John van Wisse

Aussies will know the name...(former?) Aussie record holder for the channel, 3 times a winner of Manhattan island swim,
a 4th place at IMNZ a few years back and now Arch to Arc record holder...Something more for insane people, but anyone
who knows John will agree he's an awesome lad.

Insane!

My wife and I did one session with Johnny van Wisse (he's just too far from our side of town). He introduced us to just about everyone in the building. His enthusiasm was infectious. Great guy.

Can it actually be called a "race" if only 14 people in the world have ever completed it? A better word would be 'bad-ass-o-meter', which would have his name as the top setting.

I think it's as much a race as any ironman with 2500 entrants, where people draft, cut courses, don't do the swim because it's a bit choppy (there are some cool pictures of john in the channel ... It was a tad choppy ;) ) etc. A race against oneself at the very least.

So, like some 50 people or so lined up, someone yelled go (because using a starter's pistol is too expensive), 4 of them dropped out due to inadequate salt intake, 5 forgot their gels and bonked, 3 didn't know the course, 20 formed a peloton (but the ever- present motorcycle marshals let it slide), and 61 hours later this bloke finished and got his headsweats cap (no medal though, since they ran out and will mail it later) to memorialize the accomplishment?

Sounds like most triathlons. He actually got a medal. A small one.

Pretty badass, only thing i have problem with is the world record designation. But if he gets a world record, then i suppose i have the WR for this, so maybe it is ok:

My only problem was that, for once, he swam in a wetsuit. Knowing John, I thought that was a bit weak ;-)
Of course it may have to do with being a fair bit leaner than when crossing the channel as 'just' a swimmer.
A couple of years ago he attempted a triple crossing and wussed out after the out and back because it was
cold and there was current and he was tired and some other crap excuse like that ;-)
I hope he reads this.
