Not sensible for triathletes. Maybe OK for a couch potato.
Question: How should I structure my run program?

If you are planning on training for endurance sports (and being that you are in ST forum I will assume the answer is yes), then Atkins is not the route to go. You won't have the energy for lack of carbs in that type of high protein diet and your training will suffer. Much better off simply calculating a good calorie deficit for calories burned vs. calories consumed in order to gradually lose weight while training. Using simple diet calculator apps on your phone can work wonders for tracking calorie differentials. Search Calorie Counter on Android or iPhone and you will find some great apps.

Agreed. I read his book, and this is what I came away with. I later lost significant weight by going on the "eat less food / everything in moderation" diet. I've come to believe that if your diet has a name, it's not a good diet. It should be about creating better habits and then living them.

you know.. people say its calories in and calories out... and that should make sense... but for me it doesn't
I just finished up my Ironman build.. and I maintained weight or even gained 2-3 pounds
my diet consisted of mostly grains with limited fruits and veggies (I know.. I know)
Now after scaling back my training and getting back on my paleo diet.. I will shed weight like crazy (up to 10 pounds) in a month
Yes.. it might be mostly water weight... but my body is leaner and lighter and easier to run

No, it's just not "healthy" IMO, & another version would be the Paleo Diet for Athletes.
Check this out:
http://home.trainingpeaks.com/...s-not-a-calorie.aspx
ps...and a good calorie counter does wonders. Most people don't know how many extra calories they take in.

Magic doesn't exist in the world. Thermodynamics rules. It certainly is calories in/calories out. You are simply taking in less calories on your "paleo" diet without realizing it.
Aside from weightloss, the bigger question you want to assess is whether you are getting enough protein and vitamins while on a calorie restriction.

yeah.. you're right..
I just re-read my post and agree with you... I must have had a lapse at work..
Good call
paleo diet is resulting in less calories
I will say though that eating grains makes me feel bloated and heavier and in the sport of triathlon... mentallity can be just as powerful..
So.. by cutting the grains.. I do feel very light which often results in faster times for me.

+1 Paleo Diet for Athletes is a good, helps outline a good diet with incorporating sports nutrition.
Above all other diets/books, I recommend looking at Bob Seebohar's Metabolic Efficiency Training (fuel4mance.com).
You can work your way to eating close to an "Atkins" type diet, but it takes time for your body to adjust, and "Atkins" is good for weight loss but it's not very balanced. Best done (IMO) before or during base training.

Pretty much what everone has said. There is no magic "diet" to lose weight.
Your body will eventually establish an equilibrium and you will not notice any losses after that point. So in the case of the Atkins diet, they have you completely stay away from simple carbohydrates. This is sound advise to a point as basically carbohydrates are mostly water. So, when you negate carbohydrates from your diet you lose exactly that, water weight. Eventually your body realizes what you are doing and will compensate. Ideally you want to cycle your carbohydrate intake. To keep it simple: cut out most of your simple carbohydrates (i.e. potatoes, white breads, pastas...etc..) for 2 weeks, then have one day where you introduce those carbohydrates back into your system. Then you begin the cycle again....and so on. Obviously if you are training more, you will need to fuel yourself before, during and after a workout. Also, focus on eating complete sources of protein (i.e. meat, eggs, cheese, quinoa, hemp,....etc).
What kind of weight loss are you talking? I assume body fat? How much are you training? How much sleep do you usually get? To really understand what you are looking for, more information is needed.
disclaimer: I don't claim to be a professional at this, but I am a certified personal trainer and I have also completed a certification in nutrition from ISSA. I have also helped several of my clients successfully lose body fat and gain lean muscle.

I had no issues exercising when I was doing Atkins. I lost weight and didn't have any energy issues. Now when I was on a low fat, low calorie diet (1800 Calories / day) I had major issues with energy and started getting horizontal ridges on my finger nails.
I wouldn't worry too much about doing the Atkins diet, just don't forget that fat has calories. It's really easy to look at a sugar free pumpkin cheesecake that has 30 carbs in the whole thing and forget that it's still a bazillion calories. I think it's sensible if you take a sensible approach to it, but that's probably true of most diets. Remember that Atkins is more than just eat lots of meat and fat.

Interesting TP article. I think point #2 is pretty valid and perhaps a reason some athletes have a hard time shedding weight. Our bodies are very good at adapting and become more efficient?
One interesting thing I have noticed, and I don't have a reason for it: when I run a lot, I drop weight easily but cycling and swimming don't have the same effect even though I am supposedly burning the same amount of calories?

I am much leaner now with less than 20 miles per week of running than when I was in full on IM training. It is all calories. I dont use the large volume of aerobic exercise as an excuse to eat junk any more. Gordo liked to say that if you are doing more than 6 hours per week of exercise and you are not at your ideal weight, you are guilty of using exercise to compensate for a bad diet. I like to say it more simply, You cannout out exercise a bad diet.

Boy do I agree. At 6'5", and getting down to my current race weight of 160, it is not easy to stay at this weight. I have to watch what, and how much I each, every day. I get on the scale each night. When I start to eat a bunch of junk food, guess what, the weight goes up!! So, very easy, I hit 158, I get to pig out. I hit 161, the cookies and ice cream go away. I know there are exceptions, but I have yet to see a person that is heavy not eat lots of quantity and poor quality food.

If vanity is your only goal, then yes, go Atkins (or go Diet Coke and cigarettes). If feeling great, performing well and optimizing your health through food is your goal, then I would follow a diet that is vegetable heavy (especially raw ones), avocados, some nuts and seeds, some fruit, limited processed grains and lean protein. Atkins will quickly give you "beach muscles", but that is it.

Sure glad I do not need to be on a diet, I HATE vegetables!!
Give me meat and potatoes.

Nah, not me.
There is nothing magic about becoming fat. When is the last time you see a bunch of fat folks from a 3rd world country? The difference, they do not get as much, or as much junk food to eat. Give most of them
the same quantity of junk food a fat person eats, and guess what, they get fat.
So many make so much money thinking they have the "magic" diet. Since most of the data shows most fat folks that take it off put it back, the issue is all the simple stuff. Do they eat a breakfast? Do they sleep enough
hours? Do they stay away from the junk food and drinks? No simple magic.
This video from Dr. Oz is all one needs to understand, and do. I do all 7 of these which might be why I am so skinny.

Please don't let common sense hold you back. Lay your vast modern knowledge of weight loss supremacy upon us. As I said in my original post (the part you so conveniently omitted), "Eat smart. Exercise smarter. Weight will be lost." That's the formula.
So, what's your magical formula? Eat junk food + don't exercise = weight loss? Eat in a dark closet after midnight + exercise only on odd days = weight loss?

The math is more or less correct. The issue is that some types of calories produce much more satiety, and therefore people spontaneously eat less. Protein and fiber are most associated with satiety. That is why Atkins was producing more weight loss. Studies that controlled for protein intake found no difference between Atkins and a low fat diet. Insulin is NOT the culprit, excess calories are. The question is, "how do I get fewer calories?" The most reasonable answer is to avoid low satiety, calorie dense foods (mostly junk food) and drink no calories (except for skim or lowfat milk). Success with Paleo diets probably has a lot to do with the high satiety index of "Paleo" foods. There is something to be said for the meat and vegetable diet.

If you're interested in the Atkins diet, I'd check out this site
http://eatingacademy.com/
by Dr. Peter Attia and read the book "Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It" or "Good Calorie, Bad Calorie" by Gary Taubes. Give it a try for yourself and see how you perform on it.
I'm one that does not believe in Calories In = Calories Out, it does not work for me. I've weighed, measured and logged EVERYTHING thats gone past me lips and every minute working out to have a 500 to 1000 calorie daily deficiet for months and did not shed an ounce. I always felt blotted and huge especially when eating grains. When I started cutting back on carbs while increasing the fat and protein levels, I started to drop some real weight. Much more then just water weight, it is fat. The key for me is getting enough sodium in me before a workout and its explained in Taubes' books.
Calories in = calories out may work well for all you Ectomorphs out there but not for everyone.
