I Think DeSoto Got There First …….
Hello All,

http://www.nytimes.com/...es&nlid=45162987

Like Patagonia just discovered it ..............

“A new kind of bio-rubber could change the way surf companies make wetsuits.”

I think DeSoto got there first …….

https://www.desotosport.com/...s/wetsuits/index.php

“All T1 Wetsuits are made of GreenGoma™, a limestone rubber...bye-bye petroleum wetsuits!”

and you have got to love the name …. GreenGoma™

(disclaimer …. I have a DeSoto T1)

Cheers,

Neal

Given it's the NYTimes, if this doesn't work out, they will write another article blaming Bush for it.

Patagonia has been using limestone-based neoprene in its wetsuits since they started making them in 2005/2006.

The material in the article is a new, plant-based material that Patagonia claims is more environmentally friendly than petroleum or limestone based neoprene.

Here's an article on limestone-based wetsuits that Patagonia produced a couple of years ago:

https://www.patagonia.com/...e_from_limestone.pdf

I'm not sure that I buy what Patagonia is selling, but they are not simply marketing limestone wetsuits under a different name.

Well, it's not like he signed the law that banned incandescent light bulbs… oh yeah, he did.

To be fair they did say "the way surf companies make wetsuits". DeSoto makes triathlon wetsuits and they are different :)

Xcel,Rip Curl and O'neill were using limestone neoprene way before Pattagucci trumpeted the "green" neoprene or produced their first wetsuit. The extraction process is nasty for the enviroment so you didn't hear much about it. Patt. new angle is plant based neoprenes. Xcel uses the heat produced during extraction to help with aquaculture in Asia to try and offset the process, haven't heard anything from Rip Curl. O'neill has been producing a wetsuit called the RG8 out of leftover and recycled materials. Most of the high end neoprene from Yamamoto is limestone based.
