons. I can see Lohcte and a couple others salivating at that 100 fly on the medley relay.

Well he has two choices now, fold his tent, take his millions, and make poker his new obsession. Or he lights a fire under himself and does stuff that he never thought he could, just so his legacy does not end in shambles, where it is right at this moment. He said it was all about the fun in this comeback, now we will see if it was also about ego as well.

You mean like red bull and any alcohol?

This was/is an issue. Cops said people who drank too much used to pass out. Now, they just stay awake and make things for themselves and others way worse.

As long as he swims a trials cut in the qualifying period, stays in the drug test pool, and makes top 2 / FINA A standard he is good to race in Rio. Making the team is not the issue. His events are far more globally competative. Missing Kazan will hurt him experiance wise IMO
