I've easily gone over 10000 miles on a pair that had more to go but sold them with that bike. I have over 6000 on a pair of 404 Firecrests currently. This is going to depend on such a varied number of variables though that there can't be a point that a rider should expect to get to. Combinations of rim type, spoke type and count, hub type, and rider weight and style not to mention type of terrain ridden on all will play into wheel longevity.

So you ride on your Firecrest 404s for training as well? How do they hold up to everyday use Potholes etc?
Yes, I ride them as my everyday wheels. Have had no problems with them since getting them in January. They have been reviewed all over the place and several reviews tout them as being durable enough for everyday and I got the same endorsement from Zipp reps. I look at it from the point of view that I will never get return on my investment letting them sit until race day. The more miles I put on them the better I feel about my investment.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I've got a new set of FC404s in June and while I don't plan on riding on them every day, I find that switching out the break pads and moreso changing the break gap/width on my specialized transition when I switch them with my training wheels to be quite a pain. I also enjoy know that I'll have a lighter/more aero wheel on race day as a special treat.

I may consider putting them on for my first race and take them off after my last, so perhaps a June - August wheel set. Need to think about that.

I put 40-50,000 on a set of Rolf Vector pros. They were pretty much the only wheel set I had for about 7 years. I never trued them once. The rear hub finally cracked, but I can't bring myself to throw them out.

100k+ miles on the bike since 2001 primarily on 4 different powertap setups (have 3 PTs now, an old one converted to fixed gear, one for the road bike, older one for the TT bike).

If you ride 9000 mi/yr, how much do you swim and run??? Also, how many times to the ER due to crashes??? That's a lot of miles on the road.
