Thinking of teaching in Asia and need input! Quote | Reply

As a 40-something Civil Servant who is bored to tears with her job and life in general (except for the triathlon part!), I've decided it's time to make a change and to get good and creative about it. I live in Canada and am thinking of looking into teaching overseas - probably in Asia.

Has anyone done this recently? How does one go about hooking up with a reputable school or agency? I have a Master of Arts degree but no teaching training...does that really matter? There are tons of links on the internet but where to start...

If teaching doesn't work out, that's okay, I'd just like to work overseas for a couple of years and have a bit of an adventure!

Look up IronWolf on here. I think he is currently doing that right now. He may get an email if you send him a PM. Let him know you're a female, he might respond more quickly. :)

Good luck. It could make for a great adventure.

I am in Thailand and considered teaching here last year. I still might but want to check out China before making a decision.

In my view the best way is to go to the major city in the country you want to work (ie. Bangkok, Shanghai etc.) and then enrol in a TOEFL course. I found one in Bangkok and they guarantee a job placement if you take their 6 week course.

In most places all you need is a University degree to teach but most want the Teaching English prep course. No actual teaching experience is required. The reason I suggest taking the course in the country you want to work is that they will gear the teaching towards areas the local students have trouble. In Thailand they will focus on the pronunciation that is difficult for Thai students for example.

I don't have the name of the school I contacted but it was in Bangkok and they offered the 6-week course (recommended). I would read up on the internet on the requirements, do a search for Teaching English in Thailand and you will find schools offering courses.

I have no problem taking the courses to get the necessary certification, although living for 6 weeks without any income is a bit daunting. But then again, I've never let a lack of money impede my tri lifestyle! lol Thanks for the input, it's appreciated!
