I had Biopace rings in the early 90s but didn't car for them. Is there a diffrence between those and the new Osymetric rings?

They are kind of designed for exactly opposite purposes. The biopace was to 'smooth' out the stroke, the newer elliptical rings are to maximize the power stroke.

Though, take the results with a grain of salt. They simply modeled the entire "system" with a computer program. Kind of difficult. But the paper describes the different designs of the rings.

Thanks. Just need a new chain ring and I'm contemplating everything.

Try the rotor rings. Their 'milder' design might work for you. They shift far better than the full elliptical rings. But the rotor rings real advantage is the ability to adjust the angle of the chainring, this is absolutely critical to be able optimize different body positions, frame geometries, and cassette sizes (yup, cassette sizes make a big difference). Their disadvantage is that their installation instructions on how to consider these factors are bad to non-existent. (fyi, no connection of any kind between myself and the company)

Get some old Biopace and rotate them two positions anticlockwise on the crank spider, bingo, instant Osymetrics.

Sweet! I truly hated those things for 2 months. So did everyone I knew. I guess the jury will be out for a while. I'm sticking with a new DA.

Biopace aren't nearly as extreme of shape as the Osymetrics are, but granted, the results may be the same.

I use them on my 3 speed fixed gear (s3x hub) . Might not work well
9 or 10 speed with no pins or ramps . Plus the chain may get stuck between chainrings .

Get the burger it's cheeper and tasty.

The first-gen Biopace are pretty ovaloid, Biopace II less so, I've owned both.

The first climb on my Ovalised Biopace 42inner ring felt very very weird. I don't notice it as much in the big ring. I have no idea if it makes a power difference.

On this topic one of the French TdF team managers was interviewed in L'equipe, talking about wiggo's dominance. He asserted that a large part of it was down to the oval chainrings, which he asserted gave a 10% power increase. Apparently he'd tested them in the 80's

I'm aware of the claims, and I have a set, along with Q-rings that I'm going to test to try and determine a difference.

In which case anyone not using them would be daft cubed. I'm guessing this might be Fred Grappe? Of the admittedly few published articles of his I've read, I haven't found one that wouldn't be worth physically trying to drive a coach and horses through.

Iīve had a look for the article online without success.

I think it was from an interview with the Confidis manager, heīs tested the oval rings pre-UCI ban - with Renault Elf - in their wind tunnel or something.

Sorry I canīt dig it out, maybe it was just in the print edition.

Seriously? Non round chainring with a fixed gear? Do you mean single speed and not fixed gear? I can not imagine it working. David K
