Xterra folks, question about Maui

So i finally got my new super MTB and have done a couple xterra type races. I had a fleeting thought that i might want to go and do Maui, i did the very 1st race there back in the early 90's. A couple questions, first how do you get into the race? I looked at the website and it is not clear at all how you qualify. I see the general entries are closed, but i just cannot see what the process is to enter as a qualified racer. I see there are regional races and a national championship for the US, but it appears that the nationals are too late for this year? How many points does one need to get to Maui??
Secondly, i hear the course has changed from the old original course that i did way back when. I remember it as being very brutal and technical on the bike. Has the course change made it any easier? How bad are the climbs, and do slugs like me have to get off and walk them? Is it also a mass start for all AG'ers? Thanks for any help, i also called them but have not gotten any response, so figured someone here knows the skinny.

You have to win a spot at a regional championship (# of slots depends on AG but generally podium = Maui) or nationals. No number of points will get you invited to Maui. To get to nationals you have to be in the top of your AG in your region (again, # of slots depends on AG but the big ones it's 8). Points are accumulated at races through the season. Standings are here:

There is also an at-large registration early in the year but those spots go pretty quick.
The course changed recently and it looks much easier than it used to be.

Thanks for that, so it looks like right now i will slot in at 7th in my AG in the west region with only one race of points it appears. Does that get me into anything that could get me to maui this year??

I just looked at the page with the number of slots per AG to qualify for Utah. It says there is 18 for M25-29? That right? That seems ridiculously high?

Monty,
I am not sure what AG you are in, but most XTERRA men's AG take 10+ from each region, so I would say you will qualify for Utah. At Utah you can qualify for Maui by finishing in a qualifying position (my AG is top 3, but I am not sure how that works for the AGs). You can also get a roll down there if those slots are not taken. They don't handle the slots like IM as you get an email a few days after the event with your code to enter or deny the Worlds slot.
I hope you get there!
Cheers,
Jack

Thanks, right now I'm 7th in the 55+ AG in the west, when do they shut off the points and invite you? Also looks like this years nationals get you to maui next year, and not this year, so i could be out of luck getting this year??
And i do not show up in the west ranking at the moment, not sure if it is because i just got the points, or i need some other qualifying thing i do not know about?

I think you are 8th in the West at the moment. They shut off points at the end of Aug for the USA Champs in Utah. At Utah, you can (I did last year) qualify for the current year's World Champs. Even if you don't qualify, you won't want to miss racing in Utah...it's a fantastic course with great climbing, descending and views to match.
Go here to read about qualifying for Maui (US residents):

It is high, but considering there are only a few regions, the total number of racers in Utah is less than 300. It is a true championship race with good, stiff competition...and a fun, top notch course.

Thanks Jack, it looks like i could hang on for a Utah invite, then have to get top 2 to qualify for maui. Everything i read though says the season ends on sept 1, and all races after go to the next year. If you got to chose the current year maui from last years nats, then that is good news if i can get my butt in shape. How is that Odgen course on the bike? Very technical, hilly, or more single track and dirt roads?? Also, what is the altitude there if you remember??
I'm really starting to dig this off road thing, but i'm still really bad on really hard courses. Some will come with time i guess, the other part i will have to get rid of my pink panties..

That season data cut off is for qualifying for Utah (the Worlds is distinctly different).
The course starts around 5200 feet (give or take) and climbs up to almost 7800 feet (if my memory serves me). The course starts off on a loose and rocky fire road, then get's on some very nice single track. It is a climbers course and the descending is fast and not overly technical. The run course is super tough with some real technical sections and some hurtful climbing. I would go there 3-5 days before the race to get in 2-3 rides on the course. If you do that, you will be able to ride it with confidence as it's not a scary course, only one that can catch you out. Do go there as light as you can be, as it's a real benefit on those climbs!
The views from the top of the bike course are spectacular and overall, it's a fantastic place to race.
