Thanks for the feedback blackduckracing....we appreciate the conversation. Hopefully I answered some of your same questions/concerns in my last reply. I also think it's important to highlight some of the ways we are trying to make the program have real value for our members--people like you who are avid participants in the activities they love (tri or otherwise). Just for reference, here are some stats from the first half of this year to show how Advantage members have saved:
- Members have saved on more than 180,000 event registrations
- We've given away more than 2,000 free event entries
- Members have saved on over 30,000 gear purchases
- Members have started more than 12,000 free training plans to help prepare for events
We are excited about how much members have saved already this year, but we are
always
looking to add more value for them.

Off topic, but still pertaining to Active.com....
How about you guys instill some sort of data populating software, so that when a person registers for a race, the email titles are not so generic as "Payment Receipt" and "Registration Confirmation"? Would be SO NICE to have the name of the race you registered for in the email title, along the lines of "Registration Confirmation--Awesome Triathlon." That way, someone who registers for multiple events a year, esp some far in advance, can actually go back and find the pertinent registrations in their inbox/saved email when needed.
Thanks!

Thanks for the info and for tackling the issue via SlowTwitch. It's nice to know certain people/companies/organizations within the endurance sport community pay attention to the ideas and emotions (albeit anonymous) voiced on SlowTwitch.

I've signed up for a couple M-DOT races on Active recently. It is opt-in, and it actually comes after you've finished registering for your race. It however isn't incredibly clear that you're done and can just close the window. There really should be a message that says in big letters "Congratulations your registration for Ironman Lake Placid is complete, here's some other stuff you may want to buy". The page says all of that already, but it doesn't say it entirely clearly for someone who is rapidly try to fill out every box they can and hit submit.

I have succesfully gotten my money back from some of these magazine subscriptions that every race used to come with for free and then all of a sudden they would just start charging you. All it took was a few phone calls.

I think that part about "not really clear to someone who is rapidly filling out forms" along with that page being presented before the event confirmation page is the key to the confusion. Some races sell out quit rapidly, and the first race is filling out the forms to get in. So it would be very easy to misunderstand something, assume it is still part of the signup process, and fill it out, if that page is presented before the confirmation screen is presented.

Of course, you could just make the actual online sign-up process simpler, easier and faster! :)

Since some RD's are chiming in here....
racing has become expensive....it would be great if active can offer tier rated program...
I dont care for a cheesy t shirt (I donate this to charity), finisher medal (paper weights), or cheap hydrogenated bagels (kill stray dogs) as post race breakfast.... leave this as an option for those first timers walking the race, but I do not want the cost on me since Im running it to obtain a podium medal.
I remember the days rate of a running race was 4$ per km, now it is getting 10$ for some.

As someone who just took advantage of 20% off a schwaggle deal that saved me at least $50 and the same day won a free entry to a $200 race before the end of my trial period, I will continue to sign up for active advantage.
Now, if you could just do something so I could delete the 10 old addresses I have in active.

+1 to that. I registered some friends for a race once, years ago, and they still show up, along with my old addresses. I can't figure out how to remove them.
Also, I'm with Dan, and maybe I too am wrong, but I think I remember several un-check boxes too.
Also, I've been stuck with that AA charge in the past, and was surprised to see it on my credit card, but after I called them, they did reverse the charge.

I remember they used to be uncheck (same with those stupid magazine subscriptions) but now you have to check the box to get those, so they probably changed it at some point.
I even called and talked to active to have them straighten out my addresses, it worked for a week, then came back. I wish I could save my CC info there too. I know I'm probably one of the few who doesn't 'care' about the risk, but that's why I chose my bank, if anything happens it's no hassle to get it fixed.

I am not 100% sure if I had to check or ucheck a box, but I also noticed an Active Advantage charge on my credit card statement a year or so ago. I called and they removed it, but if I had not caught it, I would have certainly wasted the $59 because I had no idea that I signed up for it.
I buy plenty of stuff online and I don't recall anything like this every happening with other "retailers".
I am sure that somebody at Active feels that "this program is a value add to our very important customers." I'd be curious to find out what % of Active Advantage customers cancel the service withing 90 days. And of those that don't cancel, how many of them actually use any of the services provided.
I think Active.com is overall pretty great. I think that for the majority of races that they support, they do a pretty good job for participants and for RDs. For the races that sell out in under 30 minutes, they have struggled a little bit. But this is probably less than 5% of the races that they are involved with.
For the casual person that signs up for a local Turkey Trot, Mud Run, 5k - they probably LOVE active.
But for the person that signs up for 10-30 races per year (every year), Active needs to find a way to improve service (ie- reduced costs, reduced # of "check boxes", some sort of loyalty program that doesn't cost $60 per year).

LIke I said, I am happy with the active advantage because I do save more than the $60 every year. Basically you don't pay active fees for most races, the big ticket races you still do. I wish it were no active fees for all races (including IMs) then it would definitely be worth the $$.

This is your problem here, and the Active rep already said proudly that the offer comes after registration is complete but BEFORE the confirmation page. Obviously, those should be flipped, but then people would know they were done and would disregard the offer. So, yes, the confusion could be cleared up, but then fewer people who look at and consider their offer. And, if you are Active, better to have confusion.

Can somebody that is signing up for a race in the next few days take a bunch of screen shots of the entire process?
How many total screens from start to finish?
How many total check boxes from start to finish? How many are already checked by default?
I did notice this past year that Active did start include USAT license stuff on their forms. In years past, I could handle that at packet pick up (which I preferred).

The fact is that Active - more often than not you get what you pay for. The services they offer to RD's, timing companies and sponsors is hard to put a value on. It does not even need a list because some of the shits on this site that will buy a $6000 bike (but not hire a swim coach) - will go out and bitch about a registration fee (while drinking a $6.00 imported beer).
Active of all of the companies I used made my life very easy......
BUT (and there is always a butt)....When I had 19 Wetsuits as a sponsor of my race - and at Registration Active.com was trying to get my participants to purchase a wetsuit from another vendor - I was pissed. Or, they want you to rent wheels (none of that goes to the RD)....and all the other shit they try to sell that is contradictory to the sponsorship agreements of the event at hand....that is just unfair to the RD's and the sponsors (or an LBS that wont sell wheels if you rent them). None of those third party sales go to anyone but Active....hell, most large shops and companies like Hammer have "commission" programs even anyone sends them business.

My wife and I just got dinged today for a $59.95 Active Advantage membership we didn't asked for. I assume that it happen when we registered for Mont Tremblant 70.3 in August. I am usually very careful when filling up this type of forms and I really don't remember seeing any check box/radio button for subscribing for this membership. It pissed me off so much that I actually went to register for a random Ironman just to see where's this option is, but I could not find it before having to enter my credit card info.
I've just read ACTIVEADV's post, which explains it why I could not find the option before entering my CC info:
"
To accept the trial offer you must verify and re-enter your email address and then click an acceptance button (OPT-IN). If you accept the trial you will receive a confirmation email and a series of emails during your trial period.
The 30-day free trial offer is presented on a screen
after
your event registration is already complete, just before your event registration confirmation screen. At that point you are already registered for your activity and no matter what you choose to do on the offer screen (try the program or not try the program), you will next see the event confirmation.
"
This makes it sound like I've intentionally signed up for this membership, which I definitely I did not, especially that I don't even live in USA.
I am now really curious where the option to subscribe for this membership is, so if anyone could take a screenshot and post it here next time they register for an event I'd appreciate it.

If you were really paying as close attention as you say I think you would remember declining the option to sigh up for the program. You likely clicked a "OK" button instead of a "No Thanks" hyperlink to opt out of the program. They will refund your money for asking.

Obviously this has been said before but the charges are completely outrageous. Why should the cost be based on the cost of the event- because we "can afford it" ?Bullshit. For some of us we're registering more than one person on a regular basis and the costs are out of hand. I signed my wife and I up for the tucson Half mary and was hit with $15.00+ from active. In the same hour i signed my kiddo and myself up for a sprint tri in Phoenix- again a $15.00 active charge. However in this case I had the option to mail in my registration, which I took advantage of. $30.00 in fees for two events- come on!!!
