Not a loser, just not the person I want my students to model their choices after. In my opinion that is part of my defintion of a champion, but on and off their respective field of play.

But again, I state just my opinion. There is no correct or incorrect answer.

Phelps admitted he screwed up and did something stupid, then refocused his live, overcame his bad choices, and won a bunch of medals this year.

Personally, knowing that most kids screw up in one way or another, I think Phelps is a pretty damn good role model at the end of the day.

Anyone born in the 80s knows that Bo Jackson is the greatest athlete ever. Taking this idea into account, Lance was great at two distinct sports - triathlon and cycling. Phelps was only great at one.

Phelps is 27 years old. LA is 40. Phelps does have a charitable foundation (that he donated 1 million $$ to). Give him 13 years and see where he is. Yes he has a DUI but that was 'ages' ago. Again, look at where he is in 13 years and compare to where LA is now (and probably even in 13 years).

Maybe I am emphasizing the wrong traits/values he shows. But when all the kids constantly remind you of how he is a "stoner" or make jokes about him having the "munchies" during subway commercials, it leaves a somewhat sour taste. I just have other individuals that I think are better ROLE MODELS that I would push my student/athletes to model their choices after. However, the OP did ask which is the better champion so I guess I am off base regardless on this thread ha.

Yes - anyone who ever smoked pot, is PURE EVIL.

No matter what else they may have achieved in life.

He's a great example of how stoners can accomplish great things. I think you may be taking your kids too seriously. Kids are prone to kid around about almost anything. Smoking weed is about the most harmless thing a person can do, IMO.

Plus the OP did ask who's the greater athlete, not role model. I'm a swimmer first and tri-guy second but what Lance did was pretty impressive, even if he did dope. So I'm going to call it even. They're both incredible athletes.

Haha you seem to be taking great offense to my comments, is there a specific reason why your "hammer" is green?

I just don't like to put an athlete who has done drugs on pedestal. I teach very impressionable age bracket of kids who struggle everyday with peer pressure. I dont think smoking weed is the devil.

I dont walk around with a shirt that has a big X through his face. There are just other athletes that I think are better role models and champions is all

I thought "stoners" were peaceful & easy going, didnt mean to crash your "highs" haha. Proceed to be offended

I agree that for the most part they are kidding, but I try and set a good example and not jump in on the smoking weed jokes with them.

Alcohol and caffeine are my drugs of choice.

They happen to arbitrarily be legal. Yay me!
Likewise, pot happens to be illegal. In some places.
So - Phelps can be a role (not ROLL) model only in places where his actions are/were arbitrarily legal?

Enjoy your role model, Cali, CO, and Amsterdam.

PS - I'd honestly prefer that cigarettes were illegal, and pot was legal. I find smokers to be annoying, smelly, and unrepentant litterers.
Pot smokers are just mostly mellow.

Yep, except that the pot smokers can stink up the place too. How old are your kids? :))

I put Gretzky and Phelps as the 2 greatest athletes in history.

At least give some consideration for rower Steven Redgrave ... " the only Olympian to have won gold medals at five different Olympic Games in an endurance sport"

Continuing on from wikipedia:

Quote:
Redgrave stands 1.95 metres (6 ft 5 inches) tall. In his prime, he weighed more than 100 kilograms (16 st; 220 lb). His primary strength was in sweep oared rowing, where he has the distinction of being one of the few oarsmen to have won Olympic Gold rowing both bowside and strokeside (starboard and port). He also enjoyed success in indoor rowing, winning the World Championship for Indoor Rowing in 1991.[9] He was also a successful single sculler winning the Wingfield Sculls five times between 1985 and 1989, but not quite a world champion class single sculler.
From 1991 onwards, Redgrave, and the crews in which he rowed, became renowned for their consistent dominance. They set themselves apart from many other internationally successful crews by winning almost every time they raced. Indeed, the very occasional lapses in this winning run, such as the Lucerne regatta in 2000, were regarded with surprise by both the rowing community and the press.
For much of his career, Redgrave battled against severe illnesses. In 1992, he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (although he had continued to train for a considerable time prior to diagnosis). In September 1997, Diabetes mellitus type 1 was added to his list of ailments. Through careful management, however, he was able to continue training right up to the Sydney Olympics.[10]
In addition to his Olympic medals, Redgrave won 9 gold medals, 2 silvers, and a bronze at the Rowing World Championships. His 14 total Olympic and World Championship gold medals is unsurpassed by any other rower in history, although later equalled by his long-time rowing partner Matthew Pinsent.

And to add to that - Jordan is a perfect roll model. He is everything we need in a current hero. I can not recall a single scandal. He is very pro-education. Lance is a douche bag by all accounts. Phelps is just a flash in the pan for all practical purposes. Jordan I would have to say is the best guy in 20 years in sport.

What about the 2 year suspension for gambling during which time he "played" baseball???

Well, at least that was my theory for his sudden departure and return ........ no need to sully his name as he was THE cash cow for the league, so the NBA did everything on the down low.

I was born in 1991... After watching about an hour of YouTube highlights, I'm going with Bo. Fastest 40 yard dash ever, plus I've never seen anyone run along the outfield fence like some damn martial arts movie stunt.

Jordan was an incredible player, but probably just as much of a douche as Lance - have you seen his Hall of Fame speech? Phelps smoked some pot.. so what. It sure as hell isn't performance enhancing...

Going off of who has been mentioned:

Bo
Gretzky (this is like 1B)
Phelps
Jordan
Lance
