Two immediate thoughts:

1. I would think the round tube mounting tubes would negate some of the aero benefit.
2. Fairings aren't legal for most triathlons, right?

I thought about making an aerodynamic fender which would do basically the same thing
but might skirt the no fairing rule since it'd be a fender not a fairing.

That would be a whole lot of fun with any type of crosswind.

I don't know of very many road (pure) cyclists who would strap
one of those things on their $6,000 bike.

Along those lines, I was wondering if one could make a bayonet-style front fork that instead of splitting above the tire and going down, it would go forward, forming a fender-like structure protecting the front top half of the tire, and then come straight back to the hub, parallel to the ground. In a sense, it would be a "soft ride" fork. It would also look goofy as hell, be heavy, and probably fragile. I'm sure it has been tried before.

Agreed. The headline says "Penetrate Headwinds" but fails to acknowledge the "Absorb Crosswinds" part. It even looks like they've curtailed the trailing edge in order to (possibly) avoid interference with the spokes under deflection.

I think not:

Just imagine the rpm (and friction) of those bearings at 30mph bike speed ...

Ya... the black hole in your wallet and where all you power due to the friction on those bearings ends up.

Of course no mind that the drop to the pads is a whopping 2" and the super slack seat tube angle.. Ahhh... the early days of "aero".

It's butt ugly and crude, but I looked at their data anyway. If these guys really are engineers, I think they should be ashamed of how this is presented. Use a real PM and do some calculations... don't rely on PE for gawd's sake!

BTW, I just applied for a patent on frame and fork stiffeners that kinda look like fairings, but aren't... so that racers too can enjoy a dramatic 10% increase in speed.

Yes, any added faired piece is supposed to be illegal. I have wondered if an aero cover from chainstay to seat stay that slightly covered the rear wheel would be beneficial to TT bikes. I figure that with the disc would be a significant savings. Of course it would have to be a part of the bike itself and not an add on.

I really think this is a scam kickstarter. I mean, do you really need $120,000 to produce these? Glad to see people are not falling for this.

They need to avoid the F-word. Deflector shield, brake track protector? Maybe make a little slot to carry a couple of glue-less patches so that it becomes a "provision carrier."

I've thought about the same thing but in reverse with the first part of the fork following the down tube and then extending forward to the front hub parallel to the ground. The interface between the wheel, fork, and down tube always struck me as being aerodynamically messy. This would clean it up a bit. Bonus points if you could integrate some suspension into it.

like so? that's going to have some suspension as-is.

I wonder how much the potential benefit goes away with deep section wheels, or a disc?

Pretty much exactly like that... perhaps a little more space between the wheel and the fork/down tube and lose the fairing extending forward of the hub up top.

Sweet bike!
