Vintage marathon cheating story - help me out
Quote | Reply
I remember an old story about a [German] female runner posing as a medical researcher in the run up to a marathon and recruiting an elite male for "testing." He ran the race wearing a small box which, it was discovered later, contained only her timing chip. His time was good enough to qualify her for the Olympics.

Does anyone else remember this or the names involved?

Found this after a couple Google Searches:

Kerstin Metzler-Mennenga from Lichtenstein has admitted that she cheated to get selected for the WC this year. She gave her timing chip to a male German runner in the Hamburg marathon in April this year, asking him to wear it for a scientific study. As a result his time of 2:52:14 was credited to her. This got her selected for Osaka.

She admitted what she had done after the Berlin marathon this year where she also got someone to wear her timing chip so should could get Olympic qualification. She also said that she pulled the same trick at the Frankfurt marathon.
