Power cycling / rowing
All,

Power rowing compared to cycling is an interest of mine.

Please, anyone who has Concept2 time for 2,000m or 5,000m and a cycling 20 min power, or estimated FTP or a 25 mile TT average power, post, email or PM me the numbers along with your height, weight and age.

I can translate rowing times to watts if you have a rowing time but don't know the wattage.

Any additional info would be welcome, such as years cycling compared to rowing.

When I have enough data I plan to write an article about it.

Obviously any individual data will be kept confidential as I can understand many may not wish to divulge their true power online.

Many thanks

Richard

Thanks, 131 watts compared to 161 watts.

How experienced cycling v rowing are you?

I rowed at university last year from October to June, about 3 water sessions and 2 ergs per week. 60 miles per week of commuting cycling (not fast) during that time. Then I have only been running since then and both tests were done recently.

I don't row enough but I like it so this has me curious now.

I did an FTP test on december 13th last year (virtual in trainer road) I was 212lbs (6'1) according to my notes and did 242 in a 20 min test.

We have a C2 in our UK office and I found out they were doing a competition so i went to the gym to see where I stood, hadn't been on a C2 in about 2 years. Did a 5k in 18:33. I got injured shortly after and had to stop rowing otherwise I think I could have gone sub 18 once a little practiced.

( I was in the lead with that time and may have finally been beat recently I forget)

So 254 watts compared to 242 watts ( estimated power)

I would suggest the 242watts is an underestimation. You really can't rely on power numbers which have not come from real power meters.
But then you are a big man, how well trained are you cycling?

2K erg: 6:35 (age 38 at 5000 feet altitude), 6:15 (age 23, sea level)
20min power: 368w, age 38, 5000 feet altitude
Started rowing at age 18 (1994) and was consistent with it for 6-7 years, haven't pulled on an oar/erg much in the last 13-14 years.
Started cycling in 2003, been consistent with it ever since.
165-168lbs for all testing performances

Yeah wish I had a real powermeter at the time to see where I truly was and believe it was underestimated a little. In May I think I was 276 (at about 205lbs) on a 20 minute test using a power2max coming off an achilles injury and with a meniscus problem so honestly I don't even really know where I am. I need to get back to rowing and do another FTP test to start my winter training. I'll try to post both up to get a better comparison for you.

2013 was my first semi serious year since the late 90s (raced mtb/swam in HS), had a short come back in 2010 but then house and work got in the way. I did row as part of strength training during that 2010-12 window just never rode once.

Sorry if I'm being thick here but is the 20 minute power of 368 watts your cycling power?

Edit. Yes obviously as the 2k time is 364watts, I must be tired after my run.

I would guess with those rowing times you are tall?

2K erg: 6:38-6:40 @ 85kg (I hit this range a couple times at ages from 19-24)
20 min bike: 360W @ 80kg (age 26)

I was never a rower, but I took a few intro-to-rowing classes so I knew the basics of technique and always liked the concept 2 in the gym. I also owned one at home for a couple years and put quite a few km onto it.

355 watts for 2k compared to 360 watts for 20 min. Height?

I'm in.

I need to get a current power test on the bike and then I'll send the numbers...

Are you still interested if there is a long time gap (ie years) between the 2 tests?

Yes, this seems to be often the case where people have times and powers set many years apart.

Obviously I'm most interested in power set by people who do an equal amount of rowing and cycling but these people are rare so I'm grateful for any data.

There is evidence that people only lose 3% power per decade if they continue to train on an erg, somImcan make some assumptions.

I'm not doing a scientific study so I'm not going to be too fussy about the quality of the data at this stage.

The more data the better.

Thanks
