Zipp 404 non-carbon clincher - Broke today
Quote | Reply
Here are 2 pics of the same condition. Looks like metal failure at hub. Put about 2500-3000 miles on the wheels. Is this normal wear and tear, or is it worth my time pursuing a warranty claim? Not looking for legal advice, just any past similar experiences with zipps.

Thanks.

It looks like the newer 188 hub, which shouldnt fail like this. I dont think youd be out of line looking into a warranty replacement if possible. Id check it out and see where it takes you. Best of luck.

It's probably because your cassette is too dirty.

the cassette is only dirty because the OP shat himself when the hub exploded

I have seen that before, can you take a picture of the spokes in question right inboard of the cogset? I am curious if they are eaten away by a chain dropping off the cogset from a maladjusted rear der. - not saying that is the case. You can rest assured that Zipp is going to want to see the condition of the spokes.

I have seen some "JRA" failures of just about every hub there is - especially with radial high tension spokes. I am more than certain that Zipp will take care of you no matter what the determined cause of the failure is.

I think this is what you're asking for.

Here's another angle showing part of the hub still intact for comparison. Apart from the obvious grime, there seems to be no visible deterioration suggestive of metal on metal friction. Thanks.

Nope - I want to see from the cogset - if there is damage on the faces of the spokes, that is a tale to tell. And, the reason for the failure.

What I am really asking is if there is any damage to the spokes from a dropped chain.

The hub failed because it's highly stressed and only supported on one side.Welcome to the world of light weight parts that fail.

Not even tension on the Zipp - however, it is not like an old school low tension wheel where the non-drive only holds things in dish. That being said, you are probably right - what Zipp is going to look for is an ancillary reason for the failure, such as a dropped chain catching the spokes and tearing them out. In any case, the repair is a warranty hub and rebuild - $200 tops.

In any case, the wheel that I posted, that wheel has a TON of miles on it and with a properly lubricated chain. Notice how clean the cogs are....

With your wheel. Give Zipp a call in the AM, let them know your situation. If they are not willing to warranty it (even at a cost) you can install just about any hub (that fits bladed spokes) and have it rebuilt. Worst case scenario figure $150 for a hub, $50 for spokes and $50 for the build. Best case, Zipp will rebuild it for you (and I bet that is what is going to happen).

i'm sure it has nothing to do with how filthy your cogset is but if that could be a reason...

joking aside, a clean bike is a happy bike. also, i seem to recall reading here (by one of those wattage nerds who calculates EVERYTHING) that a filthy drivetrain requires 3% more energy to maintain the same velocity as a clean drivetrain.

regarding a wheel rebuild, they're fine now but ZIPP wasn't always known for making superior hubsets. get a quality hub like a chris king and rebuild it to better than what it was

Here's a similar incident with Zipp but looks like different design/failure but same place?

One of the benefits of cleaning a bike is the opportunity to visually inspect for damage, wear etc.

Can you remove the cassette and show us the "inside" view?

Now that you've taken pictures of it as it is (dirty), I suggest you clean it and remove the cogset and take pictures of it clean. Contact Zipp and discuss with them the possibility of a warranty replacement. You could get lucky because Zipp might just be curious and would like to examine the hub for reasons of the failure.

That is awesome - and sort of what I figured the boys would do. There is a reason we pay more for Zipp - Customer Service. Something all our Chinese wheel riding friends will just never get.
