LBS love
So I have dealt with some shitty luck recently with my bike and gear, and I haven't seen a thread on here in a while for some local shop love, so here are some places that I think deserve some recognition. While it is easy to spend our hard earned money at various online retailers, these shops have gone above and beyond . If you are in the Bay Area, hit up these places:
Beyond Aero in Berkeley
Cycle Sports in Oakland
Sports Basement with a bunch of locations throughout the bay area.

Shout out to Coates Cyclery in Pomona, Ca.

Best LBS in SoCal! They've been in business since 1934! In fact, i'm about to go by a 2015 Giant Defy from them in ... 5 minutes. :)

A good LBS relationship is the best investment you can make. I even used the location of my LBS when deciding where to live. If the potential apartment was too far to walk a broken bike to them (Village Cycle in Old Town, Chicago), I didn't even consider it.

I grew up in Chino in the 60's and Coates was the Schwinn dealer. My brother still goes there.

I am lucky my town has a few decent shops, and 2 that are really good service wise. It is a 2 way street of course, be good to them and they will be good to you.

Kristin at Velohut is compiling a list of local bike shops that might be helpful: http://www.velohut.com/...ocal-bike-shops.html

No, I'm not affiliated with that site in any way...I just think she's creating a great database worth checking out.

THIS. THIS. THIS. Richie, Max, and Lucas (and Sam and Sean) are some of the coolest guys on earth. And amazing to deal with when it comes to bicycles.

This.
I considered Davis Wheel Works to be my LBS when I lived in the Bay Area..... Worth the drive from SF. And I STILL considered them my LBS, even though I now live on the other side of the country. Case in point: Sherpa recently spent 30 minutes on the phone with me, stepping me through some bike maintenance. It would be worth the time & expense to fly in there from anywhere in the country to get a bike fit from Joe. The crew at DWW is the best.

My LBS is my garage, but my favorite local shop is A Road Bike 4 U in Irvine. Then again, I have yet to have a bad experience with shops in SoCal...just bad employees who I wonder why the shop keeps employeed. It's sad when your customers know more about bikes and wrenching then you do...then again there are CEOs who don't even know what their companies do...:(

Tyler from Two Seasons Cycle and Ski in Hanover Park, IL (western Chicago burbs) has been awesome in getting all of my bikes race ready for the past three years. He goes way out of his way to find all possible solutions. The shop is very friendly, and not as pretentious as others.

Also a thanks to Bushwhacker in Peoria, IL. I was doing an Xterra race and had some mechanical issues the night before the race on a practice ride. Race was paid for, already had a hotel, and it looked like the race was over for me. They got me up and running just before they closed and also provided me all sorts of insight on the course for the next day. If you are in and around Central IL, be sure to check out their shop.

A couple of NorCal places we can refer clients to without hesitation - Andres at Beyond Aero in Berkeley and Kevin Buchholz at Echelon in Santa Rosa. We've known Andres for a couple of years now, and are glad to welcome his new shop to the Bay Area. Both are great guys and solid knowledge. Good luck with Andres' last name though.

I still have much love for Joe Santos and the guys at Davis Wheel Works but I have FINALLY found his equivalent on the East Coast:
Jonathan Blyer
Acme Bicycle Co
In Brooklyn. Absolutely top notch. The type of service that saves one's race. Go to him to build your new dream bike.

My favourite shop is my basement where I can do just about anything.

But for a few instances where I haven't been able to take care of something (broken drive side spoke night before a race, and accidentally crushed rear shifter cable with bike rack on morning of son's first day of mountain bike camp) I would recommend:

Bay Cycle in Pickering. They're awesome. They don't upsell, they just do what needs to be done. Super friendly, awesome guys. Both times I've gone in they've fixed me up while I waited despite being busy. I've sent a couple of friends there, and they bought mountain bikes from them and now they recommend them too.
